Totalled my Z yesterday...what should I consider next?

I have always feared being hit in the rear in my Z and yesterday it happened. I saw the 21 year old female approaching me while I was stuck behind 3 cars turning left and I was a sitting duck. She never slowed down and hit me going about 40. Luckily, I am just a little sore but I'm ok. Surprisingly, my Z held up really well and took the impact from the Honda CR-V pretty well. I hit the X5 in front of me too, so both the rear and front ends are damaged. The rear is bad.

So, I'm in the market. I'm considering another Z, Nismo, Lexus RC F, Supra, BMW M's. I'd really like to stay under $35-40k if possible. I love Toyota products and believe they are superior to most, but the Supra price tag is a little crazy for what you get. I know many of you are enthusiast and know a lot about cars, so if you have any good opinions I'd love to hear them. Let me know and thanks for your help!

That sucks! And glad you made out ok! So at that price point, you might be able to find a new Nismo... definitely another Z. Otherwise you'll be looking at used for the most part. My preference is new... but that's just me.

Get yourself checked out pronto. When I got hit in the rear and my car totalled, I didn't know I had an issue until a couple days after. Then it was the common thought of will it go away. NOT!!!! 2 herniated disk and one neck surgery later I still have issues.

Just keep in mind that the new Supra is not a Toyota product. It is a BMW. If that doesn’t bother you then go for it. But if I was you and I wanted a BMW, I would just get an M2. But I’m not into zee German carz, so I would go for a nice Lexus RC. They are absolutely beautiful and they come with bulletproof reliability. You can’t go wrong!

Of course a newish Nismo is not too shabby either but I am a little biased....lol.

I'm a 2-seater/Manual Trans snob... so most likely I would just get another Z.

This is evidenced by my totalling of my '11 Sport and buying a '13 sport within 72 hours.

glad you're ok. that sucks. test drive them all and then find the best z you can afford. i was able to find a 2 year old z with 5k for me and a 2 year old mustang gt for my wife with only 1600 miles. saved about 10k off new on both.

gbrettin 01-24-2019 11:32 AM

I’d spring for the new Supra.

BlueDog007 01-24-2019 12:17 PM

I have a hard time spring for a $50-55k Supra that has less power than a Z. Even though I feel certain the Supra (Toyota/BMW) will be superior quality than a Nissan. Spending more for less power just doesn't make sense to me unless I'm missing something. And when are the Supra's even available? For $50-55k, I can buy a used Corvette Z06 which will smoke them all!

I have found a 2017 Nismo with 5k miles on it for $31k. Besides the body features, what are the biggest differences between a Nismo and a Sport package? My 2010 Z had the Fast Intentions exhaust, Stillen CAI, and a tune. Would I need those items on a Nismo or do they come standard? Also, the stereo system in my Z was AWFUL...is the Nismo system far superior? What other items are superior? The same dealer has a 2018 Sport Package with 7k miles for $24k.

Glad to hear and see that you are Ok. As far as looking for a new car, Let the dust settle first. Take your time in finding a replacement for the Z. There is a lot of cars out there. Just take your time.

The Supra probably won't be available for awhile + cost way more than it's valued for sometime after that until prices and stock setttle. Plus other reasons not to buy it..

Spring for a Z or Infiniti since they are similar if you want that familiarity . Lexus and Jags are nice too imo.

Glad to hear you are OK, but to get checked out. Seeing an accident about to happen might cause you to brace/stiffen for the impact.

When I think what I might get, the C7 vettes come to mind... might find a nice one use.

Stvee 01-24-2019 01:00 PM

I'd definitely be looking at a used M2 in that price range. The motor on the M2 makes like 380whp with a tune and exhaust. BMW's aren't nearly as unreliable as people like to say. They're just expensive if you can't do any of the work yourself and have to take it to a dealership for everything. Parts themselves aren't any worse than Nissan parts.

The most unreliable car I've had so far was a VQ40 Xterra and I've had a lot of cars that were supposedly unreliable. (2 M3's, 135i, GTI, Evo IX to name a few)

I would go for a newer Camaro. Plenty of power right out the gate and quite a few versions to pick from. Same with Mustang. At that price range you can get quite a car for little from the big domestic 3 these days. Glad you're ok man!

:iagree:

Both are solid choices at that price point.

I was rear ended in the summer and took my rear whe clean lff. The rays are bullet proof though.

Glad you are ok. As others mentioned do yourself a favor and get checked.

Next car? Heh... i got a 19' nismo in September a month later. Sat on a cheque for 2 weeks before saying "i need a sports car"

Options were a used m2 or the z. M2 i just couldnt swallow new they go for 90k and 2 years old with 40000km was asking 55k (wtf that depreciation)

I got my z otd on the road for substantially less msrp in terms of usd pricing.
