So heres my story on test driving a 5.0...
So after hearing all the hype on a 5.0 stang and like 7 or 8 people moving from 370's to 5.0's, I figured id have to see what all the hype was all about. At first I test drove a manual with brembo brake package and relatively fully loaded. Since im not the best at a manual, I couldnt get the full feel of the car. But I wasnt too thrilled with the interior and besides the power in a straight line, it didnt blow my socks off. And according to Steve, apparentlty there is a sports mode in the brembo package that the salesman didnt even know about. Fast forward to yesterday, where the salesman calls me up and says they got an auto 5.0 in. So since work is so slow and ive got to kill off 200 vacation hours before the end of august, I figured id drive back out there. It did not have the brembo brake package. I took the first turn out of the parking lot and the all season tires just skidded all over the place. I got on it pretty hard but with those crappy tires I couldnt get decent grip even in 85 degree weather. When I was cruising at 60, the salesman told me to get on it (and as some of you NOVA guys know, im a sloth when it comes to speed and he was getting frustrated I was going so slow) and it got up to 85 in no time at all. THAT was cool. Just as long as I wasnt taking fast turns it was fine. So in the end im MUCH happier with my 370 I have now. The engine note in the 5.0 sounds MUCH nicer compared to the 3.7. The 370 doesnt have near the power in a straight line like the 5.0 (obviously). I also didnt like how there was a lot more play in the steering wheel, but thats going to happen with a larger car. I told him to call me up if they got an auto Brembo package in, but even then Im not sure I could take a hit and trade in my 370 for a 5.0. Also considering how great you Mid-a 370 guys are, im not sure I would want to leave the comfort of decent people and move to an old american muscle car group, but nobody could be as bad as the M3 group..... |

Chris, owning a Mustang doesn't mean you have to leave our group. :D
I agree with a lot of your impressions. The sound and the power are impressive. I prefer the smaller Z's steering feel as well. I wouldn't want to take the trade-in hit either, and that is why I haven't done the swap myself. Plus, imo, the Z is gorgeous in comparison. That is subjective opinion only, and it's a shallow point, but it's part of why I like the Z. But Mustangs are awesome performers. They are faster cars for bargain dollar. |
The steering feel isn't related to the size of the car as much as it is Ford's decision to use the stupid EPAS system. It's all computer controlled so it kills a lot of the feedback. If they used a normal steering rack the 5.0 would feel close to the same.
However, steering feel changes quite a bit when you are in sport mode or select something other than Comfort. |
Yeah man I guess its different strokes for different folks. But unless they were going to give me what I owe on the 370, give me a better interest rate than what I have now, and take the mods off the 370 and put the stock ones back on, theres no way id get one. Not to mention, Id want it fully loaded with a glass roof and all. There is ONE in nevada with everything I want, but its 48 grand with taxes and itd cost like 1500-2000 to ship it. Itd be a cold day in hell before I spent 50 grand on a Mustang, much less ANY car unless it was a viper or GTR.
