Washer Mod

Just tried it for ***** and giggles. Is sounds nice. No rasp or clanky noises. Nice deep loud tone. Quiet at idle or lets say it doesn't lope like a drag car. When you get on it, it's pretty loud. Deep throaty loud. Not that bad from the inside either. This was a 45min drive around. Will see how it wears after awhile. Didn't use washers. Couldn't get the bolts apart enough to put the washers in. So I just stuck a little peice of pipe that was around the same size as 4 washers. The bolt is welded in place. Don't know if it's because its a Nismo exhaust or what. Overall it's a nice satisfying sound. And it's free and easy to do. No drone either. Not at any rpm. Took me 15min and I didn't have to back the car up on ramps. I was surprised how good it sounds. Not for sure but according to the butt dyno I think it lost a little bite on the low end. Gonna roll like this for awhile. :driving:

And you did what again?????????????????????????????????????

Ron 01-11-2011 02:39 AM

post a vid!! I'm curious lol

johnnydrama 01-11-2011 08:51 AM

I did this bc I was bored and curious while waiting for my FI exhaust... way too much drone and way too raspy. This is comin from someone who likes it pretty loud and isn't sensitive to drone. Keep in mind I also had FI HFC when I tried this out so that made it louder im sure. Anyways didn't care much for it at all but it is cheap and easy and I can understand how painful the stock nismo exhaust is to live with bc of its restrictiveness of the exhaust tone. Especially on a car that looks this bad ***. Just my 2 cents.

wheee! 01-11-2011 09:13 AM

***** and giggles aside, ..... get an exhaust system. Your Z deserves better!

Nismoracer 01-11-2011 11:05 AM

A video won't do the sound justice. And there are plenty on youtube punch up washer mod 370z. And it probably did drone with HFC and was even louder. But stock, uncorking the muffler made this car sound good, no drone. If this is how it's going to sound with a muffler delete, which i'm still not sure because it's a small gap now vs a straight through pipe. May be slightly louder??? Don't want it louder, it's perfect the way it sounds. And it's easy to do I can go back to normal in a snap. Less than 10 min 15 min. Hmm maybe i'll install some kind of exhaust cut out.

wheee! 01-11-2011 12:58 PM

Nismoracer 01-11-2011 02:51 PM

I know right but it sounds good with no drone. I want to get the aam short tails but don't know how loud it is in comparison to this. Can't be much louder right. A few people in here have done a muffler delete and they say it drones. But the washer mod doesn't drone. Well it's free and easy and who looks underneath a car anyways. :vuvuzela:

have AK update your handle to Nismoric0r

Nismoracer 01-11-2011 03:18 PM

Love the sound from the washer mod. Now I know what it sounds like in person. Pullin the trigger on doing a muffler delete at a muffler shop. Would get the aam short tail but it costs less at a muffler shop and I'll be able to use the Nismo tips. :driving:

lawlz same, just get a real exhaust before that falls off and ruins your car haha

Nismoracer 01-11-2011 06:13 PM

Too late did the muffler delete. Was excited went to same shop that I always have my exhausts done at. They weren't busy. And WTF. It's even louder, slight drone at lower rpm range. Sounds terrific from the outside but inside.... It's a little too loud. Gonna live with it for now but don't know how long. Slight vibrations too here and there. I can feel a little from the steering wheel and the seat. Crap I left the Nismo muffler there. I'll get it in the morning, hopefully it's still there. Sounds awesome but a little too loud. Not raspy at all, good deep tone but loud. :shakes head:

why did you need a shop to remove your muffler again?

Because he had the muffler removed AND pipes added in it's place.

Nismoracer 01-12-2011 02:37 PM

What he said. Aam short tails $389-$429 somthin like that, price at a muffler shop to run straight pipe using Nismo tips $265. Went back and they stuck a baffle in to lessen the loudness. Happy now. Sounds perfect. :happydance:

wheee! 01-12-2011 02:42 PM

Don't forget to add the hood scoop to finish off your performance mods! :stirthepot:

good to hear you got the baffle installed to get it toned down a little.

so you like it better than the washer mod, right?

Nismoracer 01-12-2011 02:51 PM

Of course. Did the washer mod because I was curious. You've seen the videos. Had to do it to see how it sounded in person. It's not like it takes alot of time or skill to do.

Sorry for being a newbie for this but what does it consist off ? I'd like to try :-)

MrJdmNismo 01-26-2011 07:21 PM

whats a washer mod

Ron 01-26-2011 08:16 PM

Its when u put a couple of washers to separate the muffler from the rest of the exhaust. Thus creating an exhaust leak, which will make the car sound louder. There's a couple of threads with pictures, do a search:tup:

wow i didnt even know about this... But wont it make it rasp like TEST PIPES???

Ron 01-26-2011 09:18 PM

Nop, no rasp. I tried it with two 5/16 washers on each bolt just out of curiousity. It actually sounds good but I did feel the lost in backpressure causing the car to rev faster but not go anywhere lol. I took them off as soon as the exhaust cooled down.

when you rev your nismo in neutral does it stop at 5,000rpm???

Ron 01-26-2011 09:53 PM

I don't rev mi nismo in neutral, but its normal for a 370z to limit revs at 5k on an unloaded engine to avoid causing damage

Rui Z 01-26-2011 09:55 PM

I did the washer mod last weekend with my BERK exhaust. Lots of drone and sounded like crap. Took the washers out immediately.

Ron 01-26-2011 09:57 PM

Yeah, if u have an aftermarket exhaust then there is no need for it in the first place

Ron 01-26-2011 10:00 PM

I wouldn't do it on an unloaded engine with 500miles on the clock, but thats just me

MrJdmNismo 01-26-2011 10:03 PM

no no yeah i understand what ur sayn bro for right now im just babying the car...
