I think that was the same part that was included with my base model and was wondering the same thing when I bought it.

Mine went in the trash too, even tho CA requires a front plate. I'm not drilling into my bumper!

Quick question, what's the little red light for? That's located near the map lights.

Mood lighting.

Actually just ambient lighting, so you have a little glow to help you see around the inside of the car at night.
