You bring up some good questions about the new 7AT, and I don't think the answers are there just quite yet. From early reviews it sounds like the new manual works very well, but I have yet to read anything about the 7AT. I am interested to see how well it performs as compared to other aggressive automatic sports cars, but when it comes down to it the thing is still a tradition automatic and not a dual clutch auto manual. I would like to drive the new 7AT and try out the flappy paddles - but I would most certainly plan on buying the manual. I guess it largely depends on your commute and tastes. Ask yourself why you want to stick with the Z and what it is that you like about it, undoubtedly the manual shifting is part of that experience. |

Ok I have owned six vehicles in my life. 4 automatics and two manuals, one a five spd, and one 6spd. I have never owned a legit paddle shifter, or sequential shifter.
My question is, can you heat your tires with a 7AT?, Is it just that fast off the line, or is there a way? Not having a clutch pedal confuses me when you have shifting options. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. |

The same 7 speed automatic is in both the g37 sedan and coupe along with the paddle shifters, etc... You can go to infiniti G sites to read about what people say about it or go to one of the mags (motortrend, etc...) and see what they say about it. I have the 5 speed auto with the paddle shifters in my G and love it. I've read nothing but positive things about the 7 speed, faster, slightly better fuel economy, fast shifting, etc... The manual won't be much faster than the 7 speed auto if at all...

I assume the gearing has changed some in the switch? I will have to drive one to try it out. |

You would think there probably would be differences in gearing simply because they're different vehicles but I know that G sedans/coupes aren't geared conservatively (they're suppose to compete with cars like the bmw 3 series) so the gearing ratios might be closer than we'd expect... I used to have a V6 2003 Nissan Altima SE and that is the only Nissan/Infiniti car I've driven that I didn't care for the gearing (they were still using 4 speeds in the automatics back then).

I've got the 6MT and it seems like one too many gears. What do you do with the seventh?
