Hey guys, so I decided to do some research on exhaust today...
Came across that hfc is illegal...
Now what I really want to know is, what happens if a cop pulls you over?

Like lets say the cop happened to be a 370z fanatic and knew everything about the mods that can be done. And points out that hfc was added. Is it just a simple fix it ticket or is it like severe ticket or wtf happens?! lol

The worst thing that can happen is they confiscate your car.

I dont think the HFC looks much different then a normal CAT so I dont think there will be any problem. I would like a Cop or a judge prove that its a "high Flow" cat and not just a normal one. What is Illegal at least in the state of NY is removing a CAT that is I think less then 3 years old or has less the 50 or 60K in it. Something like that.

Or is damaged.

You live in a communist state, god knows what could happen, but the average cop is like anyone else. They don't want to do any more work than necessary, so shut your car off ASAP and he probably won't be crawling around on his belly on the side of the road looking for it. If he's that much of a Z nut, he probably won't write you a ticket anyway.

Unless you get the state trooper I did lol, he knew quite a bit about the Z and even said he owned a NISMO. Still didn't get me out of a ticket though. Iirc the federal law governs the emissions system and i think the fine can be up to 20kright. I would love to meet someone who has received a fine for putting in a hfc. I could see aa fix-it ticket, but I am willing to bet 99% of cops and emissions stations would see a cat and not say a word about it.

A lot of companies to cover their a$$ will put a statement like: "Not for public road use" or something like that.

You're right. The Northeast and CA are catalyst states for overt communist laws. An experiment to see how they can keep our whole country under communist rule. But don't get it twisted the South has a flipside social communism. We are screwed bruh. Screwed!

Depending on what type of exhaust you run, the cop could give you a Ref ticket based on how loud your car would be but that is more common with cars running Test Pipes than anything else.

Really it depends on your area, some cities are more strict than others.

HFC is perfectly legal to have, I passed visual inspection in NY with HFCs on, they have cats... thats all that is required.

According to federal law though you aren't supposed to mess with the cats unless they get damaged or have been on the car for more than 80k miles.

Careful, the OP is in California and we have very strict laws on modifying smog related items.

As of 2008 all aftermarket Cats are illegal:

OP, I wouldn't worry about it since you don't have a few years until smog but really you run them at your own risk..

I kind of thought the same way after my post, I do know that CA is very strict with emissions. It's just so hard for me to understand how anyone would be able to tell that they are aftermarket cats, unless you know what OEM 370z cats visually look like, they are basically the same.

Yeah I agree visually it's very similar but noise-wise and emission test wise they would be able to tell.

Honestly though most people get popped for TP's not HFC's.

Most things to do with modifications on exhaust are illegal in California.
