I saw some news story that was warning against people using scanners in parking lots, and getting your frequency (i guess) when you lock your car with your fob as you're walking away. It gave the advice of: if you see anyone standing around in the parking lot as you're getting out of our car, hit the "lock" button on your door rather than using your fob.
I didn't pay as much attention as I probably should have because I already only use my button on the door (since my fob is generally in my pocket).

Also, as someone who has had a car stolen the old fashioned way (with the steering column ripped out), I'd more than appreciate the less damage being done to the car as possible in case it's found

Makes me think about last summer. I was standing at night on my balcony (actually watching the car under moon light...) when a walker took some sort of device of his jacket put it close to the car when he walked by. He never looked back on the device when he put it back into his jacket and continue his journey... At that time i tought i was a bugler scanning the car for battery leaks (laptop etc...). Could it be the same thing???

That's a little weird, but any chance it was his cell phone or camera of some type? I have seen people before walk by and take a quick pic. I don't know about any sort of scanner for battery leaks, that seems like if it does exist that it is to high tech for petty thieves to have. They are more the smash and grab type only in for what they can see and carry.
