Anyone else pick up the new Verizon DROID?

I did yesterday - love it so far, but as with all things electronic, I'll give it a little while before I find out if I TRULY love it or not lol. I came from a BB Curve, so I'll probably miss how much you could do in a tiny package, but at the same time, Android is the new behemoth so...

I picked one up yesterday. I replaced a old Motorola Q. I still have a BB Curve for work, so I'll be doing some side by side comparisons. After a day, I'm impressed. I think impressed will turn to love the day someone hacks multitouch into it.

Its not really HACKED - its just getting the stuff to actually work with it. At least we know the screen SUPPORTS it, right? haha

I'm waiting for the first iPhone converted to Droid user to review it. For now, no one can pry my iPhone away from me.

The iPhone-to-Android Switch: 10 Things You Need to Know - iPhone - Gizmodo

Here's one take on it.

I've never been "blessed" with an Iphone. For me, call reliability and coverage were more important that whizbang,100,000 apps interface. (Don't get me wrong, Apple has the best interface on the planet, but Android 2.0 is in second, closing in...) This phone being on Verizon is one of its biggest assets.

I am in complete agreement there. Apps mean not much at all to me. Reliability does.

Me too. Nobody cares about apps until they start downloading and using them. And I know many people have problems with AT&T's network, but I'm on 3G and have not had a dropped call.

I will say that I'm thrilled that the iPhone has some real competition. This will make the next version of the iPhone even better, and in the end this smartphone race benefits all of us.

I've been planning on getting the BB Tour for months now to replace my LG Dare when my contracts ends this Monday. Though I am heavily considering the Droid now. :O

I'm tempted. I have an Iphone 3gs...but I'm a degenerate for cell phones. Maybe its time to use the iphone as an ipod touch :)

I told my other board I'd post up my thoughts on it as it goes, since I know how people hate buying new technology without a REAL person reviewing it a bit.

So, some initial impressions after playing around a bit more.

If you're using the touchscreen keyboard and you're in vertical mode, you'll hate life - my fingers can hit 3 letters at the same time. That mode sucks to type in. Horizontal mode is a different story - its very easy to type in that mode. Nice, big letters/numbers. And of course, using the slide out keyboard is the best, and its easy to use/comfortable IMHO.

Wireless works fine now that I fixed my router - forgot I made some changes to it that made it unable to connect properly, so now surfing the web at home in my 3G dead zone is a breeze.

Reception doesn't seem quite as good as my BB Curve was, oddly, but then again my Curve seemed exceptional. The only place I have problems is at my house specifically, and its literally in the only valley on base, surrounded by huge trees. Not exactly fair to simply say the reception sucks I suppose.

The UI is very easy to figure out. Its simple - maybe a little too simple for some who want something REALLY flashy like the iPhones, but I find it quite enjoyable. Touchscreen is quick and responsive. Maybe even a little too sensitive - if you BARELY touch the screen it may register a click, sometimes. I can't compare to the iPhone, never used one. Furthermore, there may be a sensitivity adjustment that I haven't found yet.

The speakerphone quality is second to none, so far that Ive found - Ive never had a phone where talking to, and understanding others was so good!

The Google voice search feature is ******* amazing. I tried "Gianni's Pizza", and it got it completely right the first time, perfect spelling. Mapped out where Gianni's pizza is off base with Google search, phone numbers and all.

As I said on the other thread.

After messing around with the droid and the iphone I am still saying iphone is the winner. Much smoother and easier to find apps for it. Also the fact that the droid HAS to have interchangeable batteries because of its crappy battery life. I think that the iphone is still on top. IMO verizon might have the best service and that is what I have but apple still have the best phone. I do not think this is a iphone killer.,

But I still might get this phone when march comes and it is time for an upgrade.

Nobody thinks its an iPhone KILLER really - but its damn good competition.

IMHO, a removable battery is a bonus, not a crutch - what happens when the battery on the iPhone goes lame? You need to send that sucker off just to get it fixed. Poo on that lol.

My iphone has the biggest crutch of them all....AT&T.

POS network. Honestly, they kill the iphone experience. If Apple and Verizon worked out some deal for the iphone...sales would explode.

Yup, which is why AT&T keeps paying Apple more and more to stay exclusive with them...

theDreamer 11-09-2009 10:08 AM

Well the iPhone deal was for three years, then after the first year it did very well so AT&T asked to up it to five years. We are half way through the third year so only a few more to go before the iPhone is free in the US to do what it wants.

Though the question will be, will Apple make a CDMA version?
