Uhhh...update?

boosted_mx5 05-15-2013 09:27 AM

I'll post some teaser pics later. I got a bit distracted when the exhaust and everything came and sorta stopped working on the wiring... Also I started summer classes so I don't have all day to work on it anymore

We have some little stuff like fuel pump upgrade is done, removed the window washer fluid tank, moved the power steering fluid tank and ran new hoses. Not much got done last weekend either as we had another Z stop by for some mods. Other than that though its been mostly just Boosted Mx5 doing some welding.

I added two picks. The one we were just testing turbo placement t and mounting and seeing what space and clearances we had. Its not in its final resting position but its close. Also this is with almost everything tucked now. Mind the hoses that's just temporary you won't see them when its done.

Totally forgot to post pictures. So here is all of one picture

We should have a lot more on Friday since I am off from work that day and we will both be working on the car then.

When you merge two banks together like this, you MUST use an exhaust flex coupler on one of the sides. Because (in this case) everything is rigid there is no room left for expansion/contraction due to heat cycling. Without a flex pipe the welds will crack no matter how good of a welder you are. The pressure in the exhaust pipes before the turbo in this case will be 2.5-3 times the boost pressure as well, that won't help things either.

Also, if you take my advice (and I hope you do), use the Vibrant turbo flex couplers (or simmilar). Do not use the flex couplers that have braiding on the inside. The coupler must be bellowed on the inside.

If the manifold/merge is not complete yet, and you do plan on doing the above...sorry, please ignore it.

Also, if yo are doing wastegate recirculation, same thing...install a flex coupler between the wastegate outlet and the down pipe. Same reaso as above.

Yeah I thought Cody ordered everything at once but he missed my order for the flex pipe and such. So I figured I'll just mock everything up then insert the flex pipe when I get it.

Thank you! :tiphat:

Ill have some moar pics soon

Edit pics are up.

Next EDIT:
For the record that isn't the exact turbo location we just simply placed it roughly where it was going for the sake of taking pictures. Also those blue hoses are being rerouted.

Down pipe and up pipe fitted and tac welded

MyKindaGuise 06-01-2013 01:02 PM

Quick update...It's been a busy week for the two of us due to work and school so progess isn't amazing or anything but...

-Up pipe is fully welded and test fitted to trubo mount.
-Oil pan and turbo is tapped
-Oil feed line was made and test fitted
-Driver side interior reinstalled
-Battery relocation cables were ran under interior
-Silicone coupler's arrived along with thermostatic plate and fittings for Oil Cooler
-Intake manifold put into AutoCAD for potential design
-Intake manifold reinstalled

Im sure I am missing something but its coming along nicely.

Cody, when you get a chance one day, would you be up for writing a review of the steps behind a battery relocation? I'm looking into doing this myself, and am curious about the parts and cable routing so I'd be interested in your write up, or if you felt so moved a DIY.

:tiphat:

You're gonna wrap that turbine and up pipe, right?

:)

Yeah I can do a DIY or just help you. I ran the wire on Friday. Literally took a few minutes. The whole thing cant take more than 1-1.5hours depending on amount of beers/motivation. Keep in mind I am running the stock battery so its a little large but...I Like the added weight and I like the look of my gutted hatch.

I'm planning on gutting my trunk as well once I have another car to put the sub box into, so that will lighten the rear end considerably compared to the front, so if I can shift some of that weight back to the rear, thats good. Probably won't be anytime soon, that's why there's no rush. But to have a DIY to reference when the time comes will be very helpful.

Some more progress shots for everyone. Finished up pipe, downpipe, intercooler mount.

Exhaust pieces are arriving next week so keep an eye out for those!

boosted_mx5 06-08-2013 02:56 PM

To update Cody's update here are some more things. Something shifted when I was welding (as stuff happens). So I spent all day Friday redoing stuff. I ended up only need to bump something about 1/2 and inch but this is life.

Also the battery stuff is really easy. The hardest part is the mounting. I made a bracket but IDK if I'm totally happy with it, might make something else.

Hopefully my machinist gets the MAF bungs knocked out for us real quick so we can get the intercooler piping done.

Slow and steady...Right?

dmhenderson 06-08-2013 04:03 PM

It should do quite well. Phunk, a forum vendor, has 22k miles on TT E85 setup @ 520whp with the same pump and injectors as I have. He is actually the one who recommended this setup to me. I wont know right away since Ecutek doesn't have map switching yet, I will be doing a 93oct tune first.

diddy535 06-11-2013 12:31 PM

Sub'd. Lookin good!

MyKindaGuise 06-13-2013 10:31 AM

Minor update. Placed a decent sized order at RT Tuning AGAIN for more parts.lol

1x Vibrant Performance Race Muffler
1x Vibrant Performance 12"x4" resonator
1x Vibrant Performance manual boost controller
1x Vibrant Performance 1.875" SS piping
1x Vibrant Performance 1.75" SS piping

Hopefully we will have the intercooler piping tig welded this weekend and maybe have the maf flanges cnc'd.

Kinda big update I guess.

Most of the exhaust is done. Very pleased with it for now. We will be changing it when I get my amuse bumper. Not going to say what it will look like but it will have a very distinct super car look. Also got the battery hooked up and we put it into accessory and didn't have any leaks or issues. Also plugged a lot of ports from out hose deletions. Mostly coolant lines and stuff.

Looks like a center exit exhaust? :excited:
