redline is a class 5 ester based oil. it has a life of 3-4k miles only! royal purple is a synthetic oil class 4 with a life span of around 5-6k miles.

The heavy duty filters that are available locally are the:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance
- Short M1-108
- Long M1-110

K&N
- Short HP-1008
- Long HP-1010

The M1 uses synthetic fibers in the filtration layer, don't have any data on the construction of the K&N but the weight feels roughly the same as the M1 indicating a similar amount of filter media. They are both are about twice as heavy as the Puralator Pure One which is the top of the line paper based filter.

There are several videos on youtube that show various oil filters taken apart. None of them look like the Royal Purple one. I think Puralator has one that is made out of synthetics or mobil one, can't remember. As for the oil Royal Purple says 12k miles between oil changes. Mobil one has one that goes 15k miles. Less oil changes the better. If regular oil can go 7k+ miles, which alot of the oems are recommending on newer cars, I don't see why the synthetics can't go longer. Next time I do an oil change I may go with mobil one or catrol syntec and K&N filter simply because they are available anywhere and I don't have to order them.

DO NOT GO OVER 3k-4k miles on ESTER OILS!!!!!

royal puple you might squeeze 7-8k but thats pushing it.

do not wait 12-15k miles to change your oil.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but seems logical to place here.

Looks like M1 oil Filters are no longer champ labs. Rumor is, they are now made by same manufacturer as Purolator.

Just bought a couple and look cheaper. Has the spiral wound bypass valve vs Blue plastic/spring, a Pink anti-drain valve vs orange original. 8 small inlet holes vs 5 large. New can does look taller. (M1-108)

For those who are interested.

Why not use Amsoil? I use that in all my vehicles, even my 2006 Jeep which doesn't burn an oil by using Amsoil.
