I'm still willing to play.

When in a smallish bar/club/houseparty with good sightlines, if you do decide to go trolling around and making conversation and hitting on the ladies, don't go straight for the hottest chick or two in the joint. Go for every one else. The hotties will notice. And never act like you're with someone else or let one of those other girls monopolize your time (unless you're really hitting it off). Give others who may feel a bit jealous a chance to approach you by disengaging every now and then to wander. If you attempt to ilfiltrate a group of ladies (also know as the dreaded Pack), be sure to make eye contact with all of them and include them all as a unit. Don't alienate any of them, or they'll undermine you when you're not there.

Find a wingman you can trust. Often he (or even she) can break the ice more casually. Or better yet, approach everyone casually with no agendas, as if you're the wingman for someone else, but really there is no one else and you're just being friendly for no real reason. If you go to the same bar often, the bartender can be an ok wingman, as long as you're not a nuisance to them and you tip well.

By that token. Always tip well. It gets you favors and allows you to get orders more easily and efficiently. Never lie to the bartenders. Or your wingman.
