never really understood why there are so many knobs and you see people using like maybe 3-4 -_-

Because all the tweaks were done hrs in advance during stage rehersal

Minus equalizing everything with those knobs, the general usage of it is fairly straightforward.

The lowest row is generally labeled with what sound equipment is tied to it.

guitar|drums|drums 2| FOH| Bass

Every knob above those individual equipment rows controlls the equalizer basically for that specific feed. So you can adjust mics, tunes, etc on the fly.

The sliders are generally used for lazy stuff like volume.

It's obviously more complicated than that, but that's the basics. Oh, and you can place asteroid on them.

I was a lighting coordinator, so i actually did stuff during the shows. But on the off chance, we usually just hung around back stage and messed with each other over headsets.

Think super Troopers, but with stagehands. Asking the nubs for metric crescent wrenches, and sending the really fat guys up 2 story ladders to lift a few hundred pounds of load bearing weights onto the traveling lines for curtains.

Or seeing how much gaff tape was needed to tape the midget to the wall.

I loved running audio for clueless singers. They'd signal for more gain or whatever into the speakers or mic even though we did rehersals beforehand. I'd have audio set up perfectly. So i'd just touch a random knob and pretend to twist it. 90% of the time, the singer would signal back with a thumbs up like I actually did something....

Went to a block party a few weeks back in a friends neighborhood. It was a 'first annual' and very small. But they had the road closed off, a stage set up for the band, the whole nine yards. Was just some local band, some covers some original tunes. They were actually half decent. Anyways they had this sound guy there who apparently does some pretty big stadium concerts and it was funny as hell seeing him run around with sound checks and getting everything set up just right. Even during the show he'd go side to side with some sort of meter testing and tweaking and whatever else. Glad to see him taking his job so seriously, even if he was only getting maybe $100 for this small town block party gig with maybe 30 people :p
