What RPM do you shift at?

Hey guyz,

Under normal driving conditions, what at what RPM do you shift to the next highest gear? I think i usually shift around 2200-2500rpm. When I engage the next gear, I'm at about 1,500rpm. Am I bogging the motor or am I OK?

vipor 12-14-2009 12:47 PM

the rev limiter doesn't kick in until 7.5k. push it MOAR!

semtex 12-14-2009 12:50 PM

I can't imagine shifting at such low rpms. This engine doesn't even come alive until 3000 rpm. But to answer your question, under normal conditions I shift at around 4500 rpm.

vipor 12-14-2009 12:51 PM

yeah i'll hit about 3500 unless it's really slow goin and i'm trying to keep quiet. 4500 or so on the highway.

(yay for a real answer)

3500 is a nice spot for the 1-2 upshift

Anything higher than 4000, I dunno, still in break-in. :driving:

vipor 12-14-2009 12:55 PM

i'm not! yay! i ride it like a 2 dollar whore!

theDreamer 12-14-2009 12:56 PM

I do just north of 3k when the car is just starting and warming up and then I prefer to be in the mid 4k range. Though most days I will do above 5k for a little while just because. :D

vipor 12-14-2009 12:57 PM

if you dont hit the 5200-5500 mark you never get to hear the VVEL kick in :shakes head:

shabarivas 12-14-2009 01:04 PM

right around 4 if im juts driving around casually - redline otherwise :)

Matt 12-14-2009 01:17 PM

Yikes! You guys have more guts than I do.

I'm past break-in, yet still shift at 3k-3.5k when I'm in "normal" driving mode. Usually 4.5k when I'm in "spirited" mode. 6k when I'm driving aggressively, which isn't often.

This is my daily driver, so I can only take so many 0-60 launches day in and day out.

I certainly wouldn't be shifting as low as you are though.

kenchan 12-14-2009 01:18 PM

for me 1-2 shift occurs around 4k RPM usually. the other shifts 2-3, 3-4, i think im around 3.5k range. i dont pay much attention.

you hear the vvel "kick in"? i thought it's always operational. and i never hear anything

Red370 12-14-2009 02:33 PM

damn, yall shift too high, im tryin to save gas here, I usually upshift at 2500 during normal driving conditions, if I shifted at 4k every time, i'd get 12mpg, no way buddy.

semtex 12-14-2009 02:39 PM

I bought a 370Z to enjoy it. If fuel economy was my priority, I would've bought something like a Versa. But whatever. Different strokes for different folks. FWIW, I get around 16mpg with regular shifting at around 4500 rpm, and that's acceptable to me.

vipor 12-14-2009 03:11 PM

With fairly all-around driving (good amounts of spirited and lazy driving, same with highway versus city driving), my Gas Cubby app has me a 16 fill ups and an overall average of 18.6 MPG.

AGREED except I tend to shift 5000-5500 RPM ;)

semtex 12-14-2009 03:19 PM

I've been pulled over 3 times in the last 2 months. My 4500 rpm shift point is a result of my deliberate efforts to break this pattern. Let me put it this way: I'm no stranger to the shift light.

I totally agree. I guess I can still get away with shifting a bit higher because of the quiet stock exhaust. Once I upgrade it with aftermarket, I will def calm down a little.

depends on how wide your throttle is at 4k. if you WOT each time to 4k you'll use up considerably more fuel, but i dont open it up that wide for normal acceleration. i like to be in torque band for the next gear, so that is part of the reason why i rev to 4k.

that said, i dont really keep track of mpg either. :p if you want to save fuel, get another car.

That's a good point and I agree completely. My throttle is open maybe 40% at most. It's not a WOT mad dash to that 4500 rpm mark. And being in the torque band is also why I shift where I do.

Actually I believe in Ohio a judge just ruled that you cannot base a ticket on sound level or aftermarket modifications. Meaning, "well the radar freaked out, but I knew he was speeding because of the sound of his exhaust." That does not hold up in court.

MeetJoeAsian 12-14-2009 03:45 PM

I don't rev high at all, but why is my gas mileage 14mpg??? hehehehe....

wow.. really? that's def not followed by State Troopers here because I got pulled over for accelerating TOO aggressively on an accelerating lane going into a big highway. The trooper was facing the opposite way but he heard my excessive "noise" while accelerating and pulled me over. He clearly told me it's the aggressive "accelerating NOISE" that distracted and led him to pull me over. I was going to ask him," If I can't accelerate FREELY on "acceleration lane", maybe they should rename it to "slowly get on to the highway lane"! lol.. but I kept my cool and didn't say anything.

Did he write you a ticket?
I am sure they can pull you over for whatever they damn please, but if he attempted to write me a ticket...well lets just say I would enjoy the justice system. :)

of course he didn't get a ticket, he told the officer he's not just a member of the370Z.com, he's also the president...

:bowrofl: Nicely DONE :tiphat:.

He told me that he CAN give me a ticket but he's going to let me go for this time (in my mind I'm saying, "WTF did I really do??). He did give me a $54 ticket (non moving violation) and a warning.

kenchan 12-14-2009 04:21 PM

another reason why my car is stock. :D

areyouin729 12-14-2009 04:25 PM

around 3500 and higher gears 4000+

tbonesteak 12-14-2009 04:27 PM

i shift at 2500-3000 normally, 4-5k when im feeling cuhhraaazeee. hahaha. This car has so much torque compared to my s2k that even shifting at 2500 feels crazy for me.

6spd 12-14-2009 04:50 PM

for me, usually around 4500 for 1st to second under normal circumstances, and then progressively lower as the gear gets higher. i did this from day one, driving exactly how i intend to drive the car for the duration of its life, and haven't burnt a drop of oil in almost 2k miles. i didn't rev higher than 6k~ish until i hit 1500 miles and just redlined for the first time last night in this car... omfg 3rd gear FTW!

feelzpwr91 12-14-2009 05:05 PM

normal shift for me is at 2800-3200 Rpm

bradz 12-14-2009 05:17 PM

I shift around 3 to 4k and still get 18.3mpg for city driving.

KillerBee370 12-14-2009 05:18 PM

Normal driving? 4K

hazzazi 12-14-2009 05:58 PM

i can't believe everyone is getting low mpg... cuz i usually drive a little hard (not crazy tho).. and my mpg says 22, and i do shift around 4k... i guess i'm just lucky... :driving:

edit: i do a lot of highway driving, that could be the reason :)

Smallywood 12-14-2009 06:05 PM

7.5 = normal driving conditions... I didn't buy my car to haul groceries...

:D

ZeeJay 12-14-2009 06:08 PM

3.5k to 4.5k city driving, you cant really hear your exhaust until around 4k and i like hearing it just a little bit over everything else.

If im doing launches, i shift around 7k....i still think im doing it wrong, my car smells bad after a pretty aggressive launch and i dont burn rubber too hard.

yea im in the same boat here. it usually says im at 22-24 mpg.
but as for shifting its around 4.5k

Zdom 12-14-2009 08:15 PM

With an automatic in manual mode, the computer won't let you shift at that low RPM.
