Oil Capacity between the dots on the dip stick
I was wondering if anyone knows the accurate capacity between the upper and lower dots on the oil dip stick.
During my recent oil change, I poured in about .75 quart of oil and that moved the mark from about half way to about 80% near the upper dot (I waited a couple of hours before checking). Based on that measurement, it appears that it is about 2 q. between the dots which I think it quite high? Another question is where do most of you fill the oil up to relative to the dots? I left mine at about 80% full. Thanks... |

Top dot... if we're gonna be specific about it.
but MORE is not ALWAYS better. Oil fill is an example of that. EDIT: should be about 1QT from bottom to top of dipstick.

Most dipsticks are "calibrated" so that there is about 1 quart/liter between the H and L marks.
I aim for about 75% "full" but some engines seem to like a little more or a little less. To sum it up: no hard and fast rules. Owner's Manuals sometimes have that info. Or, in this case, maybe the FSM.

That's way too low,be careful, your engine might seize!
I've always been told it's a quart in between the lines. And I don't recommend over filling it.

It made sense to be about 1 quart between the dots, but I think it is more than that based on my measurement.
I filled it around 80% full which is on the upper range of the dots. I don't want to over-fill it. Quote:

I keep mine topped off at the top dot all the time. Since I switched from Redline to Pennzoil Ultra the consumption dropped from 1.25 quarts/5K miles to about a half quart/5K miles so it's much easier to monitor. I don't know if the drop in oil consumption was coincidental with the change in brands, maybe it was because the engine had about 35K miles on it when I switched and was finally settling down but at least now I don't worry about the oil level dropping more than a few mm below the top dot before I see it and add a few ounces of oil.

1.25q/5k miles seems a bit excessive and was a good idea to keep the level at the upper dot just in case. .5q/5k miles is probably normal for our motors.
Just putting in 5q is probably not a bad idea as other poster suggested. Quote:
