well i've tried going a couple days without showering and also showering 3 times a day. trying to find the optimal number to conserve water and to feel fresh

Only if you perspire a lot or just tend to smell funky will you need more than one per day. For most people, more than once a day only serves to dry out your skin. But there are plenty of gentle soaps and more lotions than you can shake a stick at so take as many as makes you feel clean.

Shower as much as you need. The less you shower the more chance you will have to stink. If you work outdoors I recommend once in the morning and once at night. Just do what fits your schedule. Once a day is recommended by many though.
