4 tickets - please advise.

Okay so I turned 25, it was the long 4th of July weekend and my friend had a date who got dolled out to me just after he heard from his girlfriend that she was flying down to NY to spend the weekend with him as a surprise. Typical story, people with 370z's whoplease don't taunt at me :-) I know this is a free speech forum yada yada but please don't reply with more than this:

Anyway, I got pulled over on the LIE, Nassau County NY. He said he got me at 97 but gave me an 80 on a 55. He also gave me a following too close ticket.

I will be getting hold of an attorney though I know I was speeding... all that is fine and I will pay whats needed.

BUT - I also got two tickets for tints - one for sides and one for the non-existent "REAR SIDES" on the Z. He measured the sides with the device and it said 72. When I got my tints, I clearly told the shop to give me LEGALS. I guess (and now after Googling it around), the Z already has some factory tint by default so even a "legal" tint on top actually makes it illegal in NY. I am honestly not guilty about this. Specially for the REAR SIDE - there's nothing there really (and neither did the officer have a way of MEASURING IT). The tint shop clearly said it is legal, of course they didn't want to tell me that there might be factory tint already, now that I researched the issue.

So... is there some factory tint already on the Z? Like I said, the device read 72 with a "legal" tint + whatevers on there from before.

you can black out the rear windows in a car if you want, i'm pretty sure, and not get a fine.

Yeah New York state is concerned with your front windshield and front windows. Your rears can be tinted to your preference.

An attorney ASAP is smart; and its not the fines of course, it's the points. Good luck.

Also, was it highway patrol in a Charger?

XwChriswX 07-06-2010 04:37 PM

Speaking from my personal expereince, when I had my windows tinted, the tinter checked all windows and there was NO factory tint applied.

fullmonty 07-06-2010 04:43 PM

Watch the tailgating ticket, I know in Jersey its 4 points.

toxik 07-06-2010 04:44 PM

lawyer is all you can really do about the speeding tickets. as far as the tint tickets, i'm sure those will get dismissed. i've heard a ton of cases (in NY) where people get add-on tickets to their speeding ones, just because the cop goes on a power trip; usually with a lawyer, all of those get dismissed as the judge is well aware of that.

Get a lawyer.

Get a copy of the receipt for the tint purchase showing what tints you ordered.

Give it to the lawyer.

Togo 07-06-2010 05:01 PM

I give this thread a few more hours before it gets locked too, if that long. This has disaster written all over it. :icon14:

I was a little shocked myself but the forum is slow at the moment so I extended my initial prediction...

Togo 07-06-2010 05:06 PM

Why is your friend going on a date with another girl when he has a girl friend? Why have a girl friend? I don't get it.. why not just be single and not lie to either of them and just have lots of "friends"?

Word to the wise... video tape all sexual escapades.. trust me!

1.)How many points do you have already?
2.)Are you eligible to pay off tickets without any points?
3.)You're not as screwed as you think you are... Just get ready to pay 500+
Gotta pay to play, sucks you got caught...
Get a V1!

I like the passport myself, but regardless, I agree on getting yourself a good fuzz buster. The thing only has to work once to pay for itself.

Zsteve 07-06-2010 05:56 PM

My tints came with a sticker from the installer stating they are legal but dont know how far that would work if I was ticketed for it. Sometimes you gotta pay to play. And at a fairly young age ins is going to go way up. Good luck.

spearfish25 07-06-2010 06:08 PM

When the cop hands you four tickets, just say 'no thank you'. Then make a snide comment about his trooper hat, spit on his aviator glasses and whack him with your door.

That way, we'll have one less reckless driver on the streets doing 97mph. Drive the speed limit and sign up for a track day.

What's the point?

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW YORK?
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New York, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
• Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
• Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in. (or 30% total tint)
• Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
• Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

It's a light transmission number which includes the factory tint (yeah we have some)

Even a 25% tint film (and NOBODY here goes that light) could be illegal when combined with the factory tint (which is usually around 10%)

YOu can even see it, though it's light like most factory tints:

I'm guessing it has more with the state being broke than a power trip

My point is that if you ordered a legal tint but they gave you something illegal then the shop could be held accountable for hte screw up...

That's really the only "out". Can't fight the state cause he WAS out of compliance..

Yeah the state doesn't give a ****, he's ******.. they tested him and he failed.. but if he ordered legal tints and they didn't give him legal tints then that's some shady ****..

Then again.. if someone wasn't doing 97 on 495 in NC which is known for having stricter cops than than SC.. this wouldn't be a topic on a forum..

at least i have some reading material tonight..:stirthepot:

yeah.. pissed he was working! hahahah actually Nassau County cop working a holiday.. yeah i wouldn't be pissed at all.. if he had 8 years on, he's top pay so that's maybe $60+ per hour at OT...

Togo 07-06-2010 07:02 PM

Actually I just did the math.. OT pay would be $78/hour for a top pay PO

Zaggeron 07-06-2010 07:10 PM

How fast was the guy going that you were tailgating? Or was it more like a "closing too quickly" rather than a "following too closely" lol.

sonic370 07-06-2010 07:30 PM

Has anyone caught on 97 and tailgating!
Sorry if you were following that close at 100
you had it coming. that's why the cop busted you for the tint.

i'm all for a good time but here i would have ended up riding home in the back
of a patrol car

dudafunk 07-06-2010 07:42 PM

Yep I'm glad he was generous and gave me an 80 on a 55 when I was actually going faster.. ::facepalm::

dudafunk 07-06-2010 07:43 PM

The "tailgating" really occurred because of bad timing - I was revving to exit out of the HOV lane and the cop happened to spot me right then. Few seconds before that, the car ahead of me was far enough. :(

Jeffblue 07-06-2010 07:50 PM

i think your insurance will not go up as much/you won't get as many points if you get the 80 in a 55 + the tint tickets instead of getting the 97 in a 55 and no tint tickets. you made out ok given the circumstances. I've not gone past 90 in my car and that was once right after i got past 1200 miles.

Hey all, first post. I hope I don't get flamed for being an LEO myself, but the individual did cut you a big break for the unlawful speed. Down here in Florida, 30 MPH+ is mandatory court appearance; not sure about your state. Hopefully it's not a criminal traffic violation.

Following too closely - Not sure of what the statute reads for your state but it's not too promising combined with the unlawful speed.

The tint - Definitely get the receipt provided from your tint shop. Hopefully the tint meter was not calibrated and it'll be dismissed upon showing documentation.
