It's Not a Midlife Crisis
Geez, every time anyone see's my car, the first question I am asked is if I am having a midlife crisis. I am middle-aged but have had sportcars since 1979. I have had 5 Rx7s before the 370Z and have had a sportscar continuosly all those years so this is not a new course for me. I start to tell them a mid-life crisis means a man turns 40, buys a red Porsche, ditches his wife, and runs off with a 25 year old blonde with big boobs. I must confess the Porsche would interest me but after being married twice, you keep the blonde. I want the car. Since the Porsche is out of my pay grade, I'll take the Z. As I begin to explain this, I ask myself, why do people think that (the whole mid-life crisis thing) and why am I defending what is not true? I have come to the conclusion that they are actually projecting their desire or dream on others. Anyone else run into this?

Do you hang out with a bunch of honda owners?
|
I tell them I'm just warming up. They'll know when it really happens.

you kinda have to expect people to assume that you're having a mid-life crisis if you are 40+ with a 2 seater sports car. It's a stereotype... nothing you can do about it.
|
I get the same thing. I have owned and been driving sports cars (mostly Z's) -- almost exclusively -- since 1976. You turn 50, have a 370 and a trophy wife (which I do) and everyone thinks you are in midlife crisis. I think I had mine when I was 35 anyway when I realized that, like dogs, we all die someday.

I tell people I bought the Z after my mid-life crisis, and that all the wisdom I gained during it helped me make the decision!

Mid LIfe
Yep, its been told for me by my nutty menapausal live in friend. She always adds the 20 yr old woman into the conversations. I just say its an added benefit. Ticks her off. Im in great shape, a weightlifter all my life, no gray and have longer hair, financially set and own a black Z. Yeah, i guess shes right and i aint changing a thing.:driving:

People call it a mid-life crisis out of jealousy. The reality is that most people can only afford the noticeable 'toys' when they've reached mid-life. I mean, $hit...if I had a million bucks when I was 16, I'd have owned a Ferrari then.
|
I just tell them I had a crisis of running out of hookers and blow because they got tired of my old car... So I needed something sleek and new, and the 370 was just that. So I'm back in the H&B business again.

my z was a quarter life crisis

Being that I'm only 21 I haven't gotten the 'midlife crisis' line, but instead I got the 'are you trying to make up for something?' one. Thankfully this didn't come from a past partner of mine so it was easy to dismiss :)
|
hummm... i don't remember anyone saying anything negative about me having a Z.
they seemed to be excited. (im a pop of 2 with wife). |
Midlife crisis? Just because you don't have a giant Buick and are not in the millennial generation? I disagree, there is nothing wrong with owning a cool car when you aren't in your twenties...sigh..what is society coming to.:shakes head:
|
I said two things:
1) it's not a midlife crisis because I don't have a convertible, or 2) I'm getting a new 40 yr old (40th anniv) and getting rid of the other...my wife isn't so pleased with this one (I think more so b/c she's not quite 40 yet). LOL |

Re: Anyone else run into this? All the time. My answer, "Yeah, I've had a mid life crisis since I was 18 years old." (When I bought my 280Z). |
I get that mid life crisis crap too.I simply reply that I wanted a car that's almost as hot as my wife (of 27 years ).:stirthepot:
|
how old are you tho? do you fit the stereo-type? 79 was awhile ago.. lol but im only a youngster so dont pay any mind to me =)
|
Yeah my friends told me too I have midlife crisis after I bought my Z, then I told them, 'I will have midlife crisis when you see me drive a Toyota Camry."
|
Age is a state of mind. Anyone can have an existential crisis at any age. I bought my car because I wanted driving to be fun again.

Now that I'm immortal, when can I expect a mid-life crisis? What's half of infinity? Anyone? Bueller? |

Seriously, that is awful. |
I either started my midlife crisis early, or I'm not gonna be around long.
Don't worry about people that try to bring you down. Just enjoy your ride. |
I'm 45. Here's how I handle the Midlife Crisis topic, "It's my wife's car."

What crisis am I having? Like some said, it takes some of us years to earn the money to afford one but I've had a two seater continuously since 1979...and my 68 Barracuda....66 Sport Fury (440)...68 Charger (383)...and the convertible Valiant. Folks remember, the crisis is about hitting middle age and trying to hold on to what is gone. I could care less. Like I said, I'd take the Porchse or Z, you take the blonde.

It's kind of funny, I've had sportbike motorcycles for the past dozen years, and no one says much (TL1000, R6, Aprilia Mille). I buy the Z last year and it's a mid-life crisis. Go figure.
I thought I was actually slowing down by considering selling my Bikes and driving the Z more often. :driving: |
live life, love life, **** life...as long as your happy, let em blow you
|
I get that crap all the time too. I just tell 'em that driving my Z keeps me from having a mid-life crisis.

I remember when my Dad went to look at my car at the dealership. A guy was snapping pictures of it and asked "How much do they want for THIS one?" My Dad was sitting in it, and answered "It's not for sale, this one is my son's. It's just waiting for him to come pick it up." The guy asked "How much did that cost him?" (I guess fishing for the "I bought it for my son" line). My Dad's honest response was "I don't know, it's not my business." So... ...screw what others have to say and go enjoy your car! :tiphat: __________ As an aside, what do you guys consider "Middle age"? When I think middle-age, I think 35-45. |
