So I was initially set on a G37 hard-top convertible 6mt with sports package before I bought my Z. Family has had a few G sedans, loved how they drove. Had a convertible Firebird, loved the top-down experience hated the rest.

Anyway, brother convinced me to take a look at a Z while browsing for a G37. Absolutely loved it but I was set on a hard top convertible. Ran insurance prices... below shows the cost difference per month compared to my current Z:

'09 G37 Convertible +$94!!
'12 370Z Roadster -$40..?

Apparently I wasn't as set on a drop-top as I thought...

So anyway, I fail to see the logic. If the numbers were flipped, I'd get it. But almost $150 difference Per Month on the same insurance policy for an older, GT version of the same car (and within a couple hundred dollars book value)? Seems insane.

And why is the convertible cheaper to insure than the coupe, when it costs thousands more and I'm assuming is a higher risk for totalling/injury in an accident? Anyone else cross shop, or am I the only guy under 75 that still likes convertibles (sans the Miata/S2K crowd)?

I've never understood the insurance racket myself. Best bet, shop around and see who will give you the best rates. I'd suggest a reputable company, not the General or Elephant unless you have 14 DUIs

All of the rates were compared between a few companies. My current provider was the cheapest, but I also have some loyalty discounts. My rates are pretty decent, I was just amazed that a newer convertible was cheaper while a GT hard top was significantly more expensive.

Could be one of those things that G's are stolen more than Z's in your area. Maybe more G's on the road getting wrapped around telephone poles compared to Z's.

yah, rates apparently are based on risk and actual accident history.

thanks to more dumbarses crashing and totalling the honda fit, my rates have gone up about $50 in the last year while my G and Z insurace have fallen considerably.

A few of the things that affect a car's rate are: cost to fix, how often it's stolen, horsepower, accident rate, &c. My guess is that convertibles are more costly to fix and are probably stolen more often.

But the Z convertible is significantly less expensive than the G convertible AND cheaper than a coupe. That's the math I don't get.

Value of the car is only important if it's totaled or stolen. For the majority of their claims, they are looking at cost-to-repair. Since a vert top is fairly fragile, it probably has to be repaired (which means replacement for a lot of vehicles) or adjusted after even a minor accident.

Guyguyguys... the roadster is Cheaper to insure than the coupe. It costs more up front, costs more if totalled, and costs more to repair.

i know y'all's insurance rate concerns are legit and i'm trying' to "brag", butt, if it makes you guys feel any better...i'm in my 60's w/basically a clean driving record (never having had an accident) and i'm paying $203/mo. for my '13 probably due only to a bad credit rating acquired later in my life...

so, when feelin' fleeced or confused by your rates, remember---it could be worse...sigh

Living in LV (or any other major city) may not help, either.

I'm paying about $220/mo for full-coverage on my car (went up a few bucks when I switched from 2009 370Z to 2014 Challenger) and a 3-bdrm house. That's with a $20K wreck 3-4 years ago and a speeding ticket every 2 to 4 years plus I get new shingles every 4-7 years because of hail. But I live in a small (<20K) town in S AR (and my credit rating is pretty good).
