Try a liquid degreaser-Stand away from the car- spray it on a towel-just enough to get the towel wet--"but not soaked or dripping". "Carefully wipe the window, with the towel , not touching the car body"! It will streak and smear, leaving a film, let it dry! " Now clean it with any windex product"!
Didn't work- Repeat again!
"Make sure your towel less hand doesn't get degresser on it, and touch the car body"!

Outside window only!

for the inside glass try some alcohol mix with distilled water (50/50) in a spray bottle or Griot's Window Cleaner. that or Prima Clarity.

the smears could be on the inside glass too.

I haven't had good luck with Rain-X windshield cleaner on my Z's windshield -- but perhaps you meant regular old Rain-X not the cleaner. I find that to get that super slick windshield feeling I use a very light "scratch X" compound -- Scratch Doctor by Nu Finish works well -- at least it's good for something since it doesn't actually remove any scratches on the car's finish. You probably won't want to do this too often, but a good buffing once to remove all the new window residue probably won't hurt it.

It's for the windshield only, not the car!
