I'm not a huge fan of Glocks, mainly for their aesthetics, but there is no denying that they are well-designed, rugged handguns that are simple to maintain and shoot, and they are cost-effective. 9mm is the way to go - low recoil, ammo is cheap and available.

There are many, many, many excellent handguns out there, most of the good ones between $700 and $1000. Glocks and M&Ps, at ~$500, are a bargain as defensive firearms.

Please do not try to teach yourself how to shoot your new firearm, and please do not rely only on the instruction course required for your handgun or concealed-carry permit. Get additional training that focuses on how to use a firearm effectively and how to take care of it. THEN go out to the range and shoot it and practice with it. A lot.

As a size reference, M4A1Mustang posted above, what appear to be a Glock 26, Glock 19, Glock 17.

Well we have no concealed weapon law so the gun must stay at home or taken to a range. Thanks for the suggestions. :tiphat:

Don't worry I will not be "teaching myself" I want to get good training for all aspects of shootong, owning, maintaining guns

Too funny and almost predictable. Did you get the obligatory 33 rd. magazine yet?

Back from my range trip. All sorts of issues with the slide not wanting to lock back on the 19 and 17, mainly the 19. I was originally blaming it on the Federal Champion but then I realized as I was driving home that I was holding the pistols a little differently than normal, which may have been interfering with the slide release lever.

Now that I am home and playing with the guns again I am 100% certain it was my stupid thumb that was inadvertently holding the slide lever down.

Bummer that I have to go back to the range on Sunday to confirm my theory. ;)

Both the 19 and 17 shoot very well. I'm glad I got them both!!!

Now to clean...

Oh my Kahr CM9 is doing well. I think it's about ready to be given the green light to carry, but I think I'll give it another few more range trips before I do that just to be safe. For such a small pistol it's nice and accurate.

What can I say... I'm a reluctant Glock fanboy. ;)

While trying to decide if I wanted the 19 or 17 I looked at 1911s. My boss wants one somewhere around $1000 give or take. They had a nice Kimber and Springfield around $850 and some more right around $1000-1250 that I think he'd like.

Unfortunately I really, really like them too. :shakes head:

Holster help time...

I think I'm going to get an MTAC for the 19. I love my MTAC with my G26.

Now for OWB carry I am thinking something like a Blade Tech Nano or Raven Phantom... any suggestions? 19 is going to be easy to wear OWB in the fall/winter with something covering it.

Glock 21SF FTW!!! I love mine a lot. I would like to get my hands on an SIS 1911 tho...

Blackhawk CQC

Ive used it for years and have never had a problem. Of course you get those that go, "oh its prone to accidental discharge!" I used mine for work which meant I've had to draw it numerous times and have never had a problem. Its operator error imo...

m4a1mustang 07-13-2012 11:02 PM

I have one of those for my G26 and hate it!

SgtGoldy 07-13-2012 11:02 PM

Dude, if you wanna take the drive north a lil bit into lake county, there is a really awesome range I go to all the time. I know the owners decent and they have instructional courses and rental guns so you can get a feel for what you like best.

I would try to avoid doing anything firearm related in cook county. BTW, do you have your IL Firearm Owner ID (FOID)?

Raven Phantom is a great series of holsters. I have favored Blade-Tech drop-offset for range holsters and courses, but the Ravens are excellent, especially for OWB carry. They fit the gun well and their belt loops for OWB are superior. The problem with Raven has been their 16-18 week backlog. However they how have a "Quick Ship" option for certain handgun models and those are shipping in 30 days or less. The Glock 17, 19, and 26 are part of that 30-day Quick Ship product line. I didn't want to wait (or pay the $80), so I'm making my own in the little kydex corner of my workshop using Raven belt loops .

Just added a M&P Shield to the collection. I finally got to shoot it this week, love it.
