Default Ms. Right? Or Ms. Right now? When to "settle"?

So my coworkers and I got into a conversation the other day about finding one's "soul mate". Some people believe that there is a "Ms. Right" or "Mr. Right" (for the ladies) out there for everyone. Others believe that that search is futile and will only lead to frustration.

What's your take on it? Do you think as long as you and your partner are happy, then you don't need to be "perfect" for each other?

Would you rather live a life alone, than "settle" for someone perhaps overweight or immature? Or would you rather settle for someone not so right for you, just to ensure you have a "teammate" in life, i.e. someone to help raise kids and complete a household? Is there a certain age or situation in which you think one goes from one choice to the other?

EDIT:

Here is the article that a coworker found that started the conversation. It's from a woman's perspective about why it's okay to settle.
