I've joined the wrecked Z club... [not as severe]

My coworker and I were heading out for lunch. We decided to take my Z since it was pretty nice out.

I was driving northbound on the left lane of a 40 MPH street. After an intersection to my right is a gas station. As I approached the gas station I saw a car pull out from the gas station to turn into the southbound lane. It was a bit close for comfort, so I started slowing down. The SUV behind that car quickly followed suit and darted out of the gas station as I was approaching 3-4 car lengths away. What I did not anticipate was the SUV stopping dead on its tracks and blocking my lane. My coworker and I quickly and verbally responded as I held down the brakes and the horn, but it was too late.

Thankfully, I was was well under 40 MPH at the moment of impact. The SUV suffered minor damage to the door and rear fender. My car fared worse: bumper, hood, head light, and fender. The tire impacted the door and the rim was about 1-2" away from the impact. The driver tried to move her vehicle, and quickly stopped when it started dragging my car.

My coworker quickly called 911 while I stepped out to quickly take some snapshots before speaking with the driver and her occupants. Every one was okay. She was very apologetic, and I told her that it was okay and that it's easier to replace parts than lives. They were pretty sad looking at the condition of my car and commenting how it was nice and asked a few questions about it.

State troopers and an officer arrived to take down information, photos, and later handcuffed the driver for reasons unknown.

It seems like the accident attracted quite a bit of attention. A stranger from the gas station ran out asking if we were okay. A passerby yelled out the window asking if we needed duct tape to hold the bumper. He stopped to help us with a couple of strips.

Right now I'm pretty stressed. I finally stopped shaking, but am still in shock. The car was towed to the body shop. I already contacted the other party's insurance and got in touch with an agent. Hopefully she can get in touch with the driver. I'll find out what to do next on Tuesday.

trent1331 03-19-2011 12:10 AM

Ouch man, sorry to see that. Be sure she gets fixed 100%

I actually totaled my first car (97' Mitsu. 3000gt) in a similar type of wreck.. Never know why people just happen to pull out in front of ya. :(

Red__Zed 03-19-2011 12:12 AM

Ouch. Glad to hear your ok, hope everything gets taken care of.

DIGItonium 03-19-2011 12:15 AM

Definitely... I'm not sure about the headlight situation. The driver side is fine. If I get one replaced, I might as well replace both and go back to stock momentarily. Else it'll look like a patched eye.

 DIGI!!!! NO!!! It looks like the exact opposite of what I just did! Are your headlights MRWorks modified or did you do them yourself? Thankfully you're ok. :tiphat:

I am... my heart hurts. :crying: Thank goodness I didn't install the INGS +1 lip.

I've never been involved in an accident before. Hopefully I don't run into complications with the insurance. My gf says after the estimates are done that I get a check?

@2theextreme, they were from CiNcity. I'm debating about a couple of sponsors here about some custom work that won't break the bank. It will be Version 2.0 of the current design, but I will choose my own parts. Since my headlights were modded, I was thinking about ordering a modded set ahead of time and bring it to the body shop.

Ouch glad ur ok wat is ir with idiots raising zs

Depending on what insurance company you have, this is possibly true. For me, the check was made out to both the body shop that I decided to take my car to and also myself. I had to go to the body shop this past Thursday to indorse the check so the body shop can deposit it and begin purchasing my parts.

Yep, March 4th.....had a seizure behind the wheel. Everyone is fine, nobody was in the car that I hit (it was already parked), and I will probably be losing my license for about 6 months.....normal law in Virginia....gotta be seizure free for at least 6 months after the last one.

fairladyZ34 03-19-2011 01:23 AM

Glad no one got hurt, including your rim!

DIGItonium 03-19-2011 01:28 AM

Yup... if the rim got hurt, it would truly suck. I'd rather deal with the headlights than the rims.

Marco's inbox is full. I've not contacted 180|Customs yet. The headlight design will be the same, but the components will be different. Gotta find someone who can do it since I'm not very crafty. I also need to find a good deal on a new set of headlights as well.

Sounds like MRWorks is about to get some pre-Spring business....haha!

fairladyZ34 03-19-2011 01:36 AM

goodthing it didnt look like this in the end

This thread makes me sad

DIGItonium 03-19-2011 01:42 AM

Dude, that made my stomach sink to the floor. So your car came out looking new after all the work was done?

Despite the nature of the accident, I'm grateful for reacting fast enough to slow down the car and keep it straight to minimize the severity of the accident. I can only imagine the damages at 40 MPH and the condition of the occupants. There were a couple of kids in the backseat, so I'm happy they did fine.

fairladyZ34 03-19-2011 01:45 AM

My insurance company declared it totaled. I miss that car but the G37 is nice too

COD4 03-19-2011 01:46 AM

:( .....

well looks like nothing happened to the frame.. or the volks!!! just the tire got the hit... hence.. new bumper, fender & hood.. new headlight and windshield fluid tank.. and will be like new.... I hope everything comes out fine.

wdkwang 03-19-2011 01:51 AM

women drivers man. get them off the road. caused a similar accident to the one i had in my previous car, my car was so low that it literally scooped up the SUV.
it was on a highway merging lane going at 50mph. i was in the right lane bout to exit soon. this woman decides to inch into the right lane and completely stopped. i'm like WTFFFFF!?!?!?!? slammed on the brakes but didn't make it.

either that pic was taken a bit after the accident or someone hit ur parked z, going by how your rotors collected some rust

fairladyZ34 03-19-2011 01:56 AM

^yeah it was a few days afterwards

houkouonchi 03-19-2011 02:00 AM

Wow this is kind of like this person that I saw a couple weeks ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyiHM30SStA

Also posted this in another thread. Probably would have been better if I just came to a stop but oh well.

I really don't get what posses someone to just stop blocking a lane like that. Luckily I also had another lane to go into.

I mean like WTF? there was no reason for them not to just go after that instead they just stop completely blocking my lane.

Then this other *** hat just goes into my lane through the left turn causing me to completely stop to avoid hitting him. Such BS.

jaedub 03-19-2011 02:07 AM

im glad youre okay......besides headaches and sores. But youre in one peace =) Good thing that the cooler or any pain in the a$$ components werent damaged

christian370z 03-19-2011 02:24 AM

That really stinks Digi, this definitely the type of thread that makes me cringe since this could happen to anyone. I hope you have the best of luck with the ensuing insurance and repair issues. :(

COD4 03-19-2011 02:25 AM

ok man.. first of all you are doing almost 60 mph in a city rd?? and also wasnt there a no left turn sign. LolZ... besides the point uhmmm accelerating like that next to soo many cars its like looking for an accident to happen, what if someone decides to change lanes.. BADABING!!!!.. honestly the person in the first suv was wrong by not waiting for you to pass but he/she prolly got scared; seeing that you were coming that fast they didnt know what to do. Now the second one.. the guy is just an ***.. thats how I got hit in my left quater panel.

I got up to about 55 yes because I accelerated to get farther in front of and insure I didn't cut the person off who was in the lane to the left of me. Before that I was doing about 40 and at the bare minimum the speedlimit on that stret was 35. I accelerated quickly but was not driving fast until that person pulled out (and stopped)

As for the no left turn sign.. It would have been obvious if I let the video start a bit earlier. I was coming off a freeway offramp. The No left turn sigh is for the other two lanes (they actually have these little cone things that will probably screw up peoples tires now) as the problem is people in the other two lanes turning left *in front* of the people who go strait coming from the freeway on ramp which basically ends at the light. That no left turn was *not* for my lane which is why it was so far over to the right.

If you pause the video right at the start in the bottom right you can see the little cone thingies I am talking about which they added as too many people were ignoring that no left turn sign.

EDIT: I will admit I should have just slowed down and stopped and waited for the idiot who stopped in the damn lane to move. Also I very rarely have situations where I accel and move between traffic like that. I have been driving for over 10 years and I have yet to have any type of collision with another vehicle.

The only accident I ever got in was in a subaru which was caused by crap on the road in a mountain-like area which I hit while turning which made me go off the side. Luckily it was the base so the drop wasn't life threatening.

aling lukring 03-19-2011 03:22 AM

Glad your okay!plus kudos to you for staying calm and keeping your composure. I got rear ended once while I was waiting at a traffic light when I heard tires screeching then bam! Right into me as soon as my car stopped I jumped out and ran to the other car and tried to open the door but was locked then I took of my shirt and wrapped it around my hand and was ready to hit the drivers window then I saw the ladys face in pure terror as I was about to hi the glass when I just realized what I was doing. Scary moment for me to just snap like that without thinking what I was about to do. Anyways I'm jus glad you were able to handle a situation like that in very controlled manner.

SophiaZ 03-19-2011 03:37 AM

Glad you're ok! A car can be replaced and/or fixed. It's very nice that you were polite to the driver too... I can't say I'd be the same. I got out and cursed at the deer that hit me in my past 350z. It got so scared, it ran off haha. But seriously, glad you are ok. Keep us posted on the updates

SoCalZ 03-19-2011 03:37 AM

:crying:
Sorry to hear this...glad you are all right...the reason i got my 40th is because 4 weeks ago my 350 was rendered totalled..i was only doing 20mph but do to the impact, the airbag went off...it was sad to see my 350 go but good things come out in the end...i got the 40th now.

ProfessorDave 03-19-2011 06:38 AM

Good quick reaction time. It's a shame that you always have to assume another driver is going to do something stupid. Hope the Z is fixed soon!

m4a1mustang 03-19-2011 06:46 AM

Ouch, man! Sorry to hear. Glad you're alright, though. Could have been worse I'm sure.

spearfish25 03-19-2011 07:05 AM

It'll be as good as new once it's repaired. Just use a good body shop that will go the extra distance and measure the frame. It looks like your front impact bar is bent and an impact to the tire can still damage suspension...get it evaluated. Otherwise it's just a headlight, fascia, and fender with miscellaneous interior parts. Did the airbags deploy? The sensor is in the middle of the front beam so I'm guessing they didn't...that saves about $6k in repairs.

Insurance companies give you two options: call the other guy's insurance and pursue the claim through them or get reimbursed by your insurance and then they go after the other guy. I've done it both ways and it ends the same. They WILL pay for your headlight and for the work Marco needs to do to make it the same as the one that was damaged.

I just want to know why she got cuffed...

kenchan 03-19-2011 07:08 AM

Ouch. :( sorry to hear.
