Am so tempted to wetland the car and get rid of that orange peel, but I've heard so many times how thin the paint and clear is on these things. A body an I know said skip couple steps and go straight to 2000 grit but am concerned I won't get it flat enough and might actually make it look worse instead of better.

Going to give this one some thought before jumping in

Grab a good paint thickness gauge. I personally wouldnt do much wetsanding on OEM paint.

Paint thickness gauge?

Never heard of that, how does it tell the thickness?

cigarclifford 07-10-2016 09:19 PM

:icon17: while all the drunk's were drinking at the happy hour here ;)

I ate 2 dozen oyster's on the half shell :yum:

1 dozen boiled jumbo shrimp's :yum:

4 small but tasty lobster roll's :yum:

3 big bowls of guacamole :yum:

I sipped away on my tall cold glass of milk

Lobster rolls sound awesome

Like already mentioned it's a paint thickness gauge. I've owned one for many years and measure every paint job I work on. The Z is 4.5-5 mills thick. This is an average thickness, and I also find, for my car, it's an average hardness.

Found this.

Thanks

I looked on Amazon and seems like they vary from $118 to $5465 :icon14:

That reference of the thickness is very helpful. I'm actually surprised it is even that. The clear is softer than hell no doubt about it. If I do wetsand and polish should look at a diamond coat overtop.

Nissan painted my Nismo ultra thin as well

No paint will be left after the first wet sanding :icon17:

Too bad it's not as easy as spraying a bunch of coats of clear on and go to town on it lol

Much orange peel on the quarter panels. Looks even worse when I use a detail spray or wax on it. Drives me nuts :driving::icon14:

Then again it would only cost me about $600 materials and a weekend to reshoot the entire car.

Hmm..

Swapping performance parts on a brand new car is one thing but painting it with 2500 miles on the clock just because or some factory orange peel seems a little over the top :rofl2:

I can shoot but don't have a booth. Could rent one though.

Not like I have time for that right now. Maybe I'll revisit that idea once it's parked for winter.

A really dark graphite instead of MB might be nice :)

I like that the factory wheels are readily available online. Think going to get some Blizzaks before winter.
