I recommend everyone start watching Z Nation on Syfy. DJ Qualls is a hoot and the show better balances storyline, drama, and some offbeat laughs too.

Still love the comic, but the show has just about lost me.

The whole bat-to-skull-slaughter scene was silly -- it was PAINFULLY obvious they were going to stop before any main characters, making it pointless to have it set up that way. Also, there is no way that scrawny, unimposing and young wuss would be the leader in that scenario. I don't care if he can shoot laser beams out of his eyes or is the only one who is literate or both. Too much suspension of disbelief.

I haven't even started the series but i keep hearing that i would extremely disappointed if i started. I am reading on Volume 12 out of the .. what?, 26 that is out but seems to me i will not be starting it anytime soon. I am completely hooked on the graphic novels and looks like that is will my head will stay. But saying that, how often is it when the movie/series is better than the book/comic? ...... The first Kick-*** movie maybe, the second one was crap.

I have watched every episode since season one and still enjoy this show. Yea there are some corny things happening from time to time but still is a good series.

My only serious gripe with the comic series is that the original artwork was more stylized, and in my view, much better. But that was only the first few issues... the current artist is ok.

Also, the writer is a reasonably good story teller, but all the characters kind of have the same "voice" and foibles, so his range in characterization isn't very deep, but it really doesn't interfere with the story.

Now, not all storylines in the comic land, as with any series, but the comic is MUCH better at showing you how people lose their humanity without getting melodramatic, heavy handed, or corny about it. I'd highly recommend getting the first omnibus collection and seeing what you think.

Also, the Telltale Walking Dead game is generally quite good -- and, sad to say, usually better written than the AMC show.

Other gripes with the TV show: AMC is avoiding any really controversial scenes -- the rape of Michonne, her revenge on the Governor (all of which makes much more sense in the comic), the degree to which Rick slowly collapses into a leader of survivors, the murder of Rick's wife and baby.

However, credit where credit is due: AMC made the Governor much more complex and interesting than the comic did and somehow managed to find a an actor who could make Michonne feel believable rather than forced (she is a VERY "superhero-y" character if you think about it...). Can't wait to see how they handle Ezekiel...

And Abraham looks like a dude doing WD cosplay for a comic con...

All the goofy stuff (the tearful sending off of Carol, for example) is not part of the comic story. That's all just extra stuff AMC added in to ramp up the melodrama. Then there was a whole season devoted to dying from the flu. And another about being lost in the woods and finding oneself... say, while eating a tub of pudding on a rooftop or burning down a house to symbolize shared disgust with class differences... oookaaayy... pretty sappy.

I started joking with my friends that if Bob died I was out, but now that it's coming I'm actually really sad he's only got a few episodes (at best) left. Yeah he didn't offer much to the group (or the show in general) but we was just so happy all the time which is something you really don't see out of anyone else in the group.

It is nice to see them staying true to the comic book though, albeit with a different character.

Who gets eaten in the comic book version?

Jordo! 10-20-2014 07:48 PM

Okay... interestingly Kirkman got the writing credit -- I have mixed feelings on whether it was "better", but I am pleased they are simply doing the "Fear the Hunter" story arc.

The whole Terminus segueway could have been and should have been skipped, but here we are.

Does anyone know if Kirkman is going to be doing more of the writing (and if so why? Angry fans of comic? Shred of integrity?) or is it simply that this bit so close to the comic, he just took the full credit on the script?

A clue on his website was a claim that this season will follow the comic more closely than before (not a bad plan...), but I don't know what that really means...

Anyway, that Gareth dude (or whatever wuss boy's name is) is much more believable as the head "hunter" from the story (a small band of nuts) than the leader of a large group who runs a whole compound of violent cultists, so this should be okay... although this particular story arc isn't really THAT great (or especially important), its waaaaaaay better than the whole seasons devoted to dying of bird flu and wandering in the woods...

You already know how this story will end up if you were paying attention... I'll give you a hint: The "meal" has the last laugh ;)

Without giving away any spoilers, they are also doing a pretty good job of making the Abraham and co. side story seem believable -- better than in the comic IMO -- although I still think someone more Hulk Hogan-y would have made a better Abraham.

Oh well... hope they hurry up and bring on Negan and the Saviors!

Dale (older guy, boonie hat). Allegedly because Kirkman felt bad having so many terrible things happen to Herschel, they kind of swapped part of Dale and Herschel's story arcs/roles in the tv story. So... if everything had gone in keeping with the book, Herschel would have been outlived by Dale (I think...), Tyrese would have been killed by the Governor, not Herschel, and Dale would have been chomped on by the Hunters... but I think they changed the order of events too. I'm pretty sure the Hunter story was before the Woodbury arc, but I can't recall...

The short version is: Dumb Zombie Comic Different and Vastly Better than Dumb Zombie TV Show (with the possible exception of the first episode, first season, which was really good).

Whoops -- I think I may have misinterpreted your post (didn't read it carefully... sorry). So you are reading the comic? I think I thought you hadn't yet. Have you gone back to read the earlier stories or did you pick it up in the middle?

StLRedrider 10-20-2014 09:04 PM

I'm thinking something happened down in that basement to him, why else would he run off where he did and start tearing up. Maybe he did get injured by that under water walker and was hiding it from everyone and now that they are having him as dinner:stirthepot: idk that's what I was thinkin

Thats what I'm thinking too, he got bit or scratched and did not want to tell anybody. But the series has no real period of virus incubation....I mean they are all infected, but it takes a Biter to activate it or you die and then it activates. So if he got bit in the cellar, its a least a few hours before we see him in the woods crying about it. I thought you turned quicker than that....

Observation: The car that had Beth in it perhaps, had a cross on the back window...what does that mean? Is the preacher tied to this somehow?
