My 370Z is a Lemon

Has anyone else had the same problem as me? My oil temp never really goes above 220 but it burns oil like crazy. They had to rebuild my motor once and they put a new block in a couple of months ago and it is still burning oil. My state has lemon laws but I am wondering if there is someone out there who had to turn theirs back in. Was it easy or did they try to make you keep the car?

Thanks,
Ryan

What is the rate at which it burns oil?

PapoZalsa 01-17-2010 06:57 PM

It will all depend on your state lemon law. A lawyer would help also.

BTW, is not easy! It took a friend of mine about 2 to 3 months for turn in after the vehicle was deem a lemon.

New Motors burn a little oil while they breakin...

nogoodname 01-17-2010 07:24 PM

Took a year for Nissan to buy back a g37 that had a fuel tank issue....

Yeah, but he already had to get the engine rebuild once.

Sharif@Forged 01-17-2010 09:43 PM

How much oil was it burning?

antman22 01-17-2010 10:09 PM

I've had my Z for about 3 weeks now, engine is broken in. I checked the oil just two days ago, and it looks like I still have plenty of oil. Its pretty close to the H on the dipstick, and I've definitely put the throttle down on a few occasions. I think there's a thread somewhere in the Engine section of the forums that discusses everyone's oil usage, some have been burning through oil a little faster than others.

One_Quick_Z 01-17-2010 10:13 PM

Wow that is not good! I think you deffinatly have an issue there.

Hope it all works out!

But that could have just been the dealership taking a precaution, dealership may have overreacted a bit in building or rebuilding the engine.

vipor 01-18-2010 08:48 AM

I find it hard to believe that a dealer would rebuild a motor and not just replace the short block. I find it hard to believe that most dealers would have the facilities to work on cranks and rings and shiz.

My motor burned about a 1/2 qt. in the first few thousand miles, but since then I've stayed at the high dot every time I've checked it. Zero burn-off.

drZ 01-18-2010 10:28 AM

had the same problem

hey i had the same problem a while back the motor blew out but nissan replaced the motor with no problems i tried to go the lemow law way out but didnt have a strong enough case GOOD LUCK :tiphat:

mick 01-18-2010 10:35 AM

wow. i better check my oil level. i have never checked it because the car has less than 400 miles and i didn't know some cars had this problem.

vipor 01-18-2010 10:58 AM

you're "supposed" to check your oil every time you refuel. i do it every 1k or so. i'm pretty confident in the fact that i have no burn off anymore so i just check it before trips and such.

Forrest 01-18-2010 11:29 AM

my last oil change i put 2800 miles and my engine consumed half its oil. I assumed it was becuase of the very cold weather and many cold starts. Right now in 500 miles i must go back to the dealer to do a oil consumption test but i suspect it wont be burning oil this time around.

Half its oil, or the dip stick was half way between the L & H mark? If it really burnt through 2.5 quarts of oil in 2800 miles I would be a little concerned.

You will burn through at least 1 quart of oil in the first 3000 miles with these motors. After that consumption should start to slow down to nearly nothing for typical driving. I went through 1 quart for 0-2200 miles, and 1/2 quart for 2200 to 5000 miles.

DooDooBrown 01-18-2010 12:17 PM

Mine has burnt through 2 quarts before every oil change. As of now, I have added 4 quarts since I have owned the car (8000 miles). Going to Nissan tommrow to get my oil change, and get an oil consumption test done...

dip stick was between L and H. I assumed that was half my oil amount. I am not concerned yet. I still think it was the freezing tempatures i been driving around in.

No, the dip stick doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the sump. Should only take approximately 1 quart to bring it from "halfway" to H.

wait.... i think your reading your dipstick wrong.

also are you actually measuring the amount you pull out of the car after an oil change? as in if i put in 5 liters and only get 3 out then your burning 2 liters.

i like to put the old oil back into the empty oil bottles. thats also a great way to know how much your actually getting back.

Forrest 01-18-2010 05:34 PM

all i know is after oil change it was on full, 2800 miles later its on half.

Yeah, in the 1950's. This is 60 years later. I think manufacturing tolerances are (ideally) a bit better now than then.

L means add oil
H means too much oil, and you should get some of it out.

The range (generally) represents a 1qt difference.

Oh I wasnt stressed. Like i said earlyer I didnt think it was burning just cold weather and cold starts.

I do have shifter rattle and have to get that fixed but i think thats a simple fix. Redline oil defintly made it smoother.

Come on guys this is the first post by Ryan and he just joined the forum two days ago plus he hasn't replied to anyone comments. Think about it, Nissan is not going to rebuild a brand new motor without first doing an extensive oil consumption test on the car first (he says nothing about that). Even on the 350's that had oil usages problems they didn't rebuild them, they replaced the motors. Close your mouths so the hook doesn't get deeper.

We've been :owned:

semtex 01-19-2010 03:32 PM

Oh c'mon. Do you really think someone would just stop by on this forum to see if he can get us riled up? I mean c'mon, man!!! :rofl2:

It varies. I burned 3 and a half quarts in under two thousand miles one time. And 2 quarts in under two thousand another time.

Sounds like you are having the same problem. My oil light never went on and the front end blew up and had to be rebuilt, even after that my oil was still burning and they put a new motor in and it is still burning oil. I am not talking about my dipstick being on L most of the time it was bone dry. I am talking with Nissan now on what to do. I will keep you posted.

My car has already had it's long block replaced at 8500 miles for high oil consumption. The new engine is no better it uses a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I am currently dealing with Nissan consumer affairs in hopes of getting a new vehicle. Can you imagine trying to sell this car with 3 engines having been in it. To add insult to injury my passenger side carpet gets wet after going thru a car wash since the motor replacement.

No,he doesn't.His dip stick was half way between the L & H mark, read your manual section 8.9 about checking engine oil level.
