TACAN systems are used in a military application. I work on civilian aircraft, mainly transatlantic commercial airliners such as Boeing 777. Civil aviation uses the VOR/DME system, which is very similar. In fact, TACAN is a type of VOR/DME system used for military aviation.
Interesting - I was told they had Tacans at the comercial fields as well - must be the variant they were thinking of.... never could figure out why you'd want a system that tells everyone where you are located for use with the Military

I'm an air traffic controller and you are correct. Most airports have a co-located Vortac/Tacan. We get a fair number of military practice approaches that use the Tacan. Some of them don't even have VHF radios!
