Yep! Last year. We stayed at the motel in town and traveled to Fontana for the fun and games.

Spstone 04-25-2016 04:41 PM

What's the grocery store situation up there? I'm thinking with the space available in the Z to pack **** in the cooler and just buy food and ice once we arrive. I'm thinking next year I'll pass on the camping experience to save stuff I've got to pack.

There's a grocery store in Robbinsville, which is about 30 minutes from Fontana.

BobbyLight 04-25-2016 05:18 PM

I decided to come last minute. I have stayed at the hotel in robbinsville and the little tuskeegee motel 10 mins from fontana village. Also camped at turkey creek (think thats the name) campground my first year. The camping is a little much but have no choice this year. Staying at a sketchy little no-lights, no-electricity, no-staffed campground 6 miles down 28 from fontana village. I'll be bringing my gun lol.

Nixin 04-25-2016 05:38 PM

Are the 'duelling banjos' always playing in the background?

Rusty 04-25-2016 06:10 PM

There is a couple of places to buy stuff.

Stayed there last year. Not bad. If you come in late during the night. It's hard to find a parking spot close. They have towels at the desk that you can use to wash your car with.

zguynate 04-26-2016 08:12 AM

The closer it gets, the more excited I am. I'll be there from Wednesday to Tuesday. Odd I know, but Memphis370 is staying a couple of days later. Figured I'd stick around too.

Topeco Lounge or whatever has some really good pizza btw. Had some last year and definitely getting some again this year.

I can hear the annoyance in my wife's voice as I go over plans for the 100th time. I'm pretty fricken excited. To the veterans is there wash points there for the Saturday show? How rough is it getting access?

Car wash is a faucet with a "Y" adapter and two hoses, just below the main hall where the dinners are held.

Same type of setup on the side of the general store, further down the hill.

RE the driving:

The advisory signs, particularly the sub-30MPH signs, are not kidding. Here in Florida, advisory signs are useless. A "40 mph curve" can be taken at 70-mph, in a mini van, in the rain, through an oil slick, with corded 8yo tires...and you will get bored. << Florida

The advisory speed signs up there actually have information you can use.

Rusty 04-26-2016 06:15 PM

:iagree:

Last year, wife and I did the rally. :driving: Had a blast. :driving:  On some of those roads we was on. We came across U-TURNS and SWITCH BACKS. Alot of them. :driving: PAY ATTENTION to the road signs. 'cause it's a two lane road. You have people coming at you. Nothing like being in the wrong lane on a switch back and you're looking at the driver coming at you with the same speed, and he is doing the same thing

Yeap, like what gear to be in for the curve.

You all going to have to forgive me if you get stuck behind until I find a place to pull out. I haven't had a chance to really drive and push the car yet and will be having a lot of first date jitters the first couple runs.

do NOT feel pressured from the people behind you until you feel safe to wave them through.

drive at a pace you are comfortable at and do not feel the urge to push yourself beyond your capabilities.

turn on your 4 ways and get off to the shoulder or wave them through and slow down to let them pass more quickly.

stay safe!

Hello fellow North Carolinian :hello:

Cant be worse than harley riders! I won't be pushing it hard either like previous years. I just moved from 350 to 370 a week ago and it feels very different! In a good way. We can both get in the way with my bottom of the barrel all season tires and 74k mile original clutch!

old guy 04-27-2016 04:18 PM

How many runs does one usually go on?
Are the speed limits enforced?
Sounds like groups all go at once?
And my biggest question ... Are you still going if RAIN is predicted?

Spstone 04-27-2016 05:14 PM

I'll be there rain or shine. I plan on getting as many runs as Momma will tolerate.

I feel that I'm a more than adequate driver, but being unfamiliar with the car, and the fact that it will not have 3,500 miles on it I'm not pushing it. Pride and ego might get bumped a little bit when you have to pull over and let some one by, but it's a hell of lot cheaper than a wrecked car and medical bills. Plus 1 dude wrecking it because some one was impatient will certainly slow it down more then waiting for a safe place to let people pass.

I'll see you there Bobby, I'm still not sure if I'm going to roll up with the club I'm representing or alone yet, but hoping that due to the amount of Z volume I expect to be heading that way I'll find friends on the highway. Years ago I built and showed mini-trucks and half the fun of runs was the drive up and seeing every one else on the road.

Oh yeah, the speed limits are enforced. Be very careful or you will have a big fat ticket. Everyone goes at once. Harley riders, crotch rocket riders, Z's, GTR's, and anything in between. You'll get to see what the afternoon parade lap is like due to slow drivers.

old guy 04-27-2016 07:36 PM

I was reading some posts earlier in the year, that it's better to go early in the am to avoid a slow parade of cars. That has my name all over it!

I too was thinking l would probably end up seeing others on the road, on their way down. I'm starting to get a little geeked my self !!!

Spstone 04-27-2016 08:06 PM

I'm planning some day time runs to get a feel for it than sneaking out early in the AM for a little more spirited run.

did you go out during the actual event or was it before?

old guy 04-28-2016 07:40 AM

I'm courious as to how fast u were going vs speed limit & how much $
Did u get screwed cause u were from out of state?
Cash on the spot?

zguynate 04-28-2016 08:01 AM

ZdayZ survival guide

I got the ticket on a Saturday. So it was during the actual event. I got it on Hwy 28, the street between Fontana and the Dragon.

The ticket was for 70 in a 55. It was $238.

I was actually going faster than that in quick little spurts. I did kind of get screwed because I was out of state. Did I deserve a ticket? Yes. I was driving my *** off. But the reason I got screwed is because I could have went to court and beat it if it wasn't so far. He never actually clocked my speed. He just saw me drive by. He gave me 70 because 16+ mph over the posted speed limit is mandatory court. I would have easily won in court. But I didn't feel like taking off work and driving 7 hours away to fight it.

I had to pay the ticket online.

a lot got hit last year. must remember this is a public road with traffic and cops who know we are there every year.

if you want to enjoy the road and actually push on it best to go early. however with the size of the event now even the mornings get some back ups here and there but less or no cops.

Spstone 04-28-2016 08:39 AM

I'm sure the cops up there keep track of all the car events and build their budget off of tickets from it.
