I don't think you'll see an iPhone killer simply because of how the cellphone market is set up in America. The total cost of switching networks, which is exactly what it means to switch from an iPhone to one of these high end Android phones, is simply ridiculous.

You can make a better phone than the iPhone, and many have in fact done that. But now you have to overcome its apps as well, because its users have money invested in those on top of the phone.

Volcom370Z 05-27-2010 11:18 PM

Valid point... but look at all the people dropping their carriers to go to ATT for the iPhone to begin with...

The EVO 4G is nice, but I'll take an HTC Incredible over it any day. Furthermore, theres no way WiMax (Sprints 4G) is going to survive against AT&T's and Verizon's LTE 4G...

My opinion? Android is quickly going to become a formidable force for Apple to contend with.

Maybe, Verizon just make a comment yesterday that for LTE data they are not going to have any unlimited plans, only tiered. :shakes head:
I will say though that LTE is going to blow WiMax out of the water, and you can tell Sprint is trying to jump in early to try to pull people in and get them under contract before the others can upgrade their networks.

On the note of an iPhone killer, from Android 2.0 any "decent" phone with Android is better, until Apple decides to release OS 4.0. At that point Android will already be beyond 2.2 (Froyo) and pushing more features than Apple can throw apps at.

For some reason I'm optimistic that Sprint will produce a good product this time with WiMax. I like seeing companies that once sucked *** make a 180 and actually thrive. They say that ATT has the worst network out right now, so I think they have quite a way to go and with the info you posted about Verizon, I think Sprint would stand a fighting chance...

I agree to, as it pains me to say it Apple was dead in the water and got a second chance and look at them now (more evil than Microsoft & Google :p).
I am a bit glad to be on Verizon right now, was on AT&T for years, but I will say I never had issues in Houston (or Austin, Dallas, basically anywhere in Texas) on AT&T.

Its weird though... Look up the locations where WiMax already exists. There are some random *** places in Texas that have it. Maybe there something special about Texas... aside from everything being bigger

I dont think the up/down speeds of WiMax are nearly as good as LTE's. Furthermore, Verizon and AT&T will be using the same infrastructure practically, and they are BEHEMOTHS compared to Sprint. Even Sprint itself has hinted they may go to LTE...

With AT&T's small bandwidth and the increasing amount of things trying to use that bandwidth, any smart phone, iphone and now the ipad, ATT is falling way behind. The iphone contract is coming up soon and there have been a lot of speculation that it will no longer just be on that network but also verizon as well. Verizon has a better overall network while att has a bigger(in size) one and sprint with the fastest, for now. hopefully sprint can become a giant because i hate att customer service, except for uverse....their customer service is the best i have ever had to deal with.

I need people to understand this, AT&T has a five year contract, we are about to end year 3 so your best hope is 2012 or 2013.
AT&T skipped 3G other than major cities and focused on setting up LTE a long time ago, it will be simple for them to make the change.

cmancha003 05-29-2010 10:05 AM

My bad...just speculation I have heard. :-)

Im happy the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T. The longer it stays there, the longer Android will have to grow a strong support base thanks to it being the "only option" on other carriers.

The sad truth is apparent: people are willing to buy an iPhone merely because of its name, and nothing else. They could know NOTHING about other phones/OS's. I love running into someone running Android now, because almost all of them love their phones and were genuinely surprised how good they were, seeing as it was the "best they had since the iPhone wasn't a choice". Nothing pleases me more than seeing someone converted due to simply opening their eyes a bit.

I completely agree! The iPhone was cool three years ago when there was nothing to compete with it, but no longer. People are buying into an old technology, and seem happy to pay out the *** and be on a crappy network to do so. Imagine if Sprint or Verizon had the iPhone from the start? I think ATT would die.

All these people are "love" apple products because they are just SO great. and iPad? Really? A big *** iPhone with a bigger processor? for $800? I'm all set. You can buy a laptop for that with Windows 7 on it (which I think is a HUGE steop in the right direction for MS) or even a netbook. I don't know how apple staying in business

Perceived exclusivity.

Apple products are nothing more than a status symbol to many - they barely even know how to use them to their full potential.
