Ca state ref

Needed some info on ca state ref? Got one yesterday. I don't mind putting the stock stuff back on, but wanted to know if anyone has ever received one and if I can just pay a fine and leave the car as is?

wanker 05-02-2016 03:31 PM

It obviously depends on the issue. Is it a smog issue? An allegation that you modified or tampered with the emission? Or an exhaust that is too loud?

Candidly, you're probably SOL as the Z is a new car and any flagged issue will be due to aftermarket modifications.

Unless you mod'd the emissions in some other way, like, hi-flo cats., they shouldn't be able to hassle you for the G3 intakes...they are CARB legal. As long as you have the doc. & sticker.

I just passed smog myself recently...w/ G3 intakes, FI CBE, no problem

DEpointfive0 05-02-2016 04:34 PM

What mods you got in total? Might not need to revert anything

370Z JT 05-02-2016 05:13 PM

You got pulled over and the LEO asked you to pop the hood?

What city was this?

axmea? 05-02-2016 05:19 PM

Rumblefish where did you go?

Andrew - who did you go to?

Although I have 2 years to go, I am starting to do some research and fill my knowledge bank.

Aznjay83 05-02-2016 06:02 PM

Sorry for the delay, phone died. We were off the 101/topanga canyon headed to Malibu. I have full tomei, z1 intake manifold and lower manifold, z1 crank pulley and a tune. I'm just not sure if I can just pay a fine. Some people tell me they just paid a fine and left it, others say to turn back to stock and pay a fine.

You can pay a fine, but if you get reffed again, you can't just pay.

The fine is something like $500-600.

I'd not take any of the mods off and go for the ref. Fúck them. They can't see an upper or lower manifold...

i'd take off the test pipes, but other then than you have a carb LEGAL sticker for your intakes...

jaedub 05-02-2016 09:35 PM

State ref charges a bit over $100 just for testing. I got away with it through some loophole. Those guys are really anal about aftermarket parts. Got my visit to ref due to my CBE. I swapped it back to stock and had them waive it. CA is a b!tch

jaedub 05-02-2016 09:38 PM

And you wouldn't have to pay any fines if you swap it back to stock. It's basically a major fix it ticket. Just a $25 court fee and $100+ ref testing fee. Nothing else.

Just for having a CBE? How did that happen?

Where there's your issue. Test pipes are illegal in CA, period. You cannot remove, modify of alter your OEM catalytic converters.

Malm 05-03-2016 10:45 AM

California sucks... but then why are so many vendors located there?!! Open up shops in florida!

He didn't even see the test pipes only my gen 3 with the carb sticker, but reffed me amyways

Klcarp1 05-06-2016 02:20 PM

@aznjay83 did you install your test pipes yourself or did you find a shop to do it for you?

Shop did it

Klcarp1 05-06-2016 02:27 PM

Could you tell me what shop did the install? I have motordyne art pipes that I'm trying to get installed, but none of my local shops will touch them. Damn feds have them all scared straight

I got them done at unique in Rancho Cucamonga. If that's too far try 9k in Whittier

Haboob 05-06-2016 02:47 PM

Fuuuuuck that Nazi state.

Though, I don't know if I will pass emissions in AZ with my HFC's. Probably, but I'll probably get rid of the car before I even have to do emissions.

Cali sucks? Nowhere nearly as much as Fl.

That's probably why they don't open their shops there.

I'd just as soon lose a nut than ever go back to :icon14:ida

If you read the CA emission code, you can't modify exhaust for any reason even if is below 95 decibel. So yeah.....any aftermarket exhaust is illegal in CA.

I've run AM exhaust on just about every car I've ever owned and, I've never had a problem passing a smog check for having one. Even with AM headers.

Now, hi-flo cats? That's another story.

Passing the smog check has nothing to do with being legal. Once you swap any part of the exhaust with an aftermarket, it's illegal whether you pass the smog test or not.

Passing smog is the only thing that matters. Cats cant be modified but anything past them doesn't matter

Currently smogging my brothers supra, Failed the first time because the tech didn't understand that cars older then 1995 can have any air intake setup aslong as it keeps "emission controls", Failed second time because they made me wait over an hour and the cats were cold, Failed third because CEL came on. :(

Had to take off the methanol injection kit and add cats because california. My Z pulls harder than it now.

nis350 05-10-2016 02:29 AM

spoke with the tech from the star smog station and was told that they only inspect up to the cats for visual.

This is not true. Past the cats does not matter for smog.

:iagree: You can pass emissions, but fail the visual.

TerribleONE 05-10-2016 12:52 PM

I paid mine uncorrected. It was in the 700$ range. No issues since.

I am sorry to correct you, but a cat-back exhaust cannot cause a smog inspection failure -- even the visual.

I know this as fact and even verified this with my son who holds a CARB Smog License and performs smog checks for a living.
