Very curious about this product.

Given the nature of the new connectivity capabilities you're introducing into these cars, what steps have you guys taken in ensuring the security of these new connections?

There are two new remote entry points (close proximity and medium proximity) and one local entry point into the OBD system with this thing. With the cloud storage option, I imagine the architecture in this system would create the opportunity for remote access directly into the ECU.

brancky3 03-15-2016 02:49 PM

I believe they've said before that not just the top of the poll will get a kit created, but the top few.

layhum 03-15-2016 04:12 PM

Just voted! We down still to Gen. Boo!

We have a long history in security, encryption and authentication. Everything is password authenticated via encrypted communications.

Unfortunately Workshop 12 will not be able to secure funding to manufacture Brainiac units. At this point we will be cancelling all existing preoders for the product. To be clear there will be no charges against any orders and those who have preordered will be receiving email cancellation notices.

More information can be found here: https://workshoptwelve.com/2016/04/1...ange-of-plans/

This also means that we will unfortunately not be able to build out our dealer and distributor network as planned. You won't find anyone more disappointed than us about not being able to bring a packaged Brainiac solution to market. We want to thank everyone who supported us through this journey, your support has meant more to us than you'll ever know.

Sincerely,

Tim Neil and Rob Williams
Co-Founders of Workshop 12

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you.

Jayhovah 04-14-2016 10:15 AM

Such a bummer. =(

Nixin 04-14-2016 01:47 PM

That was an awesome unit. Doesn't any other company produce something similar to this?

radensb 06-20-2018 02:22 AM

Looks like the product is back for the non-Navi 370Z's:

I think i may get in on this!

It's not really "back" in the same form it was planned to be in originally... it's now an android launcher and the the preorder is for the plastic trim to fit a samsung tablet where the radio/cubby used to be.

I would be all over this except there is no good solution for bluetooth calling with a standalone android tablet as a headunit. That has thus far kept me from going tablet.

nismo-911 11-04-2018 10:47 PM

You guys do know that workshop 12 already made this happen. My order for the tab a trim had already shipped. Anyone else doing it, I need help with wiring. https://youtu.be/kHuycbT8rbI

mini_cal 11-05-2018 12:34 AM

Damn, that seems like a pretty steep price for just the unpainted plastics.

Then you have to buy the specific tablet, do the painting, gathering parts + wiring on top.

Seems like a lot for just a 10.1" screen... GPS and AM/FM won't be there too I'd assume since it is standalone. For those looking for a GPS antenna, you'd have to buy something similar to the Garmin GLO.

rey127 11-05-2018 02:31 AM

I would never want to be losing Bluetooth calls options either. However it's a nice feature to have otherwise. This is as per their YouTube comment not for navigation models in case people didn't notice.

2011 Nismo#91 11-05-2018 06:25 AM

Wouldn't a simple headphone/mic splitter solve this issue with a Bluetooth app on the tablet?

nismo-911 11-05-2018 10:08 AM

I dont use bluetooth on my car so i could careless. Also, i would rather use pandora and iheart radio for my streaming use. The tablet will always be hotspotted to my phone which has unlimited 4G. The problem I have is with wiring. Since im removing the factory head unit, where would my aux go for my tabet? I ordered a PAC transformer which was stated that its required if Im using my factory bose amplifier, but the PAC doesnt have an aux or audio input.

Note also that there is no solution for tablet battery overheating in warmer months. This will lead to charging issues and battery life. I asked them directly about this issue and they responded that "their customers are coming up with cooling solutions themselves." When asked if they will offer a cooling solution with the kit, they remarked that it is not within their scope.

I DIYed a 7 inch galaxy tablet to the end of the console cubby. The cubby in between the AC vents, I cut out the back park and mounted the tablet screen on there. Its been working fine for me for the past 2 years and I live in south florida.

I have my plastic (I'm only having the front done) being painted this week... for prep/paint my shop quoted me under $100, so for everything involved (tablet/plastics/electronics/paint) I'm right around the same price I originally paid for my Pioneer head unit.

Jayhovah - I don't know about your Z, but if I'm driving it's either speaker or exhaust noise. That, and I usually won't answer phone calls when I'm driving anyway so I wasn't concerned about either.

mini_cal - The Tablet A has a built-in GPS antenna, and if you tether it to your phone's data Waze and/or Google Maps work perfectly fine (I tested the theory in my minivan since I had the same concern in the beginning). Also, how often do you listen to AM/FM radio? Again, can only speak for myself but I haven't a single time since owning my Z but if you do, you do.

nismo-911 - They have a video on their youtube channel with wiring setup. I'm still waiting on my voltage power adapter otherwise I'd try to help you out myself but it looks pretty straight forward. If you already have an amp installed, then it should be extremely simple.

falsereality - Unless you live in Arizona or somewhere where it gets EXTREMELY hot, I don't see the heat being an issue. I have to leave my phone in the car when I'm at work due to the area I work in, however even during the summer it operates just fine when I go to lunch or home. I don't see the tablet being taxed that severely by just playing music or navigating to overheat. Also, with the tablet (as opposed to an actual head unit),there's a decent amount of space behind it for the air to circulate somewhat. Worst case, you have AC. That's my line of thought.

That being said, the issue I did have with it was the lack of a way to integrate my current rearveiw camera since we all know the Z has terrible rearward visibility and the zenki Nismo wing pretty much blocks what we do have. I ended up purchasing the OEM rearview in-mirror monitor/camera setup and will use that however it was pricey. Just something to be aware of for those that do have cameras in use with their aftermarket headunits.

So are you using a PAC transformer? And are you adding an external amplifier?

Yea, my only issue is it relies on my phone's signal. I often drive up north and there's not much good coverage in certain areas, and typically thats when I use GPS (cottage/campsites).

Yes I listen to the radio everyday haha.

I guess this application is not suitable for everyone.

NorthStyle 11-05-2018 04:12 PM

I already have an aftermarket setup with amplifier so I'm just using the 3.5mm to RCA cable with the ground loop isolator. My car didn't have the Bose system to begin with so no need for the PAC transformer.

Ahh... I see. If that's the case then yeah, this might not be the setup for you.

I really don’t understand them selling these as unpainted - they could have gotten them bulk painted and passed the savings onto the customers.

NecioVato 11-17-2018 09:27 PM

My question is how would this work if you have the technology package setup? I wanted a Nismo without the tech package but the price on my ride was just too good to pass up.

nismo-911 11-20-2018 05:31 PM

I just finished the install on mine. Im super happy with the install. Only gripe is im getting about 60-70% of max volume compared to the stock bose radio. Any suggestions? Im using the PAC ROEM-NIS2

The issue with that is they are 3D printed. They have a texture to them that needs to be sanded and smoothen out before applying paint. That took me a few hours to sand and paint and had to repeat the process to get a nice smooth finish.

Do you have any pics to share with the group? Also, how are you liking it overall - assuming you have the non-technology package on your Z?

Thanks in advance.
