They don't actually separate. They can but you only need to get the center pin out a 1/4-1/2 inch to "deflate" the rivet. Stick a small screwdriver blade (your fingernails may work) under the button in the center of the head and pry it out a little bit. Insert the rivet and push the button back in. Voila!
