So, just to confirm: with the radiator and whatnot out of the way in the front, the strut tower bar gone, and supporting the engine somehow (hoist, or jacked from underneath), is it possible to install the engine mounts without really pulling the engine out of the car? Ditto for trans?
|
Oh one more thing I wanted to bug you about Spohn, since you have the same brake kit. No instructions on the pad clips, so I guessed in the rear (the front seems dead obvious). Is this the correct way to put in the rear pad clips (basically, pinched between the bridge bolt and the bottom of the caliper, bowed outwards between)?

Oh I have LTH in there already. I was just worried about there being some intrinsic reason you can't jack/hoist the engine a few inches to clear things enough to swap the mount, without doing other major work or completely removing.
|
That should work good. I used a transmission jack without the plate. But you have to use your head when doing to make sure it's secure. This is why Z1's instructions have you installing them with the motor already out.
|
I'm almost about to jump on the new GTM TT kit so if i do my headers will be up for sale. They will be a hot ticket here.
|
Are these the magical 350Z ones that aren't produced anymore?
|
Where did you jack the engine up from?
|
Underneath the car. On the passenger side I got a straight shot on the mount that bolts to the engine. On the driver side it was a portion of the timing cover/ and the engine block. I know that doesn't sound pleasing but you have a very very limited area. But for me it's nothing. I can take another pic Saturday. But it only took my dad and I 15 minutes after our gameplan.

I'd just think we'd wanna go fast, have everything unbolted already, get it up however high it needs to be, yank the stock one out, slap the new one in, lower it back down... |
For tight spots like that, a bottle jack or two (sitting on top of something else... stack of boards, etc..) might be ideal.

Awesome car, man. It is very nice and your hard work shows. Good luck with her.

If that's true and I'm understanding you correctly, then the clip would only make contact with the pad backplate near the middle, right by the bridge bolt? If so, then yeah, I could have it backwards.
|
under the bridge bolt and then the other end should have two little ears that stick into the tab holes on the left side of the caliper in the picture where those slots are.
|
Yeah, I'm definitely not in little holes on the right currently, just have the right-most ears laying against the backplates. With how high up those holes on the left are, though, the plate would only be making pad contact in the middle near the bridge bolt, if I'm understanding right?

Updates on Z1 Poly Motor Mounts & Transmission Mount
After some good driving on these mounts they are awesome. Mostly from the Transmission mounts. Did not realize how much slop was in the tranny area. Shifting transitions are so much smoother. Especially when turning. No flex at all. If anything I highly recommend the tranny bushing.
|
Nice, mine are in the mail (urethane engine/trans mounts) :) BTW I decided to just kill the brake pad clips. I emailed Jim @ Stillen about the clips and about whether to lube anything in there, and his answer boiled down to, paraphrased: "that stuff's all about NVH. If you don't care about NVH, don't bother putting in the clips and don't bother with brake parts lube on the pad backplate either (or anywhere)."

Great track day today with Mike, Z1 guys, and some new friends. Learned a lot more about my car. Soon enough ill be where I want to to really push this bad boy to its limits.
This small track had a record of 1 minute flat. I was running 1:08 on street tires. So I was pretty thrilled for being my first time there. Then I get home and my RJM clutch was here. Can't wait to get it installed. |
It has begun. Got a great deal on this from a great guy.

RJM Clutch Pedal
Got this installed today. Pretty easy for myself being I have no interior.:icon17: It's still a little tight but managable. It takes several different adjustments to get it right. But when you do it is awsome feel. Just having the clutch engagement point so now instead of up high is a blessing. I love the fact as soon as I go to lift my foot the car is moving.

Is there less lateral flex (side to side) than the stock unit? I'm fairly sure that's how I killed my first master cylinder...

The stock one will move a good +/- 1/4 to 3/8ths of an inch at least. That can be really hard on the master cylinder. |

Nice!

Are you going to install everything at the same time?
