Oil Change for the 370Z

I took my Z for her first oil change and I could not believe it when they told me that the cost of the oil change was $110.00. How much did you people out there paid for this service and why so expensive.:bowrofl:

Dood! You live in LA! Hopefully the dealer is using Nissan Ester Oil ($12/qt) at that price.

My dealer offers free changes for life, but I'll never take advantage of that. Control your destiny by doing your own ($30 with a good synthetic and filter)

Matt 12-07-2009 12:11 PM

Nissan Ester Oil + charing you for removing the panel with 19+ screws and fasteners.

A local shop charges $20 if I bring the oil/filter.

Trips 12-07-2009 12:17 PM

Easy guys! it's his first post...
save some money and do it yourself or shop around to see if another dealer might give you a break.. you can use the search function, this has been discussed. :tiphat:

Matt 12-07-2009 12:21 PM

Hey, I wasn't harsh!

I just ordered Z1's oil change kit for the Z. That, plus the $20 labor my trusted repair shop is charging, it puts me almost the same amount as the dealership....but I know it's getting done right and hell, I can watch!

Avoiding my dealership at all costs!

GETU1 12-07-2009 01:20 PM

If you include my oil(Royal Purple) that I brought in, it's about $65.

Paul_S 12-07-2009 01:35 PM

I'm going to do my first 370Z oil change soon (thanks to AK for his great guide). I just need to decide what oil and filter to choose.

It's only 4 bolts to pull down the flap - you don't need to remove the entire bottom panel.

makes it a lot easier though. and usually helps you prevent a mess because you're not having to try as hard to get to anything.

PapoZalsa 12-07-2009 07:35 PM

The stealership offers me 2 free oil changes, I'll take my own Synthetic Oil and they can fork out the filter.

If not I take it over my friend's shop for a free Synthetic oil change he gave me when I had the 350.

NiņaBonitaZ 12-07-2009 08:59 PM

Pennzoil platinum= 20-25 dlls at Walmart
Mobil 1 filter = 11 dlls at Autozone
Changed by me in my garage with the help of Rhino 12000 ramps

engine runs just as quiet as with the overpriced NIssan ester oil mambo jumbo.

JakeZ34 12-07-2009 10:32 PM

buying this car already I knew the oil change was pricey so this is what I did, as a courtesy I asked the dealers to throw in a couple of free oil changes and they agreed so I am going to bring my car in at 1,500 to do a first oil change, and again at 3,000. That's two oil changes they said they'll do for me for free as courtesy. So after that I'll swap to full synthetic redline and do it myself from then on out. I don't need to pay $100+ dollars to do a job that takes about 30 min to an hour. It's simply not worth it and plus changing your own motor oil can be therapeutic if your an enthusiast :D

People here have great liking to Redline synthetic, as far as filters I like Mobil1 or K&N. Remember to follow AK's magnetic drain bolt and filtermag. It gives you an even more peace of mind knowing there is magnets holding on to all that metal shavings.

kenchan 12-07-2009 10:38 PM

im just going to use the factory filter and a jug of 5qt M1. $32?

JakeZ34 12-07-2009 10:44 PM

hey kenchen I read in a thread somewhere (I wish I remember) People cut open a factory nissan filter and found that it has the same cardboard set up as a Fram. Ever since I heard that I decided to use M1 or K&N.

zmyride 12-07-2009 10:48 PM

I dont know what you guys are talking about, but i talked to Nissan service manager today and he said an oil change is $39. He knows the Z is a V6, but he said it makes no difference.

Also i usually spend $50 for an oil change + tire rotation on my other cars. But you don't do tire rotation on a Z (I have no idea why not) but that's even better.

what makes you guys think oil change on a Z is over $100.

if they're using the Nissan Ester Oil it's over $100. If they're just putting regular 5w30 oil in there than it's $39, (Nissan Ester) is what they use in the GT-R's oil change. Correct me if I'm wrong.

why use ester oil if it's not called for? The Z is no GT-R. why use ester oil?

JakeZ34 12-07-2009 11:56 PM

for my understanding ester oil is best for cars. not an expert at this but see if some pros can chime in on this. I just know that ester is better than the regular. Not really sure why but probably because it's synthetic stuff and less friction I guess? com'on people chime in on this so I'm not here being clueless passing out unvarified info!

It was in AK370Z's excellent oil change thread. Here is the link from that.

Thanks for the advice :)

Nissan Ester Oil is recommended in the service manual, not required. Conventional wisdom says not to switch to synthetic until 3-5k miles, which leaves you with at least one oil change to take care of with a dino. As much as I paid for the car, I can make sure the first oil change right after break-in is considered "proper" by Nissan. I'll switch to a full synthetic at 3500 miles or so.

Whether or not you change to synthetic at 5 or 5000 miles, that's your choice. But the last thing I would do is use regular 5w30 included in the $39 oil change at the dealership (unless you're getting a discount off the $100 one).

Oil change threads are new and exciting.

If you want to put the wider tires on the front and the narrower ones on the rear, get back to us on how it behaves.

The guy you talk to is a dumb a$$, he doesnt know that the new Z requires a better oil. At least stick to a synthetic if you dont use the ester oil. My salesman didnt know that it was more when I bought my Z and he gave me a quote of $39 for my first change and when I brought it in the service rep had to talk to the sales people who then had to compensate for the extra $$$ to honor my quote, which was in writing.

Do you really think all the guys in this forum are wrong about this, with all the experience they bring?

Trips 12-08-2009 10:04 AM

I see this thread may lead to flamming?
Keep it Civil. lol

Zsteve 12-08-2009 10:09 AM

So Matt, when are you getting your first oil change done at that shop? Im waiting for you to go first so he can see how things are then Ill go. I will probably need my sexond change within a month, Im driving the hell out of this car.

vipor 12-08-2009 10:09 AM

Here's the thread on that: Don't Use Nissan OEM Oil Filters (Long Post - Lotsa Pics) - MyG37

Personally I've decided to use Purolators...

KillerBee370 12-08-2009 12:15 PM

I change my own for the cost of the mobil 1, a K&N filter and the drain plug washer. Don't forget yer magnets!

j.arnaldo 12-08-2009 12:28 PM

D.I.Y. 'Nuff said! BTW, the Pureone/Purolator advice is right on the nose. It's THE best oil filter out there! And it costs less than the
crappy OEM one.

so for ester oil, how often do you change the oil? do nissan dealers carry that or it has to be special order online?
