sboden 11-19-2011 11:32 AM

This had been the cleanest one yet. Finally, for me, no issues from the start.

Nizmo0533 11-19-2011 01:28 PM

Might be bad drivers?

Time to upgrade then, obviously.

sboden 11-19-2011 04:23 PM

Your video drivers and sound drivers may need to be upgraded as MightyBobo pointed out. I did have to get the latest driver for my video card.

So I definitely found my calling in BF3: Driving tanks. I just went 42-9 on Caspian with the Abrams. The few times I was killed were when I was on foot. Good fun in that tank! I managed to take two T-90s out in a 2-on-1 battle. I kept moving and they didn't.

Yeah, learning how to shoot on the run is huge. Also, knowing where to hit and at what angle is good, too.

i've always kept my drivers up to date. but i read something about onboard sound card on gigabyte mobos are bad or something. after putting in a soundcard its fine. no lags or bsods at all. i wish they'd fix that problem though. anyways we should all get together and play sometime :D

m4a1mustang 11-19-2011 11:18 PM

That's interesting. I am running onboard sound and I have a Gigabyte P55-USB3 and it runs fine.

sboden 11-19-2011 11:24 PM

Where are the tank soft spots in this version...it seems like there may be one in one of the BF1942 areas between the turret and the body.

m4a1mustang 11-19-2011 11:27 PM

Side and rear. The rear is really weak. The side is weak if you can get a direct hit. Glancing blows don't do nearly as much damage as direct hits.

m4a1mustang 11-19-2011 11:28 PM

Of course the best thing to do is get all your shots off before they even see you.

sboden 11-19-2011 11:30 PM

Yep..I had luck with that tonight also though not at your level. I couldn't ever get in the server you were in. I did notice they went back to the soft spots of BF1942 except not as extreme as 1 shot 1 kill on the rear.

Definitely sides and rear. You want to get as close to a 90-degree angle on the shot as possible, so when 2 tanks are facing each other head on, turn your tank at a 45 degree angle to the other tank if possible.

Also, for RPG's...you get a damage bonus if you attack from above.

?? The other games were like that? BF2 and BC2 for instance...

m4a1mustang 11-20-2011 08:55 AM

It takes too many hits to get a tank head on. I try not to engage that way, especially if I know they haven't seen me yet. I'll try to get in behind them (:bowrofl: ) and hit them with my cannon (:icon17: ).

And yes, RPGs from the top are killer. don't even bother hitting a tank head on... try the rear or top if you can work the angle.

The only one that was similar to the tank sweet spots in BF3 was the first one BF1942. People complained about tanks ruling in BF1942 and the tankers complained about 1 shot 1 kill from the rear, so the versions after BF Vietnam, BF2 and so forth adjusted those two things. Personally, I think BF3 has been the most balanced so far of all the releases.

BF1942 you had to have skill to be an elite tanker because you had to hit while on the move because it was about where you hit not just about hitting the other tank. The elite tankers could hit from a distance while on the move and or took extra time to get around to the side or back of an enemy before shooting.

Im pretty sure BC2 also took into account more damage if you hit closer to a 90 degree angle, and also if you hit the sides or rear.

Anyway, for everyone curious about the upcoming flashlight nerf...

m4a1mustang 11-21-2011 10:13 AM

Thank goodness. That flashlight is too powerful.

I am going to be sad to lose the effectiveness of the IR scope, though. That thing makes spotting enemy so effing easy. :icon17:

Yes it did but not the level of damage as in BF1942 and BF3. I liked reading the comments of the article. This is the cleanest most balanced version yet out of the box. I agree there are some issues but nothing that is taking the joy of the game away. I could just sit and complain about someone killing me with a weapon I've not leveled to yet or just get myself leveled......

Its been pretty isolated, so far as Ive seen.

delusional 11-21-2011 11:40 PM

yeah there was 4 guys with same clan tag running around aimbotting throughout the whole game :shakes head:

m4a1mustang 11-22-2011 07:04 AM

I've run into a few aimbotters. When I realize what's going on I just leave the server.

So far though it's only been a small % of people.

MightyBobo 11-22-2011 08:09 AM

I've run into aim-botters VERY sparingly. I can only think of a couple times, maybe.

Been doing some more research for a video card solution. It seems like 2gb 6950s in Crossfire are a much better value than 2gb 6970s in Crossfire. I can save roughly $175-200 going with the 6950s.

For background, I have a single 2GB 5870 and I play on three monitors at 5760x1080. So it struggles if I try to run anything higher than medium settings across the board.

Yeah I read those. Would have been nice if they tested the cards in SLI/Crossfire

They tested some cards in SLi. Was hoping to see a comparison of my 460's in SLi to the new stuff, but it looks like it scales well.

I definitely am in need of a new processor though - my i7-920 is getting a bit long in the tooth.

m4a1mustang 11-22-2011 09:36 AM

I have an i5-650 and it does quite well. I just need more graphics power to run 5760x1080 in High-Ultra.

I could run Ultra no problem if I was a normal person running one screen. :/

m4a1mustang 11-22-2011 10:12 AM

Just found the Crossfire tests. 6970/6950 are pretty close.

Aka, buy the 6950 :-p haha.

I DID find it funny how you can throw almost any freaking processor at that game and it made almost no difference at all. Its all in the graphics card...

sboden 11-22-2011 01:18 PM

Seems just about everything has been taken off the processor. Probably the one thing which can be scimped on now. Video ran by video card and sound run by sound card if you don't use the on board sound, and tons of RAM.

m4a1mustang 11-22-2011 01:42 PM

How much potential for gain is there with a dedicated sound card?

sboden 11-22-2011 01:47 PM

I would have to look it up but I would say up to 10 to 15 percent depending on the card and your settings.

**I'm checking but reviews are all about sound quality and I have not found anything on computer performance. It is very possible the once performance gains have disappeared with the current MOBO sets. I may be too old school on this one. I do keep up with video cards though and I still use a sound card instead of the on board.

sboden 11-22-2011 01:48 PM

Thanks for the links.

m4a1mustang 11-22-2011 02:17 PM

I need to stop looking at this stuff or I'll end up buying a new mobo and chip. I am just going to get the two 6950s and be happy.
