you can take defensive driving course when ever you want, no matter what car...
as long as you have not done one in the past 12 months (from the ticket you just got) and no more than 5 in a 10 year period. If you have then you might have to do the 8 hour class which I can imagine sucks. I would go to court with it. schedule a time, then 1 week before the hearing, call and say your out on business and need to reschedule, and then go... by then the officer usually never shows up and your golden.
