For the last eight years I've been working in a precision machine shop as a CNC programmer/ set-up man. During that time I've undertaken a few personal hobby projects when I had the time, and of course a worthy cause.

The Z is most defiantly a worthy cause.

I am a damned good machinist, with access to top of the line equipment and CAM software. However I lack the creative vision, and automotive knowledge base it takes to design great components.

I'm looking for some ideas of parts you guys would like to see available for the 370Z. I'm thinking more like aesthetic upgrades as opposed to performance upgrades.

Example: Replace the interior plastic door handles with billet aluminum ones that are exactly the same as the stock ones, only they match the exterior handles as far as color and feel. ( maybe this part exists already??? )

I like to work in aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper and to a lesser extent firmer plastics. Prefer mill work, but lathes available. Electroplating and anodizing etc...available.

Check my photo album for pictures of some of the parts I've made for various industries as well as the machines at my shop.

If there's anyone on the forum with a history in CAD, design, GD&T, or just plain good ideas I'd appreciate their input.

Here's the kicker. If you help me design a part, and I actually end up making one for my car, I'll send you one for your car as fair trade for your help.

sounds good man, I am a Mechanical Engineer and if I have some time on my hands, I'll design some things on my Solidworks. I've been trying to find a place that would make it for me. This is really good news! Hope to work together in the future.

scruffydog 05-27-2010 01:53 AM

if you guys are interested in that logo, I can probably come up with a 3D CAD model of the emblem (Front and Back) by sometime early next week. I get some practice while I'm at it. But to be honest, I'm pretty familiar with Machine shops as I work as an R&D Engineer and I constantly get quotes...one time I made an emblem and it was SUPER SUPER expensive since it's machined; not molded.

Either way, I'm down to help everyone here as I love to draw stuff on CAD. Brackets, door handles, whatever. I was even thinking of coming up with a brake duct cooling kit if I can get enough ideas to help me out. Let me take a crack at it when I get back Friday.

dumb question, but would the engine run cooler if it did not have the cover on it?

No question is dumb, but this is way off topic for this thread. You may want to repost in the a different section pertaining to the engine itself. I am sure someone will answer you. Good luck!

Gas door surround like the old Shelbys? RP

Bromotoz 05-27-2010 04:21 PM

I would like a compact flash slot cover, maybe with a "Z" engraved on it.

Yes!!!! You are exactly the person I was hoping would reply to this thread. I am also fluent in solidworks, have 2005 on my home computer and 2010 at the shop. I also have a 2010 CAMworks license, which will allow me to import any models you create and output g-code direct to my CNCs. Can't wait to start working on this! Can't wait to see your designs!

AgStacker 05-27-2010 06:42 PM

any body got a picture of the front of the car w/ badge removed?

Caravanshaka 05-27-2010 07:21 PM

How about a radiator overflow tank or an oil cap in the shape of a z?

LunaZ 05-31-2010 11:54 AM

Count me in for matching front and rear badges that actually fit our car.

i'm gonna start drawing both the front/rear emblems today in the afternoon...hopefully i'll have something tomorrow. Keep you guys informed.

370ZzZz 06-01-2010 10:08 AM

Keep us updated! I'm really interested in this!

scruffydog 06-01-2010 11:31 PM

sorry it's taking awhile....i finally had some free time to draw the base of the front emblem...just wanna keep everyone informed...i took the dimensions and have the front emblem drawn. I will now edit the emblem and put the new 370 "Z" icon in the middle.

Here's what i have so far....
http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...an-emblems.jpg

It's pretty hard to take measurements off the stock emblems because I still have it on the car...i realize that there are some bumps on the bumper behind the emblem...i can always add those pockets features in later on. I'm trying so hard to not scratch my car with the calipers....anyways, i gotta drop off a friend at the airport right now, i'll work on it a little more tonight.

AgStacker 06-01-2010 11:55 PM

Nice drawing, its great to see this starting to come together. We'll be sporting custom badges in no time. Feel free to send me the solidworks file at your convenience, I'd like to take a "closer look"

Got your e-mail. I've just sent you the Front and Rear emblems as is. I put it in 2 configuration, one without the standoff and one with. Check it out and let me know what you think. In the meantime, I'm thinking of creating 2 sets of emblems. One as is, but instead of saying "Nissan" it'll say "nismo" and the other set I'll just replace that middle portion with the new "Z" logo.

Let me know if you guys have any more ideas.

scruffydog 06-02-2010 10:31 AM

So far this is what I have...the hollowed Center....awaiting for the New Z Logo
http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...low-center.jpg

theDreamer 06-02-2010 10:34 AM

Wow, this is turning out nicely.
Cannot wait to see it done with a Z emblem.

There are a lot of people looking for brake cooling ducts. If you can mfg some bracketing that attaches to the brakes somehow and gets air flow to them, you would be successful. I would be happy to be a guinea pig.

Can you make me "Supercharged" badges or door sill inserts in cursive letters?

E-brake and shifter surrounds in aluminum would be cool.

Could you make some underbody bracing?

I'd be happy to test any of these ideas out.

Correct me if I'm wrong AG - personally, I think we could do all that...but if it's things like the under body bracing, I would think it'd cost more for a machine shop to make it than to have you buy one out there because of the quantity AG will be able to mass produce. Unless you're looking for a customized one....i.e. modifications to an existing one, hopefully better with even more reinforcement, then it may make it worthwhile in terms of cost.

Otherwise, I think all the things listed above I can come up with a CAD model.

I'm definitely interested in creating some brake ducts as one of my next project though....and possibly a Camera Mount for the Strut bar inside the car.

LinPark 06-02-2010 12:14 PM

Count me in for the emblems (front and rear) - I like the new Z format over the 350Z one - if you want to go old school and maybe cover up the nubs underneath maybe something like this from the old Z's?

http://www.the370z.com/members/linpa...c-z-emblem.jpg

Maybe you could make the squiggly in the center more horizontal and slighly larger to cover things up. Just an idea.

Holliday 06-02-2010 12:32 PM

PLEASE NO!!!

The emblem needs to match the (Z) that is already on the car. Not squiggly or shaped differently!

NEW Z LOGO ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

scruffydog 06-02-2010 12:32 PM

so far I have the Z emblem drew just like the
http://www.courtesyparts.com/images/...62890-Z7FR.jpg
except it's the new Z emblem.

But I am trying to work out a design that will cover all the nubs....the hardest part is I don't really have the dimension for the nubs unless I take my own emblem off - which I kinda wanna NOT do.

Will anyone here be nice enough to provide the dimensions for me? (see following picture)

I would like to know the dimension for the following nubs....

http://images41.fotki.com/v9/photos/...MG_2046-vi.jpg

Unless of course, I can always fill out the whole inside Oval with a thinkness...which i kinda don't wanna do....at the same time, I kind of don't want to distort the "Z" logo to fit over the nubs

Holliday 06-02-2010 12:37 PM

It should match this as best as the machining process will allow.

Holliday 06-02-2010 12:48 PM

You could leave the (Z) large and just add this behind it to cover the stock holes and dimples. I don't know if you you can do it at different depths? You know, have the (Z) stick out the most, then the frame and center bar would be underneath it giving it depth and contrast.

http://www.thezstore.com/store/graph...arge311037.jpg

Holliday 06-02-2010 12:56 PM

One more thought, what about doing it as one piece? Where it would be cut out it can just be recessed. Then it could be painted black to contrast it or people could have it color matched. Some people may even leave it all machined as one color? It gives more options anyways.:hello:

true, I can always do that but the "Z" may not stand out as much...i'll do as much options as possible....thanks for all the ideas guys!

Lemers 06-02-2010 01:04 PM

Once you get the front and rear embelems worked out. The next thing I would sugest is "z" embelem wheel caps. Just to continue removing the word "Nissan" from the outside of the car. The "z" is such a special car that anyone who matters knows it's a Nissan.

scruffydog 06-02-2010 01:08 PM

Here's what I have so far...but obviously it won't work because it doesn't cover the nubs (unless of course you decide to shave it off)....I'll try to work on matching it as close to the side markers as possible. I personally wanna get away from the Hamburger style as possible. I'll just make fill up the foot print of the stock Nissan emblem.

http://www.the370z.com/members/scruf...70z-emblem.jpg

EDIT:
I added some fillets to the "Z" logo on the edges...just a very minor touch up.

LONDON2012 06-02-2010 01:20 PM

This is coming along exactly as I had hoped. Great work!!

scruffydog 06-02-2010 04:00 PM

Here's an update on the "Z" emblem....I improved the "Z" and put some draft angle along the sides, also if you look at the cross section of it (side view), you notice I also put 2 curve lines running down from the split line. This should look almost identical to the 370z OEM emblem. With this Z emblem I can resize and reuse it to wherever.....i.e. wheel hub caps. Check it out....Enjoy!

 nice work, +rep

scruffydog 06-02-2010 04:11 PM

Who dig this? I have the center hollowed part filled...but it's height is offset from the top of the Z logo. And i also have the center part blacked out....

Endgame 06-02-2010 05:15 PM

I LOVE your examples. I actually like it better without the black out for the front and with the black out for the rear.

Unfortunately, I still need to fill it with something because it needs to cover up the nubs (from bumper)....I can remove the black color and just have it bare metal look...

Anybody got more ideas?

scruffydog 06-02-2010 06:04 PM

Here's the second design, I tried to make it as close as the side marker. Unfortunately the difficulty I'm facing is trying to match a Full Circle with an Oval. Anyways, here it is....

I could get down with that last one, I think a brushed aluminum look would be great actually, what do yall think would look good on red? I think the Z emblem with the dark background would look too subdued, thoughts?

So here are the comparison.....

Z1804 06-02-2010 07:24 PM

I am amazed by the level of creativity I've observed. I'm not half as creative as the people on here, so I've just been following the thread. However, for what it's worth, I think the 2nd design is the best. thezstore.com already has something similar to the design of number 3. Whichever one you guys create, I will be purchasing one.
