yea just saying with no need for the socket itself it saves a lot of space to maneuver in there.

JARblue 05-08-2019 12:08 PM

I hate those K&N filters lol ... Most of the time the nut rounds off for me. But that's cause some other idiot put the oil filter on and tightened it as though it was necessary to prevent Godzilla from being able to remove it. If I installed the filter, I never any issues removing it because I don't tighten them down like that.

Also, just in case I did tighten it down a tad much, I have a nice metal oil filter socket that fits on the end of the filter and works great (except on K&N filters because of that stupid nut).

i have a tool for it. little plastic handle with a rubber piece you wrap around the filter, run through the handle, and it tightens on itself. works for the Z with the tight space. that tool you showed probably wouldnt work.

I dig it, I used to run the longer 1010A on the therm plate; there's MAYBE 2mm of clearance after you get it off the threads. If I didnt live in #chiberia I'd ditch the stock sandwich.

My oil filter wrench has no issues fitting it on the Z even with oil cooler thermostatic plate and larger oil filter. I can't get a socket wrench on the end, but a large ratcheting wrench or crescent wrench easily gets to it.

If my oil filter wrench doesn't do the job, I just do what FP does... stab it with a screwdriver and twist lol

That is, in fact, the tool I use to take the filter off. You just grip it like it owes you money and off she goes.

Your Z is pre-factory oil cooler, yes?

I know which one your talking about, rubber strap thing. Ive used that, the little cup you put on a ratchet wrench, the chain strap one, they all slip. The plier type one that I have has offset jaws so that you can get at the filter from different angles. I gave away all my other oil filter tools away after that.

yea spring and fall you get the nights where like last night 65 out but highway drive home from a concert it was struggling to get about 160/165 degrees. soooo sometimes a 34 row isnt needed....give it 3 weeks it'll be 90 here and be totally worth it

Not for the oil filter, but I've found the Craftsman Max Axess low profile sockets to work pretty well in a number of limited clearance scenarios. The socket secures inside the ratchet head and only projects a little bit instead of the whole socket projecting off the ratchet head

Yes but I've used the tool on other Z's as well, including 2012+ models with the stock cooler. However, I have not used it on a Z that kept the factory cooler in conjunction with an aftermarket cooler.

Crushing the filter with a pair of channel locks is also a good feeling :icon17:

I feel you, maybe time for a temporary blockoff plate aka duct tape.

From what I've deduced, when the sensor itself reads 160 the oil temp in the channels is 180, so it's not the end of the world.

Gotcha. Having previously run a large filter on a mocal therm plate on top of the stock cooler, I can tell you the rubber strap is actually too thick to get between the filter and the body lol.

Murder it with pliers. It's the only way to be sure.

dude this one has a 3/8" drive ratchet slot in it WTF lol

on the Z i know i have ZERO room for this but cant remember if the GTR had a gap to get one in there. would make life so much easier.

Couldn’t you just use a crescent wrench on the outside of the nut. You wouldnt necessarily need to fit a 3/8 drive ratchet in there. You might **** the filter up but it’s going on the trash anyway, so who cares.

That's how the thing always rounds off for me. They have so much formed plastic around the base of the nut where it attaches to the oil filter body that it doesn't provide a flat surface around the nut so you can't seat the wrench on the nut very well.

After that happens, I usually just go at the filter body with channel locks.

Jar, that Triggzz guy is selling the diff cover now. :icon14:

jwick 05-08-2019 12:45 PM

I never have an issue getting the oil filter off. I run a thermostat sandwich plate and the large passport oil filter. Of course I’m the only one that has ever put an oil filter on that car and I’m very careful with how tight I make it. I also use the purolator filter which has a nice rough powder coat texture to grip.

Ding ding ding ding ding!

I've never had an issue on my Z. Only on other Z's when I wasn't the last person to do the oil change.

That guy :shakes head:

I've actually decided I'm not at all interested in Z1 parts anymore. Plus I don't need the high capacity cover anyway - the diff I'm getting doesn't heat up like the clutch type diffs do. I'm planning to grab a Nismo finned diff cover from Joe at ZSpeed - he's waiting on a supply of them.

Lol everything south of I-80 and west of Aurora wants out. Cook and Lake counties would end up being the People's Democratic Republic of Chiraq.
