I would do gloss black (murder to keep clean) but would make all of those pretty parts pop even more. Chip Foose uses this method on almost all of his designs and I love it.

Removed the Adaptronic ECU little bit of wiring to be removed then previous engine and other stuff will be shipped ti California Dropped the new engine in to have some measurements for exhaust manifold and custom mounts http://imageshack.us/a/img195/9081/dscn0308kf.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img690/5585/dscn0297aj.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img195/9137/dscn0296un.jpg Sits way back and intake might touch the hood http://imageshack.us/a/img248/8116/dscn0298w.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img854/343/dscn0301x.jpg Gearshifter braket needs goood 4-5" of cutting to come in place of stock hole as well. http://imageshack.us/a/img33/7291/dscn0300pg.jpg Crossmember is touching the crank case but will move the engine down another 3-4". Will alter the cross member might make a new one and move the radiator close to engine along with AC condenser and Oil cooler. Intercooler will be in same place as before might be longer pipes but wont be close to hot oil cooler. http://imageshack.us/a/img195/9278/dscn0304ro.jpg Parts already ordered will be here in a week's time 1. Griffin Double Pass Radaitor 19" X 24" 2. 16" Flex-a-Lite high majic 3300 CFM puller fan with shroud would need some shroud work, going with single big fan then twins as last time. 3. JWT clutch and flywheel combo 4. Moshimoto Intercooler 5. Moshimoto Coolant reserviour tank Also converting to power steering as feeling wise stock wasnt that good and crossmember is in works so would be easier to do now. so got these 1. Used 2000 Subaru forester steering rack 2. New outer tie rod ends for 1998 subaru legacy/impreza 3. 84 toyota celica inner tie rod ends 4. Whiteline steering rach & Pinion mount bushes 5. Energy suspension stock steering rack bushes 6. Moshimoto Power steering bottle ;) There is a DIY to install subaru forester steering rack using celica inner and legacy outer tie rod ends, lets see how it goes. |
It just keeps getting better!

Working on the engine mounts, cross member had to be dissected quiet a lot, will reinforce it with steel sheets where the line is, which will be done once new forester steering rack reaches here on Thursday. Might need to relocate the oil filter as well. http://imageshack.us/a/img705/2967/a...3060401734.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img844/5031/dscn0314o.jpg Took a rollcage style pipe 1.5" will use it as new cross member welded to two plates which will lie on stock chassis rails, as we can weld anything on the chassis so will drill the rails and install steel tube to hold the bolts might put less stress on the rails. Mounts will be using stock for VQ35DE from 350Z, so far spacing seems tight but manageable http://imageshack.us/a/img546/5623/dscn0315wg.jpg Main issue which was worried about was exhaust manifold with the turbo so that fits without touching the chassis rails but still engine is more on right side then left so some small alternation might be needed. There is same plate with two holes and some provision is left to move engine front and back incase its needed http://imageshack.us/a/img823/471/dscn0312e.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img844/1314/dscn0313u.jpg For gear shifter might need some cutting as well where the red circle is marked but it will be done in the end. http://imageshack.us/a/img600/9486/dscn0316dc.jpg |

Got the parts and work is moving as well

man doc.... each time i walk in here.... it keeps getting better.....
|
Sorry couldn't post updates but there has been some progress, installing this engine sure is difficult
We managed to get a custom cross member done for the engine now its in final shape and been tested already, with stock 350Z mounts http://imageshack.us/a/img843/9959/0q02.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img197/291/ler9.jpg With mounts on http://imageshack.us/a/img850/6591/7rt0.jpg Installed the covers to see some space and test the mounts http://imageshack.us/a/img405/5720/ekfh.jpg Drilled holes as will keep screws to hold the mount to avoid any registration issues http://imageshack.us/a/img834/5700/45a3.jpg AC compressor blocking stock steering rack http://imageshack.us/a/img801/6119/q195.jpg Turbo might touch/melt the steering coupler but it will be removed with new rack http://imageshack.us/a/img59/8165/3gzv.jpg Height without upper intake manifold seems ok http://imageshack.us/a/img545/8048/87qc.jpg New Steering cross member, clamps to hold the suby steering is not not finalized will use stock rubber bushes. Its basically will move the rack almost half an inch forward but gives good space for crankcase http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7098/8crn.jpg So with suby steering at least keeping AC compressor with a VQ engine seems to be solved there is around 3/4th of an inch gap and can be moved futher with adding another joint. http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/4747/aeow.jpg http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/5071/mzau.jpg Height might be an issue need some shaving of intake manifold http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9897/sb9l.jpg Once steering rod is done will remove both cross members get those properly welded then grinding some epoxy primer and get it powder coated moving to exhaust manifold and fitting other parts. |
Moving along
Cross members are done with finished. Grinding was done then rust proofed then painted matte black, looks much better Engine one http://imageshack.us/a/img835/4539/17d6.jpg Steering cross-member, still needs to be installed and checked for measurements http://imageshack.us/a/img823/3250/17mo.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img543/3995/ovov.jpg Gearbox mount http://imageshack.us/a/img822/8002/7yyt.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img109/7737/biy1.jpg Will be using 350z auto transmission mount bushes http://imageshack.us/a/img402/1989/6yl7.jpg Shortening of the gearbox is done as well, got almost 4 inches or more out http://imageshack.us/a/img706/4935/7ps0.jpg Cut and weld http://imageshack.us/a/img23/2703/thba.jpg Sent the car to get engine bay painted black |
Got the engine cleaned up bought some Duplicolor cans for final finish, Used a gray colour on engine block
http://www.frederickbecker.com/How_T...r_Aluminum.JPG The block was properly cleaned inside out then sprayed all areas, some buff is there which will be cleaned up and also paint on some bolts but just wanted a cleaner look. Picture were taken from a cell phone so quality looks bad but in person looks really clean and with red covers would look sick http://imageshack.com/a/img706/4558/8kpq.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img189/7348/k8py.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img850/3376/yg9l.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img40/397/6q7c.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img585/1871/91zn.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img841/7885/wctn.jpg |
Finally dropped the engine in and start putting things back together, intake clearance is not that good touching the hood a bit will send middle and lower intake manifold part for some shaving
http://imageshack.us/a/img585/6738/mkf9.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img10/1011/sznj.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img191/7116/sk8h.jpg http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7299/hqdw.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img580/8305/3iw4.jpg |
Just read through this whole thread. WOW, the car's really come a long way. Looking forward to more!

Finally managed to get the power steering rack done, it was really a PIA to get this going, now added some U joints and removed the stock coupler near firewall, angle seems to be steep but as of now turning it right. We managed to add a bearing through which the rod goes next to the engine and its mounted in the chassis rail from bottom and a bracket on the side so avoiding any movement of rod in any direction. http://imageshack.us/a/img703/2923/ej53.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img585/4492/qlld.jpg |
Almost done engine and gear part and also he steering rack, just finalizing all things then to install radiator and intercooler

Crazy how much work is needed to use a V6 in that car. Guess the pushrod V8's people like to drop in are narrow enough that you don't have to monkey with the steering linkage as much.
I'd probably have stuck with the RB engine, but I'm probably biased since I'm building one for a S14 right now. :P |

RB was damn good engine but 250lb weight saving ifs huge in engine bay and specially its more of a mid engine ship now. Maybe in S14 and other cars you dont feel that much nose dive but in Z it was quiet a lot, on top of that reliability is more with VQ I guess lets see how it drives fingers crossed. |
when u started the VQ swap i was all against it.. but i was sure that u had a point of view..
now i understood why u went with the VQ. a wise decision. more particular less wight. but again, if am were you i would choose SR20DET.. coz its weight less than the RB and it can hold up to 350+HP with stock internals, installation will be much easier. and the engine is shorter than the RB, so weight distribution is better. I really enjoy browsing your builds bro.. and cant wait to see the result. |

Coming to power running everything stock, its gives 300hp on 2-3 psi boost and goes upto 380 on 11-12psi max you can go on stock turbo is around 14 only. Have seen some built pushing upto 550WHP with only upgrading the turbo rest stock block so future potential is there if needed which honestly I doubt will go that route on this car. As previous wheels offsets with fender flares was not pretty aggressive had to run big spacers so I did sell those in Feb and ordered a similar set with aggressive offsets and custom bronze lip through Ravspec. finally after 5 months these reach Dubai yesterday. Work CR01 15 X 9 - 28 and 15 x 10 -28, with custom bronze anodized lip, Sorry for crappy phone pics but these look so sick in person at times you dont want them to put on the car and make these dirty lol http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/191/zitj.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/405/iuhp.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/22/8lw9.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/832/3aur.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/6/j1hj.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/690/shgz.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/21/7gjn.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/59/5h0i.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/198/chnd.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/medium/821/zai2.jpg Unfortunately wont be installing these at the moment as Z got sponsored from Atara Racing and they sent their wheels more like Watanabe Reps with square setup 15 x 10.5 -32 and those also reached yesterday what a timing :), Once car is all done and running again thee CR01 will go on the car. Z at the moment getting radiator custom brackets and intercooler piping done will post some updates in coming days. |
This will always be an inspiration, I hope to one day snag an old Z and do some similar work to it.

There is some more progress
Got the flexalite fan mounted on the griffin radiator with custom mounts http://s22.postimg.org/f11sawfc1/IMG_2073.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/efctesk9t/IMG_2074.jpg In the car, closed the stock radiator holes will make new ones from the sides for flush fan fitment http://s22.postimg.org/a3o7psdcx/IMG_2075.jpg Intercooler, AC condensor and fan http://s22.postimg.org/nymi897s1/IMG_2079.jpg Intercooler needed custom pipes welded to come in the engine bay because of odd stock holes http://s17.postimg.org/ikarym85b/IMG_2160.jpg All radiator, concdoesor and interocooler mounted http://s17.postimg.org/jy2etx7en/IMG_2162.jpg Custom intake and IC piping welded and polished :) http://s17.postimg.org/v07hsd1hb/IMG_2291.jpg Courtesy of Atara Racing and Carbonsignal their agent locally for sponsoring my car, got my wheels 15 X 10.5 -32 square setup in bronze looks really good with huge lip there and weight also around 15lb each wheel will use these for a while then might switch to WORK http://s15.postimg.org/9sjtdahzf/IMG_2199.jpg http://s15.postimg.org/zcm3jq3d7/IMG_2200.jpg Some tire stretching going on 225/60/15 http://s24.postimg.org/4lhdd84qt/IMG_2137.jpg http://s24.postimg.org/jrnf45urp/IMG_2139.jpg http://s24.postimg.org/fmh3vzmdh/IMG_2145.jpg That is poking but wide fender flares will take care of that http://s24.postimg.org/jg5yreebp/IMG_2167.jpg found them a bit high so changed the tires to 205/60/15, more pics later in few days |
|
Was with you up until i saw that wheel/tire combo.
A 225 was bad enough... a 205 on a 10.5 inch wheel is even more sickeningly stretched, really ruins the car IMO. |
Congrats on picking up the sponsor you deserve it brother. Now lets run away together.....Lol with our cars of course.

man you have a great car!!!! nice project!!!
|
Im almost reaching there, weather isint great to go and stay at the shops and so is the place small roadside places.
Guy did a decent job on the intercooler pipes and mounting brackets, some pipes got some scratches he will get those polished those again. Made an aluminium radiator cooling plate seems a bit big but will make changes later if needed, good thing is looks a bit cleaner as the whole space is closed from front grill to the radiator, can polish or powder coat it or maybe wrapped in CF Do you guys suggest to make some holes or slits in it as was worried if air will pull it up while driving http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/21/vkpm.jpg Piping seems to be good, MAF sensor is near the intake pipe long with BOV, only thing which im not that feeling is the pipe for ar filter which goes across the other side but there was no space on the other side. http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/706/t6lf.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/28/at3a.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/713/lhbp.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/838/kxk9.jpg Got the new tires mounted will be installed today http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/833/30mw.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/593/k903.jpg |
nice job!!! want to see those rims in the car lol!!1
|
Was away for a small vacation dropped the car earlier around two weeks back for wiring job as lots of body wires were there from old engine and stock ones wanted to clean up everything. for your query will check today. Also sent the dashboard to get it wrapped in leather and alcantara along with the side boards as cracks were appearing again because of the heat here.
Transmission mount is blocking the down pipe might need to be altered again once car is done, this gearbox is really big for the tunnel http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/40/2ikj.jpg Dowpipe flange custom made because of space http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/513/9pmk.jpg Few pics of mounts and tie rod ends custom done to move the steering rack http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/29/5dxt.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/208/kbvw.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/62/r31q.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/801/2j14.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/822/52v4.jpg Removed the dashboard and its a wiring chaos back there http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/7/d35u.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/407/at7j.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/208/wv5z.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/802/6nm3.jpg http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/38/w3i.JPG http://imageshack.com/scaled/1024x768/822/pzwy.jpg But now after hooking up everything car is not starting :( seems like NATS issue, havent gone to the shop and check it not sure what to do for NATS as I thought VQ30DET comes without NATS earlier ones and have no idea how to resolve it without going for stand alone as thats the last thing I want to do, maybe will check with UPREV people as on VQ35DE/37 you can remove NATS with uprev. All I have is the harness and ecu and I doubt I can find a gloria or CIMA here to get other parts required? Any suggestions |
welcome back.. seems like you had fun in Turkey!!
really no way i can give you a suggestion but i think it something have to do with the harness  |
Quote:
I ditched the harness issue and went with Adaptronic standalone ecu, they are plugging the wiring and we might try to tune it over the weekend if all goes well. |
Glad you decided on a stand alone it will be better in the long run I think. I love those new wheels mounted, so retro.
|
Lots have happened engine didn't start first then plugged up a standalone ecu even then had issues came to find out block was faulty with oil lines clogged got a new engine and changed the block got headwork done and now all set to go, engine ran on basemap need a tune planning for this weekend
http://imageshack.com/a/img29/3607/h71h.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img593/4368/j8iy.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img13/527/z4oz.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img842/4126/2jp3.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img43/6701/0jtd.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img513/9024/em0r.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img577/8980/tswp.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img706/7048/3sig.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img707/9290/3zy6.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img23/9059/ep26.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img34/5351/puar.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img32/6426/24hz.jpg |
looks great dude!!! take a video for us ;)
|
Not a good news, steering rack/AC compressor not working with a VQ, lack of space there, Z has been standing for a while last try at some workshop if works out then ok else might change the engine.
