No offense, but if bad gas mileage and extra tire wear are things that you are trying to avoid, then perhaps you are in the wrong car? I work the Z pretty hard on a daily basis. Much more so than just loading it up with an extra person. The extra weight and concerns you have aren't even on my radar. To each his own
