Tommy Kaira?

I guess I don't get it, can someone please explain why people are spending $250+ for a shift knob

cooltoy 06-07-2015 07:36 PM

It has been discontinued, therefore it is rare and it's JDM, and it is a well designed weighted knob.

It's like asking why do people pay $4500 for an authentic Amuse kit.

enkei2k 06-07-2015 08:32 PM

The same reason why you would spend ~30-40k on a 370Z.

because the specter is a better knob.

Zbrah 06-07-2015 08:48 PM

Same reason I would gladly pay 300-400 for a Zele shift knob if it ever comes up for grab.

DOOMMONKEY777 06-07-2015 09:32 PM

I got one, love it.

mag_black 06-07-2015 11:26 PM

TK knob is rare, but not that rare as an ARC or TS oil cap. However, I think in a few years, it will be as rare.

Great JDM pieces. You can easily resell them, so why not shell out $250 for a knob?

I have mine for the turtle. Plus it has an excellent feel and perfect weight.

Austonian 06-08-2015 12:04 AM

:shakes head:I've been waitin for DE to take my money. It's like ordering a panda cub.

That's four date nights I'd have to give up.

Btw, DE offered me the TK knob but I know it would be a pia to take out the one I have now. It is pretty much stuck with the amount of red stuff I put in there. I do remember telling him, I'd rather spend my money on other parts though. It was a time when my diff bushings went squirt.

Then there's no reason other than " because you want to ". To each his own, your money so do what you like with it. OP, I don't get it either, but it's obvious that it's not meant for us to get.

Exactly. I'm also onboard the "I don't get it either" train. Who the hell is Tommy Kaira? Why is ANY shift knob not made from 14th century Spanish gold worth $250+? And if it's due to rarity, what does that mean mine's worth, since it's the only one in existence?:roflpuke2:

AntiVenom 06-08-2015 07:11 AM

Some people like rocking name brands...

I remember when I was a young buck asking my brother why he wore Tommy Hilfiger socks. He replied with some asinine comment about wearing whatever he wanted to because he could afford it. Didn't make sense when I was 14, doesn't make sense to me now.

There are definitely other quality, weighted, stylish shift knob options out there.

speedfreek 06-08-2015 08:28 AM

There are many different reasons one can associate as to why someone wants this particular shift knob.

But I believe the most direct answer is that said person who would pay the cost of ownership because they simply are a fan of Tommy Kaira's products and/or they like the way it makes them feel when they hold his knob.....ok I am going to stop there :wtf2:

JC-Nismo 06-08-2015 01:25 PM

" Hold his knob " .........Lmfao:)

LAVA 06-08-2015 01:49 PM

Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks it's ridiculous

kenchan 06-08-2015 02:15 PM

i think homedepot mods are pretty ridiculous even if they are cheap and universal.. leftover can be used for garden and shop. :ugh:

wyso 06-08-2015 02:37 PM

knob envy

I am thinking of trading in my Z, the turtle knob is a definite keeper. Perfect size, weight, and feel. If you ever used one, you would see. Its one of the most direct contact points you have with the car, stock one is terrible.

Austonian 06-08-2015 02:37 PM

people spend ridiculous amounts of money on high tops.

Zbrah 06-08-2015 02:37 PM

What I don't get is why it became an issue how people spend their money that you feel the need to create a thread for it. Jealous much? No one made a thread voicing their opinion on your Borla exhaust so why criticze someone over a shift knob?

kenchan 06-08-2015 03:02 PM

please someone criticize me for photoshopped parts..

TerribleONE 06-08-2015 03:18 PM

Turtle power!

kenchan 06-08-2015 03:22 PM

"challenging dream"

that sounds kinda challenging indeed.. :ugh:

To each his own. Spend your money how you like.

However, this question makes my blood boil (you know in the I am bored and want to argue on the internet sort of way). I don't know how much money you make or how much any person with a TK knob makes, but suffice it to say that at this point in life I make enough money to own a dozen TK knobs if it suited me (as I am sure many other people here could).

The assumption that the OP questioning the TK knob is some form of jealousy is absurd.

The original post, as I read it, was asking whether or not there was a reason, other than the exclusivity, or name recognition, that the TK knob is so highly sought after. I'd say most, if not all of us can agree that there are other knobs (including the fatboy TK knock-off knob) that will get you what you need in terms of a good shift knob, and save you some $$$. However, if you want TK, gotta be hellaJDM or whatever, then go for it; pay the premium.

I have and will continue to spend money on my car(s) in ways that won't make sense to any body but me. That is the beauty of modding cars.

If you're referring to me, where do I criticize anyone? Jealous, no buy whatever makes you happy, I could care less. I started the thread because I had a question

You had a question, I agree with you that. But your next post shows your true intention for the thread saying how you think it's ridiculous other people spent their money which prompted my response.

kenchan 06-08-2015 04:15 PM

the steering lock i bought is 2x the price and it sits useless in my truck cause it hasn't broken.

everyone jelly? :ugh:

kenchan 06-08-2015 04:17 PM

how about the one extra rear tire and wheel i have in the basement which costs 4x just waiting for a possible rainy day that may never come?

It's absurd to post your opinion in a thread before reading through all the posts.

And I'm really glad to hear you will continue to spend your money on your car(s) in a way that won't make sense to any body but you. Maybe OP can learn from your wise wisdom and stop thinking how ridiculous it is someone else spends his or her money on an expensive sex toy.

Austonian 06-08-2015 04:36 PM

Ridiculous is paying 2500 dollars to a lucy liu impersonator to flog you in Vegas. not like i've ever done that.

They're like $400 now, or I just sold one of the last few for $400+shipping a few hours ago
