As someone who works in the Nuclear industry and is exasperated by the ignorance and misinformation that the media and general public is presenting, thank you for giving some perspective.

Reading the comments section for the Nuclear articles at CNN makes me seriously concerned about the public perception of nuclear safety and the status of power companies efforts to build new reactors.

I guess that's your black Nismo I've seen. I usually drive my old Accord but you may see a red base model with sport brakes there on occasion.

Yeah, that's mine. I've been using it as a DD for about 8 months, but hopefully i'll be getting a used SUV soon for increased practicality. Then the Z will be a fair weather driver/garage queen.

I pass through RP fairly regularly during outage times. We may have met.

This statement particularly concerns me. Radiation can not spread out and contaminate things. Even wikipedia will give you enough info to understand this a little better.

I think the media and public use radiation and radioactive (radiation emitting) particles interchangeably.

Or maybe they actually think that once something is exposed to radiation it become radioactive.

Im more concerned by this quote:

This had me worried for a bit, because I'm actually coming to the States on Friday

We have 0 chance of any coming to Australia... from what I've been reading so far it aint anything to worry about...

I just don't like radioactive iodine being compared to an x-ray.. from my understanding, if you inhale or swallow radioactive particles they keep releasing radiation in your body and their half lives are prolonged slightly... an x-ray sends a burst of radiation your way but is ceased once it is over... so radioactive particles don't equal normal background radiation... Still I'm guessing the media has gone nuts over the slight levels in the US... it was on the news here for a while too... seems to have died down over the last week for some reason though.

The intake of radioactive particles does cause continued release of your radiation in your body. But the half life of these particles is much shorter because you have the combined effects of it's radiological half life and it's biological half life. You will sneeze, pee, poop, sweat, or whatever else a lot of it out depending on the isotope.

And the strength of these particles is so weak that the dose they give you is next to nothing.
