Anyone ever get stopped for missing front plate?

I live in TX. It's a great state even though it is a bit warm (and as I have come to learn, the Z doesn't really like that too much) but here in TX they MANDATE a front license plate. Well, today on my way home from work (in Dallas) I did a little random sampling and the best I could tell is that about 1 in 20 cars don't have front plates. Most every BMW, Corvette, Infinity, Mercedes, and Lexus I saw didn't.

So, for those of you living in a state where they are required by law yet you don't have one installed, do you get harassed much?

I currently have one on mine but hate it. Not just appearance wise but I honestly thing it messes with the air flow to the radiator a bit.

kgreen 06-24-2010 10:47 PM

yup i got told by an off-duty state trooper that if he ever saw me again with it off he would write me up! of course i had to put it on since i drove pass his house everyday going to and coming from work. i think the car looks so much better without it but oh well

Josh@STILLEN 06-24-2010 10:50 PM

Sucks to get hassled.. but yes, getting pulled over does happen quite a bit, both in Texas and California for sure.

We've sold a lot of these.. give flexibility to when you want to rock the plate, when you don't.. (I know a lot of guys have used this to just get the fix-it ticket taken care of, or parking in certain places.. here in CA they will send meter maids to write tickets for no front plate)

I'm lucky enough to live where the front plate is not required. Yes, it sucks to be you living where it's a law. The 370 looks so much better without a front plate, IMHO.

WShade 06-24-2010 11:01 PM

I have not run a front plate on any of my cars since 2004 and I have only been pulled over once. That one time it was in a very small town courtesy of the good old boy speed trap. Although, I was not speeding. I have several friends who are cops and they tell me that most cops in large cities will not bother to pull you over for not running a front plate only. He went on to advise that their captain tells them not to as they have more important things to do. But, they will add it on if you are already pulled over for a speeding or other moving violation.

KillerBee370 06-24-2010 11:02 PM

I think I've only ever been stopped once or twice... ever. I will never put a front plate on and if I do get stopped I will simply pay the measly fine and go back to no plate.

Nothing more than a lame revenue collecting law. Like we don't have enough of that crap huh?

batman_4 06-24-2010 11:03 PM

with the 370 i have yet to be hassled for no front plate. been pulled over 2 times and neither for plate....i only put the plate on when i'm going out at night, don't want to have to deal w/cops then.

STILLEN : STILLEN Front License Plate Bracket

Got one, works well and doesn't look that bad even though it's off center. Use it when I have to go into Chicago or when I have to park at o'hare airport, they just drive around the airport parking lot to look for missing front plates... Got my only plate ticket there, one day before the Stillen holder was delivered.
Other then that, front plate is off. And yes, in Illinois a front plate is required.

Auston 06-24-2010 11:07 PM

no front plate gives law enforcement an automatic reason to pull you over, hope you don't order a drink with your dinner

Jesse_Hunter 06-24-2010 11:15 PM

I have been pulled over in my old eclipse because the trooper claimed he didn't see that I did infact have a front plate. I don't mind having it on my Z I think it looks fine.

Yeah I totally agree with this. I love the fact that cops will tailgate me all the time only to realize they have absolutely no excuse to use for pulling me over, and drive off.

Lemers 06-24-2010 11:35 PM

:iagree: there are a lot of cars in texas without front plates
:iagree: it's a valid reason to be pulled over
:iagree: it's usually a tag on ticket to other violations.
:iagree: agree with getting and loving the stillen plate bracket

fairladyZ34 06-25-2010 12:47 AM

i know that the town i live in would have a field day if they saw me with no front plate, they are haters:shakes head:

Red370 06-25-2010 12:49 AM

put it in your front window, problem solved.

i wish that was the case here. I've been pulled over in a different vehicle using that method. I've even seen people mount them to the bottom of their passenger sun visor and drive with it down all the time...front bumper or violation :shakes head:

Again, its usually just a reason for them to pull you over and look for other crap on your car/record.

I believe the law says it just has to be visible from the front. So the particular officers that ticketed you were just being douchebags. BTW, I lived in Texas for the better part of 8 years, never mounted a front plate, never ticketed. Oh yeah, now I live in OK, have Texas plates, and still dont have a plate on the front and I drive onto a military installation 4 times a day. Front plates ruin the looks of the car, im sorry, to me, they just do. I refuse, regardless if I get a ticket or not, to put one on.

I live in Texas, I havent gotten a ticket yet and I dont have front plate. I think if you are not acting like a idiot racing and stuff most cops care less.

Cmike2780 06-25-2010 08:27 AM

Get the stillen bracket. It's easy enough to take off and you don't have to drill holes into your front bumper like the factory plate holder. It's expensive for a bracket, but worth it.

The plate on the window didn't work for me and was annoying to look at when driving.

Liquid_G 06-25-2010 09:20 AM

Have never been stopped, but once when parking in a garage in Chicago here, I was ticketed for no front plate.. The meter maids actually go into the private parking garages and issue tickets here.. awesome...

TX_370 06-25-2010 09:23 AM

I got stopped once by a state trooper for not having a front plate. He asked me if i knew of the texas law that requires to license plates on a car and i said nope. LOL! He asked why i removed and i said it was scratching the paint...he let me go with a warning.

Jeffblue 06-25-2010 09:24 AM

funny. i just took off my front plate today to fix the mounting bracket. The dealer drilled the right hole too big so it would wobble. i just replaced the shitty plastic drywall mounting screw with a toggle bolt and its all good now. but while the plate and bracket were off i was like WOW that looks so much better.

steveg78 06-25-2010 10:03 AM

been driving around since March with no front plate... All is good so far. Moving to a state that doesn't require a front plate in Sept. So I already have my story for Mr. Po-po if it happens. And what kind of jacka$$ do you have to be to warn someone when you're off-duty? I would have said, Sure Mr. Officer, I'll be looking for you when you're on-duty. Honestly, I have a lot of friends in law enforcement and they don't go after people for petty sh|t like this. I guess it depends on where you live.

3SeventyZ 06-25-2010 04:19 PM

Never got a front plate.

get a stillen bracket!

I know of some people here in NYC that not only got stopped for no front plate, but actually came back to tickets on their car while they were street parked with no front plate.... that's ridiculous!

kenchan 06-25-2010 07:46 PM

our state requires a front plate. ive been pulled over several times with just verbal warnings....after a while it got old, i just put the front plate on.

fuct 06-27-2010 12:47 PM

does the Stillen bracket fit the Nismo's?

esfourteen 06-27-2010 02:11 PM

NY requires it, but I haven't used the front plate on any of my cars for the last 8 years, no tickets. I did get harassed by a cop at a tollbooth at midtown tunnel in the Z, he looked pretty pissed off, maybe he was having a bad day.

Soon 06-27-2010 03:21 PM

NY
no problem so far

they see the Z and seem to forget i dont have one cuz its so niiiiiice

He was probably mad cuz his old woman wont let go of his balls and let him buy a 370

sonic370 06-27-2010 07:14 PM

Now you got me thinking. Live in Texas drove my corvette for 5 years with no front plate and never a problem. Think i'll take mine off and see what happens.
It looks cleaner without it.

tmjohansen 06-27-2010 07:20 PM

I live in Omaha, Nebraska, and it is a law to have a front plate. I had a Volvo S40 for two years and have now have a G35 coupe with out the plate on the front. I have never been pulled over for it. On the other hand, my brother has a Mazda RX-8 since 2004, and he got a ticket for not having one on his car from a state trooper. He still has it off though. Most cars look dumb with a plate on the front and it is a stupid law...oh well.

StLRedrider 06-27-2010 07:54 PM

hell yes, cop was an A-h0le and almost went to jail over it

DeLRo 06-28-2010 03:11 AM

I live in California and I used to get pulled over all the time for front plate. Once even by 4 cops on foot. Just bought an out of state 370Z and I love how cops pull up beside me for either front plate or tint. Then drop back behind me to find out of state tags. Then they speed off.

nvmd Margaret at Stillen answered me...... and that is no it doesnt fit.

IHas370Z? 06-28-2010 08:55 PM

8 months and never pulled over for no front plate... thought all was good until the other day I got a ticket while I was parked at the mall. Didn't even think that could happen.

nogoodname 06-28-2010 08:57 PM

After reading this thread, so happy I don't have front plate laws where I live.

Cjanik 06-28-2010 09:30 PM

NV requires front plates, but there's one catch, "Only if you have a front bracket for the plate". hahahaha

i love the NV loophole.

cmancha003 06-28-2010 09:45 PM

Been pulled over 4 times for no front plate. First time was a Tx state trooper. I informed him I had the plate in the car and thought it was only legal if on the front bumper and he said no as long as it is visable. The 3 other times were near my neighborhood where the cops patrol. I did have the plate inside on the windshield but since that is not normally where they are they pulled me over anyway. I guess they just look at one place and none others. I bet they would have never noticed if the wife was flashing them or something :icon23:

NeedforZ 06-29-2010 01:58 AM

Hey another McKinney Z. No problems so far in the year I've had the car. And I know they've seen me without the front lic plate. Just don't give them a reason to pull you over.

chainsaw39 06-30-2010 11:17 AM

plate

I live in Montana. By law I am supposed to have a front plate. I drove my 350 for 3 yrs. without it and have been driving my 370 nismo for about 6 mo's without it. I have never been stopped and hope I am not because the holder looks like **** and I don't want to drill holes in my car.
