I'm just a few hours into the tear down so far. Hoping to make some good progress over the weekend.

Edit:
Made a little progress this morning. Got the cats off among a few other things in the engine bay. Hit my first snag. One of the O2 sensors is seized up pretty good and I can't break it loose. I managed to get the other one off with some PB Blaster and a torch but no dice on this one. I've got it loaded up in the vise so I can get a better angle on it. Time for some turkey so I'll try again later on.

Edit 2:

Finally got that evil O2 sensor off. Took a lot of PB-B and a lot of fire but it finally gave in. Now I'm wrestling with the oil pan. Really hard to get that thing started... Oh and Uprev cable arrived today :D

Have fun! Super easy kit to install. You'll like it.

puckshaw 11-29-2013 05:40 PM

Little more progress today. Oil pan is off and surfaces are clean. That was a pain. Fuel injectors arrived so I'll be tackling that and the plugs tomorrow. So far, so good!

puckshaw 11-30-2013 09:18 PM

Got the injectors installed and GTR plugs in :) Ready for more parts to arrive. I'm going to change the rear diff fluid while I've got some free time.

Looking at the tracking number, the big box should be arriving on Wednesday.

That's correct. Looks like it'll be a busy weekend

Nice! Sub'd. Have fun :)

puckshaw 12-07-2013 06:35 PM

A bit more progress today. I've got the intake manifold tapped and back on, intercooler is mounted, oil pan spacer is on, oil lines are done (minus the turbo), and intercooler piping is basically all routed. The piping has been a struggle. Really tight working areas. I need to get about an inch or two of movement to make the last connection which is harder than it sounds.

Hope you get your refund from GTM though. Things do not look good for them.

Wow now that's service!!!! Wish I would have gone that route... I will be starting to remove my motor today and will post pics as well...

Great build dude!!!

puckshaw 12-09-2013 01:08 PM

Thanks guys :D The last couple parts arrived today. Won't be long now until I fire her up  This turbo is massive by the way lol

It sure is...T25 on the left (found on most TT kits), and BP's "smaller" (62mm) turbo on the right:

Big boy housings make big boy power! We did 496whp at 7.8psi on the S&R Performance kit, look forward to comparing the power delivery and power output between the two kits once our friend Puckshaw finishes his installation.

Looks good so far, great job tackling this project yourself!

Thanks,

I think S&R uses the V-band turbine housing though. Those are small (T3) housings...compared to this 1.15 a/r T4. IMO the T3 housings and the V-band are too small for the VQ37VHR, as they don't flow enough. I did a bunch of EBP testing, and know that the T4 is the only way to go, since these engines have a very high VE even at 7000rpm. That is a lot of exhaust gas you are trying to push through, so the housing has to be large.

Yep, it was a .82A/R v-band if I'm not mistaken(dont quote me on that). They work well on the 4cyl but yeah the VQ37 is a beast and I can certainly see a benefit from the larger turbine.

Making tiny bits of progress but time is very limited during the week. The engine bay is basically all buttoned up except for the tower bar. BOV is installed. Wiring is all cleaned up for the scavenge pump. Wastegates are prepped and ready to be installed. Turbo is clocked and ready to go in. Turbo manifold is on. By the way, torquing the manifold bolt on the driver's side next to the steering knuckle is a breeze if you use a crows foot from the top through the engine bay. Otherwise it's hard to get a socket flush on the head.

All that's left is the fuel pump and installing the turbo, wastegates, and remaining exhaust

Boosted Performance 12-11-2013 08:23 AM

I can't remember if I put this in the manual...but when you clock the turbo, remove the compressor cover completely and put a bit of engine oil on the large O-ring that seals the compressor cover to the back plate. It will make clocking the turbo easier when it is bolted to the manifold. When you are clocking it, all the turbine housing and compressor cover bolts will need to be loose. Once you have everything clocked, just snug up one bolt on each side (compressor and turbine). This will prevent things from rotating when you pull the turbo off to tighten the rest of the bolts.

Also, a bit of oil on the inside of the silicone coupler at the turbo compressor outlet will make things a lot easier. The new silicone couplers on new aluminium tubing can bit a bit difficult due to high friction. Oil will make things a lot easier.

Cool thanks for the tips  It was pretty easy to clock it on the workbench with just loosening the bolts but I won't complain if I can make it even easier ;)

Snuck in a little wrench time late last night and got the turbo mounted up. That was pretty tricky. Super tight fit in there. Should be able to spend some more time on it tonight. Hoping to fire it up tomorrow

puckshaw 12-13-2013 07:45 AM

Almost there! All that I have left is the fuel pump. Everything else is installed and buttoned up. I've gone over all my connections and zip tied everything out of the way. Won't have time to work on it until late tonight but should be able to finish it up :D

What fuel pump did you go with? I just upgraded the crappy walbro 255 that gtm sent me with a Aeromotive 11142.... 90psi instead of 40psi.. I may be wrong on the specs on the 255...

I forget which model it is but can check tonight. It's the standard 340lph pump that's included with the kit.

COSMO 12-13-2013 08:03 AM

Hey can you snap some pics of the piping under the car? Wanna see the turbo...

COSMO 12-13-2013 08:12 AM

Great job on the install, very clean. Us boosted guys need to plan a trip to the mountains......

carlitos_370z 12-13-2013 08:25 AM

I want boost :(

COSMO 12-13-2013 08:33 AM

Just researched it's the same one. Don't know why gtm wouldn't use the 340 since it's only a few dollars more.. Go figure..

I'll try tonight. I'm working under jack stands so it's hard to get far enough away from the bottom of the car to get decent pics.

I'll bite my tongue on saying anything about GTM. Not too happy with them right now.

340lph fuel pump and 750cc fuel injectors are standard on this kit. Everything on the kit is good for 600whp + right out of the box.

I have a couple pictures kicking around:

EDIT:

m3chhawk's picture really shows how high everything sits..I kow some may be concerned about clearance, but the entire kit sits above the front subframe.
