when i took delivery of my car, the salesman told me to never turn vdc off ???

that's good advice, will really increase your chance of stay out of prangs...

save it for the track or skid pan

I believe the 408 was a concept that never came out in the 80s...

That's a bit rich IMO. Spend some time at car control clinics, and you'll find the Z is actually a pussy cat with VDC off. It's a handful until you take time to master (or at least get proficient with )RWD dynamics, but after that, it's a ton of fun. :driving::rock:

Lol you put my creation in your ava :icon18:

im gonna wait untill its warmer untill I do a VDC off launch.

I mean most of the time the end breaks loose quite hard even with it on

6spd 03-04-2010 03:01 PM

I am very eager to take some HPDE classes. They are quite expensive though, but worth it over the long haul.

yeah i found this whole "friend turned it off" excuse absolutely hilarious, esp since the vdc always defaults back on whenever the engine is restarted. got caught with their pants down :bowrofl:

Traction control

Any one else turn off the TC right when they get in?

My thoughts:
I want to know where my car's breaking points are in regards to traction as well as engine performance.
I push the rear as much as possible to get a feel of where the traction lets go in corners as well as light to light.
I LOVE TO DRIVE!!!

Just wondering how many others love to push their cars for what there made for.

Lol thanks... I searched but not for specifics..

JWillis72 12-24-2013 07:10 PM

It's only on when the roads are wet or I'm driving to work.

RoadsterST 12-24-2013 07:28 PM

Mine stays off. There is no better way to get used to your car limits and yours...

winnre 12-24-2013 10:56 PM

Have not noticed a difference on or off yet in daily driving, but I have to really push it. Still in the newlywed phase.

mab864 12-25-2013 09:45 AM

In the winter time in the PNW the roads are always wet... so it's always on. If the roads are dry and clear sometimes I turn it off. It's fun to wag the tail once in a while. But even under ideal conditions most of the time it's on for me.

nmjaxx9 12-25-2013 03:15 PM

Wackkkkkk. Always keep VDC off, it limits hp. :inoutroflpuke:

Seriously though I dont care for it, i just switch it on when I want. Most of the times its off because of the fun factor involved. :driving:

fzgood 12-25-2013 10:31 PM

Keep it on when it's wet. Otherwise, I turn it off because it's easier to rev match. I drive pretty conservatively and give all my attention to the road while in the Z.

Firebase99 12-26-2013 05:40 AM

Always off. Wet, snow, ice, oil. Im the best driver that ever lived.

scottIN 12-26-2013 07:25 AM

I've told this story on here before, but a buddy of mine was driving my Z for the first time. He's a good driver, but doesn't mind putting it sideways on an exit ramp or such. So we're driving out of his neighborhood & he starts looking down at the dash & controls like he's trying to find something.

Steve: "Where's the traction control off button?"
Me: "It's in the trunk."

IMHO : The VDC can be a royal pain in the a--

Logically, the more you get used to the car the more you want more performance.

The VDC is non adjustable so you are stuck with using it either ON or OFF.

With it ON (default) it won't let you do the things real driving enthusiasts want to do.
If you feel the need to accelerate on occasion to pass or race - it cuts out the injectors and you bog down ... with a slow recovery to normal acceleration ... bummer as you see that Mini Cooper pass you by.

With it OFF the car gets 'happy' in the rear and you go sideways...especially if you are not going exactly straight to begin with.
Not fun looking at oncoming traffic bearing down on you.

There are a lot of things you can do to improve your car's handling and performance...Tires, Brakes, Suspension

But, as for the the (factory) VDC ... ??? ... disappointing, and I'm being kind.

The Race Logic Traction Control (from GTM) is a good option - it offers user adjustability and keeps the wheels from spinning and the car going straight.
It reacts quickly and recovers almost immediately.

You can get it with the PNP harness' for the Z which greatly simplifies the installation.

It might be possible that UpRev and ECUtek also have a traction solution available with their tunes...
but not 100% sure on this.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Riptide67 12-27-2013 03:56 PM

I never really think about it. It's wet most of the time so I keep it on. But I have shut it off a few times.

7speed 01-07-2014 12:57 PM

Personally I keep vdc on most of time but when I know of situations where I'm gonna be flogging but paying attention, I'll turn it off, especially to keep power from cutting.

I found an article on Nismo but the writer warns about vdc off but also sums up Z in the first sentence for me.

"The Nismo 370Z is a throwback to a time when you had to really know how to drive a car to get the most out of it. There are only 100.4 in. between the front and rear tires, 4 fewer shorter than the old 350Z's from 2003 to 2008. That shortness causes the 370Z to be a bit twitchy and tail-happy, like a Subaru BRZ, but with higher limits. The Nismo 370Z doesn't have a multitude control modes like most newer sports cars that allow even inexperienced drivers to feel like racing rock stars. It has two: Stability control on, and a mode that will read you your Last Rites if you run short of talent."

Love it..

Chuck33079 01-07-2014 01:36 PM

It's really not that bad with the VDC off assuming you're on dry pavement. It's fairly easy to control assuming a reasonable amount of car control skill. It's not like it's an old 911 or something.

Let's shorten this again: "...know how to drive a car..."

Yes, learn how to drive a car without depending on the vehicle's computer to do it for ya. Us old guys grew up with rear wheel drive and posi-traction. Just as many accidents back then as there are now with the newer cars and dynamic control mechanisms. Shouldn't there be less accidents? I know my insurannce rates never go down.

street2soul 01-08-2014 02:08 PM

first thing i do as soon as starting my car is pushing that VDC button to off. rain or no rain

ajc1884 06-03-2014 09:55 AM

Mine is always ON.

Fountainhead 06-03-2014 10:52 AM

Mine is always on too, I don't drive aggressively enough to even need it. Sad, I know.

Haboob 06-03-2014 11:03 AM

Off on surface streets, but on when I'm on the freeway.

If it rains here (rare) I'll leave it on.

Countless times I've made a right-hand turn and went to accelerate (normally) and it felt like I missed a shift or something, but the TCS just cut power. **** that annoying ****, making me look bad and almost killing me. :shakes head:

Akurei 06-03-2014 11:44 AM

I always keep VDC off. I was taking a fast sharp turn while vdc was on, and the tires spinned a little bit and it cut throttle on me making me cruise like 1 mph on the turn, the guy in oncoming traffic had to slow down for me to get in the lane. Very embarrassing and dangerous. With VDC on, you have to drive normally. Such as when you'll have to wait until its clear enough to take a turn and you'll be waiting there a long time if there is a lot of traffic. I can't explain it clear enough, you can drive easy with vdc on, but if you ever had to give it more gas and tires spin just a little bit, have fun with that

njobe89 06-03-2014 12:25 PM

I have not driven with it off one time yet... i now when it was raining and i wanted to see how it would react i hit the gas coming out a parking lot and it shot the car straight. i'm fine with that, knowing there is way less of a chance of the car spinning out when wet or something. As far as accelerating and when passing cars, my car never loses power or anything with the vdc on... even when i go from a stop and hit it from 1st it still goes, granted it doesn't burn out, but when tires are this expensive i don't mind it not burning out :D lol

kfull 06-03-2014 05:41 PM

off 24/7 unless it's winter and my snow tires are on.

Dixnot 06-04-2014 11:54 AM

There is soooo much hwy construction around my area that the roads and hwys constantly have dirt and dust from all the work. Even with it on sometimes just getting on the ramps can be a little bit twitchy. :-/ so its always on for now

Zerocool 06-04-2014 05:14 PM

I haven't tried yet and I've had my Z since late march. Hard finding a nice stretch of road in nyc.

I might try it at an empty lot. I need new tires anyway :D

mayday813 06-04-2014 08:57 PM

If my memory is correct (I'm old so it may not be entirely accurate), most the members who have experienced motor vehicle crashes had the VDC turned off. In a panic situation strange things happen.....and, the computer doesn't panic.
To each their own.
