MPG on 370z??

might be a dumb question...
this is first time i bought a new car and owned manual.
So i just picked up 40th z yesterday and while i was driving back home(110 miles in highway) I set speed at 70mph and the trip computer gave me 21 mpg after 1 hr (I reset the mpg part while i was on highway).... will mpg improve as car breaks in more? (it only has 200 miles XD).

I tried search but couldnt find any

cfweber 02-24-2011 11:25 AM

sports car

The MPG estimates are on the sticker, but if you're worried about gas mileage

you may not be allowing yourself to fully enjoy your Z!

Live a little and use that pedal on the right.

of course ill use the long pedal on the right but on highway i was surprised...
i just wanted to confirm b/c i heard from somewhere that as car breaks-in mpg also goes up and wondering what others are seeing on highway cruz.

Mt Tam I am 02-24-2011 11:38 AM

Once I got past break in I was able to enjoy the right pedal. 12.7 mpg last tank. I enjoyed it clearly. When I get 17 mpg driving has been poor at best. I rarely see the freeway.

tsolin01 02-24-2011 11:53 AM

Highest I've had on a tank with all highway driving was around 24 mpg. Average without pushing it probably around 22 mpg. Lowest mpg I've had on a tank was 16.

ProfessorDave 02-24-2011 12:32 PM

Wow, I got around 26 mpgs the last highway trip I took. I was going 65 for part of it, 60 when the speed limit dropped. I was impressed.

I don't even look at the mpgs for around town driving. I don't want to spoil my fun. When I have looked, it's been in the mid to upper teens.

b1adesofcha0s 02-24-2011 12:39 PM

When I bought mine last month (used w/ 15k miles) the drive home was 150 miles of pretty much all highway. I reset the mpg thing right when I left. I was driving at like 70 mph the whole time and by the time I got home, it read 29.9 mpg. The reading is usually off by about 1 mpg though. I average like 21-23 mpg combined.

shadoquad 02-24-2011 12:42 PM

To answer the question in the first post, though, yes, gas mileage improves greatly after break-in.

Mine went from 16mpg to 21mpg.

alvinmathew88 02-24-2011 01:08 PM

Wind, elevation, outdoor temperature, road surface... too many variables..

DrEvil 02-24-2011 01:10 PM

with 6000 miles on the clock I get 25 on the highway and arround 17 in town.

fuct 02-24-2011 01:13 PM

16 in the city, 24 on the highway. much better than my 2003 IS300.

370Z JT 02-24-2011 01:19 PM

I get 15.

failingboy 02-24-2011 01:26 PM

Feel free to look at mpg from every tank of gas, starting when the car was new. It doesn't look like my average mileage increased at all with breakin.

Odd. I've seen several that did steeply increase after breakin. Did you break in as suggested in the owner's manual? No hard launches, nothing over 4000 rpm?

I should also add that my own experience is just based on what the car told me. I haven't been tracking beyond that.

In case the obsessive tracking of mileage isn't enough to tip you off, yes I stringently adhered to the proper breakin procedure documented in the manual. Granted, I never got terrible mileage in the first place.

Those numbers are all based on my calculations, although the car's reading has always been within 0.5mpg at the very most.

I was just curious as to why we have such disparate observed initial values. I drove my Z practically off the truck. Had 4 miles on it when I drove it home. During the first several weeks, driving it as suggested in the manual, it had me at 16 mpg. After breakin, my mileage increased by 4mpg. I haven't obsessively tracked mine, so I'm wondering now if the ECU was wrong initially or if we were driving it just that differently.

I wonder the same thing. I will say that my car was driven 300 miles from another dealership before I took delivery. Im sure it wasnt driven gently then, so the gauge read the lowest I've ever seen it when i bought it. Did your mileage actually jump up after breakin or just gradually increase?

I typically drive pretty conservatively, and always have. I usually shift at 2200-2500 rpm or so, sometimes at 3000, very rarely any higher, except for autocross/track.

It was fairly gradual, but it was only a matter of weeks. I drove it pretty hard after break-in. Still do, but that wouldn't explain an increase. :)

I guess maybe we can chalk it up to different driving styles/habits and different roads/weather possibly. But the hard evidence you've presented makes me think my experience may be the exception, rather than the norm.

jpritche 02-24-2011 03:20 PM

The average for the life of my car is 24.8 That is just what the car calculates(on that ugly silver screen on the left of the steering wheel). However, I have gotten 36 mpg on a tank(followed behind a tractor trailer for far too long to Louisiana)(pretty sure that was the most boring drive of my life), but the worst I have ever gotten is like 15. I am only 18 so I can't afford any tickets, especially not in this car, so I drive pretty safe for the most part.

For those who think the 36mpg is b.s., I have a video somewhere, I believe on my old iphone. The navigation in the car only reads up to 30, but after taking the miles divided by gallons, I came up with like 35.8 so roughly 36.

But like everyone has said, if you are worried about gas mileage you got the wrong car. I like to enjoy my car from 0-60 and then from there, we keep it legal.

samb03 02-24-2011 03:31 PM

going by the screen next to the steering wheel. I got 27 on the 200 mile trip home from the dealer on the interstate. On my commute to work with is 15 miles of high, stop sign, 15 miles of highway, 4 miles of town with 8 or so stop lights I and a couple trips to the bar and grocercry store a couple block from my house I average 21-23mpg.

I have found that I get better milage setting the cruise closer to 70 than at 65 or less.

wat2win 02-24-2011 04:13 PM

Thanks guys, I guess i need to wait and put some more miles and see how my MPG changes

Paul_S 02-24-2011 04:17 PM

At first I was thinking how how bad all your mpg figures are, then I remembered there is a US gallon and an English gallon!

wilsonp 02-24-2011 06:22 PM

jpritche - Simota1 has a vinyl sticker to help with that!

BrickyardZ 02-24-2011 06:59 PM

Remember ... best not to use cruise control during the break in period. Your mileage will improve, but you didn't buy the car for gas mileage did you.

:iagree: cruise control is bad for break-in. You're not supposed to drive a constant speed for prolonged periods.

ProfessorDave 02-24-2011 07:02 PM

My MPGs went up briefly when I installed K&N drop-ins and a F.I. CBE. Then they went back down right away. Can't figure out why....

chops 02-24-2011 07:08 PM

i get about 22-23mpg mixed highway and city, but truth be told i didnt even look at the EPA sticker when i bought the car. i just knew what i wanted

wh1te370z 02-24-2011 08:31 PM

My little silver screen tells me I get 18.3. That is from the day I bought the car w 9 miles on it. Currently at just under 12,000. And I've only had the car for 6 months  I bought my car to drive as u can see lol no garage queen here!! Best I ever got was 21 but I don't drive on the highway and idk what 1/4 throttle is ;)

Nikon FM 02-24-2011 08:38 PM

~10mpg while on the track and average DD at 22.5 mpg

Now at 40k miles and has improved slightly over time and tuning

Red__Zed 02-24-2011 09:55 PM

I average about 28mpg based on my calcs, about 29 according to the trip-meter.

yes i know, it was really late at night (3am) and i was so tired+ my legs needed some time off.... (first time owning manual car)
Today i drove hard as i can (not full but about half thottle) and as hits 3.8rpm changed gears. XD

mick 02-24-2011 10:26 PM

i drive mostly in the city and i am getting about 15 mpg (according to my own calculations).
my mb C320 also gets 15 mpg as well.

cossie1600 02-24-2011 11:13 PM

I get 40 in my Prius :)

One of the first things my father-in-law asked me when he saw the car was...
".. so it's good on gas?" I told him that you don't buy a car like this :stirthepot:for "good" gas mileage.

Ok I want to clarify that i didnt buy this car for MPG, but i was just curious on such a big difference compare to EPA sticker mpg and my actual on highway. I also read somewhere long time ago that as car breaks in, mpg will increase as well. All i wanted to get some answers for these questions and some numbers from forum members, not to get comments like "this car is not for mpg".

Red__Zed 02-25-2011 10:23 AM

You will notice a big increase past 1k or so. I did my first oil change at 1200 miles, and gained about 10mpgs.

you have more problems if the world runs out of nickel, but then i dont mind a free lithium ion upgrade. i keep the z for racing. for stop and go traffic, why am i going to burn premium at a rate of 15mpg when i can do regular at 40mpg. since i drive 20k a year, my fuel saving is about $2000 a year. i do either true city driving or the boring long highway drives, driving a prius or the z makes virtually no difference

elmz 02-25-2011 11:16 AM

Mine reads 21.1 for my daily driving routes.
