In my case it's a trunk I'm closing and I use it every day. I have taught myself to reach up to the point where the third brake light is and to place my fingers on that, rather than the paint, to close it.
This keeps fingerprints off the car at all times. I'm not sure what you mean by "when the car is dirty..."
