Default service engine soon...

i have been running short rams for 2 months with no problems, i got to dinner, 2 hours later i come back and start my car only to find service engine soon.

what are the chances the short rams caused this, and what if anything else would cause this light to come on. my owners manual is in tampa and i dont have it

It may just be a maintenance reminder.

My gas cap was loose. But the light is still on. Do I have to get it reset or will it go off automatically

It will go off automagically.. after a series of start sequences..

All the more reason to look into a cheap code reader.. check Harbor Freight or the like.. they are getting cheaper everyday..

Any CAN/OBDII reader can read and clear codes, and will save you the $100 a dealer would charge just to tell you the same info.

my buddy works at tires plus so im going to get it checked tomorrow i guess. tightened the gas cap, went for a spin, then started it back up and the light was still on, so i guess when you tighten the gas cap the system doesnt automatically adjust

funny thing is i got gas yesterday and have driven a bunch in between and it never came on.

If it does not go off take it to Autozone, they will read the code for you for free.

if you're modding cars you should get a scanner. as posted above, it's cheap and well worth having around.

I think you guys are confusing a check engine light with the service reminder messages.

The first is a fault code, the second a simple re-settable reminder. Play with your buttons to clear or re-set that..

the original post was about a CEL, not a service reminder. then it turned into a discussion of how long the CEL stay on after you tighten the gas cap back

my cel light came on and after 2 gas caps that didn't fix it it was a gas filter hose of some kind. anyway don't wish for this they had to drop the gas tank and a whole lot of other crap. it was a pain in the butt to get right.
