Need. Flywheel. Update.
:) |
This week, promise !
|
Any more news on the clutch/flywheel, LSD, and front control arms?
|
unfortunately not yet... I am scheduled to pick up the car tomorrow, but my shop hit a snag as the alignment machine wasn't working properly... but I think we're still on track for tomorrow... after I drive it home, I will post here on first impressions! then another update over weekend perhaps with video
|
Can't wait!

Clutch, flywheel, roller bearning bushing and clutch line installed...more on this tomorrow. SPC controls arms measured perfectly. I was able to adjust caster and camber. The adjustment however is not easy. |
Thanks for the update!
|
Thanks for update, Robert. See you tomorrow ! :)

I'm going to provide a quick update for you all, with more details to come this weekend... just picked up the car and drove home from redline... my impressions are based on 30 min drive home and no time yet to drive aggressively, skid pad test or anything
- jwt clutch... this feels better than stock! not harsh AT ALL... I have no idea how it will hold up over the long term, but I would vote that these cars come out of the factory with a jwt clutch... the overall pedal throw is much shorter now, and the engagement points are exactly where I like them... bonus: you know how on the stuck clutch when you press it in from first to second and you get a springy noise ? well, that's gone now! (EDIT/UPDATE... MOSTLY GONE! NOT COMPLETELY GONE) - flywheel... as you might imagine, the car revs much faster now, both accel and decel... most noticeable when you really stab the accelerator, or when drop from very high rpms... in fact, while getting used to the car driving home, I missed an upshift while on it hard and in between gears I was blown away by how quickly it shot up to redline... as predicted, SRM works FLAWLESSLY with the new clutch! big bonus for the street, while coasting in gear, you can now let off the accelerator rapidly and the car will smoothly begin to decelerate - none of the jerkiness with the stock setup ! it is actually very fluid and nice ! the only downside i've noticed is that as expected with this light weight flywheel, the car at idle exhibits a few rattling noises... nothing horrible, but you can hear it inside and outside the car... yes, I will capture video/audio - b&m shifter... this is a great add ! couldn't be happier ! i feel as though i have a better sense for which gear i'm in, because the shifter results in much less compliance and so when you reach down you know exactly where the lever should be for that gear and there it is... with the stock setup, i would sometimes hesitate or 2nd guess which gear i was in because of the slop/compliance... I love the short throws too ! reminds me of a formula ford i recently drove... great add for any application street/track/drag - carbonetic rear dif... going to take some real driving for me to evaluate this ! sorry, not ready to issue a verdict here yet... i can tell you that redline tested it out and said it was very aggressive and the car will now step out instantaneously but predictably with enough throttle... give me some more time and i'll share more thoughts on it... real test will be going into and out of corners at the limit on next track day... not surprisingly, the rear does exhibit some noises now that it didn't before Next up will be a customer oil cooler modification and custom rear diff cooler setup... Redline is working both of those for me, and I think you guys will be interested... Also getting the spa oil pressure / water temp gauge in next week... more to come! SUPER BIG THANKS TO REDLINE MOTORSPORTS FOR HELPING ME BLAZE THIS TRAIL ! NICE WORK ROBERT AND TEAM !! |
Sweet! Thanks for the update. I want to see action video!
Should sound really racey. :-) |
Very nice! I loved the JWT clutch in my 350Z. It will last a long time too. I put 550wtq through that JWT clutch and 2 years of track duty and it was still holding strong. Only reason I switched it out was because we were adding another 200 ft. lbs. and needed a tripple carbon for that kind of power.
|
Sounds great Travis. Now get it to the track!
|
Next track day is 6/13, on a tight twisty 1.2 mile track... should be REAL FUN ! :)
Continuing with my update... - bc racing er series... very tight car now ! I really cannot comment in detail yet because I haven't put the car through any serious lateral g's, but I can say that the car is still very streetable... to be clear, it is no longer a car that your non-enthusiast spouse (trying not to say wife !) is going to want to drive regularly or go on long trips in, but it is by no means a back breaker... no creaks or clanks, so it all seems to be holding together well... Redline did a great job (in a hurry!) setting up the car for me... I couldn't be more pleased with the stance... I'll get pictures up asap... the front is about the same height as DDM's, with the back just a hair higher - underdrive pulley!!! not sure what to say about this... it's in ! traqmate and chasecam are setup and installed now! i'm going to go for a spin and see if i can capture some night driving! standby by the way, thanks again to Robert at Redline Motorsports of Tempe, Arizona !.. and Sharif at Forged Performance for expediting the carbonetic LSD, and his words of wisdom ! and Mike at DDM for all the other parts and guidance ! best vendors on the board, guys ! |
A few pics of the new stance! look fwd to getting my forgestars!

Great setup Travis.
What made you decide on Chasecam vs MaxQ? |
My sense is that maxq, being pc-windows based, will get better over time... and it has the benefit of allowing you to run other windows-based apps on the netbook... but the overall output of the chasecam/traqmate looks better to me, it is simpler to setup and operate, no BSODs!, they are known for great support/warranty, and widely recommended.
if you're familiar with the maxq, would welcome your counterpoints so folks can hear both viewpoints... it prob has other merits that i'm not considering |
Awesome, just awesome! It looks like you hit just over 1 g on that turn at the end of the road, not sure if it was just a spike or a true reading due to the new suspension :)
Did you have to install any sensors for ChaseCam? Brilliant man! |
I don't own a MaxQ but I've borrowed a setup from a friend a couple of times. I've used both the PDA setup with external video, and the netbook setup.
The PDA setup is a little more solid, and you can view/compare telemetry immediately after a session/run but not the video because it is external. The downside is you have a tiny little screen to look at. Later after you import the video and data into your PC you need to manually synchronize them. The netbook system is very cool, the software records the video (up to 2 cams) at the same time as the telemetry and you can view everything together after a session/run. The problem is that the software and the netbooks are still a little buggy. The netbooks seem to crash on a regular basis and have to be rebuilt, reinstalled. I think you're right and that ChaseCam is the way to go for now. |

LSD action for sure, I could hear it working in the vid. The diff action is so much better than with the OEM LSD...if I had a 370Z, this would be my first mod. Cheers, Robert PS: Thanks for the kind comments. :tiphat: |
Sure thing Robert, and I'm looking forward to getting that diff cooler in so we don't burn this one out ! :)... Hey mind sharing how we setup the car ? camber/caster/toe... thanks
|
Quote:
Front camber: -2.00 Rear camber: -2.50 Front caster: +6.00 Front toe: 0.00 Rear toe: +0.10 More corner weight info later... |
Thanks
Better to be on the safe side, especially in 100+F |
A couple more vids from today
... just a brief drive on highway ... and this one is a left hand skid pad test... you can really hear the dif going to work... turn up your sound!!! pulsing the throttle a bit to see how it responds, not because I drive that way ! :) Finally, here's a graph of the g's over distance http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/u...kidpadtest.gif Not really corner balanced yet, so left turns should be the weak point on the car... we'll see how it improves after more setup... and then the sticky tires will be on by end of june, and I'm hoping for over 1.2Gs left and right... for now, I'm happy to get sustained readings at 1.0G in left hand skid |
Car looks perfect! Its great to hear the clutch works with no problem.
|
Very cool - thanks for the updates!
You've got me looking forward to the clutch/flywheel combo. Maybe next year... |
All, one thing you'll notice about my setup is that we added +1.0 caster over stock (for 6.0 total)... this is based on recommendations from toyo to max out the caster, and also to get a bit more stability on straights and a bit more roll-induced negative camber... still on street tires, but the car feels good to me this way
|
Looks like thing are coming out pretty well. Loving the chasecam and the clutch is sounding like a must have.
|
travis is the clunking noise you hear at 00:39 for the first time and then stays the LSD at work?
|
youtube blocked from my current location, but yes I think so... keep in mind the chasecam mike is connected directly to the chassis and picks up noises from the diff 5x vs what you hear at ear level... it's not anywhere near THAT bad... but the LSD DOES make some noise...
|
Understood, thanks for clarifying. Is it a clunking noise, though? Later in the video there are other sounds that are a little more subtle, and maybe that's what it is and I am not discerning it properly...
|
probably best described as a low db 'chattering' noise... that is continuous
UPDATE: WE THINK MOST OF THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE STILLEN EXHAUST... STARTING TO SAG SINCE INSTALL AND RUB... WILL UPDATE AGAIN ONCE WE VERIFY AND CORRECT |
Mine has done that too :) Its most likely the exhaust hitting the crossmember again.

I installed the exhaust system for Travis on his car. He has the complete Stillen system from cylinder head back. The headers and catalytic converters fit well without any issues, but from cat back...this exhaust was the worst fitting that I have ever had to deal with.
|
Anyone know what the "fix" that Stillen made for the later shipments (we'll call them Rev 2)?
|
I didn't know they fixed them?
