Anyone else pick up the new Verizon DROID?
I did yesterday - love it so far, but as with all things electronic, I'll give it a little while before I find out if I TRULY love it or not lol. I came from a BB Curve, so I'll probably miss how much you could do in a tiny package, but at the same time, Android is the new behemoth so...
|
I picked one up yesterday. I replaced a old Motorola Q. I still have a BB Curve for work, so I'll be doing some side by side comparisons. After a day, I'm impressed. I think impressed will turn to love the day someone hacks multitouch into it.

I'm waiting for the first iPhone converted to Droid user to review it. For now, no one can pry my iPhone away from me.

Here's one take on it. I've never been "blessed" with an Iphone. For me, call reliability and coverage were more important that whizbang,100,000 apps interface. (Don't get me wrong, Apple has the best interface on the planet, but Android 2.0 is in second, closing in...) This phone being on Verizon is one of its biggest assets. |

I am in complete agreement there. Apps mean not much at all to me. Reliability does. |

I will say that I'm thrilled that the iPhone has some real competition. This will make the next version of the iPhone even better, and in the end this smartphone race benefits all of us. |
I've been planning on getting the BB Tour for months now to replace my LG Dare when my contracts ends this Monday. Though I am heavily considering the Droid now. :O
|
I'm tempted. I have an Iphone 3gs...but I'm a degenerate for cell phones. Maybe its time to use the iphone as an ipod touch :)
|
I told my other board I'd post up my thoughts on it as it goes, since I know how people hate buying new technology without a REAL person reviewing it a bit.
So, some initial impressions after playing around a bit more. If you're using the touchscreen keyboard and you're in vertical mode, you'll hate life - my fingers can hit 3 letters at the same time. That mode sucks to type in. Horizontal mode is a different story - its very easy to type in that mode. Nice, big letters/numbers. And of course, using the slide out keyboard is the best, and its easy to use/comfortable IMHO. Wireless works fine now that I fixed my router - forgot I made some changes to it that made it unable to connect properly, so now surfing the web at home in my 3G dead zone is a breeze. Reception doesn't seem quite as good as my BB Curve was, oddly, but then again my Curve seemed exceptional. The only place I have problems is at my house specifically, and its literally in the only valley on base, surrounded by huge trees. Not exactly fair to simply say the reception sucks I suppose. The UI is very easy to figure out. Its simple - maybe a little too simple for some who want something REALLY flashy like the iPhones, but I find it quite enjoyable. Touchscreen is quick and responsive. Maybe even a little too sensitive - if you BARELY touch the screen it may register a click, sometimes. I can't compare to the iPhone, never used one. Furthermore, there may be a sensitivity adjustment that I haven't found yet. The speakerphone quality is second to none, so far that Ive found - Ive never had a phone where talking to, and understanding others was so good! The Google voice search feature is ******* amazing. I tried "Gianni's Pizza", and it got it completely right the first time, perfect spelling. Mapped out where Gianni's pizza is off base with Google search, phone numbers and all. |
As I said on the other thread.
After messing around with the droid and the iphone I am still saying iphone is the winner. Much smoother and easier to find apps for it. Also the fact that the droid HAS to have interchangeable batteries because of its crappy battery life. I think that the iphone is still on top. IMO verizon might have the best service and that is what I have but apple still have the best phone. I do not think this is a iphone killer., But I still might get this phone when march comes and it is time for an upgrade. |

IMHO, a removable battery is a bonus, not a crutch - what happens when the battery on the iPhone goes lame? You need to send that sucker off just to get it fixed. Poo on that lol. |
My iphone has the biggest crutch of them all....AT&T.
POS network. Honestly, they kill the iphone experience. If Apple and Verizon worked out some deal for the iphone...sales would explode. |

Well the iPhone deal was for three years, then after the first year it did very well so AT&T asked to up it to five years. We are half way through the third year so only a few more to go before the iPhone is free in the US to do what it wants.
Though the question will be, will Apple make a CDMA version? |
why are you guys tripping about apps? LOL... trust me ... android will have enough apps soon... But hardware and interface wise... your iphone is smoother only cus you are used to it... IMO the droid is FAR better than any iPhone i have used... not to mention you have a frekin keyboard lol
|
Wow, three days later and we have lots of Droid fanboyz!
|
Well I'm about to pull the trigger on one later today. Like mentioned before, I was planning on the BB Tour but this made me change my decision within a matter of minutes.
|
not so much droid fanboy as much as iPhone HATER... fu(K apple ... and FU(K AT&T... they are LAME companies that are out to make a buck and also happen to not care about service - its all about image... and what does image get you at the end of the day? Not a dam thing

Well he does have a point with the iPhones. Most iPhone users I come across(especially online) loves to rub it in my face of how amazing their phone is though I am fine with my current phone. At the end of the day, it's just a phone.

That is one of the rumors that next year when the contract with cingular is up they might offer it to verizon. But if they do they better not ask to change apples stuff to verizons store for music and all. That is one of the reasons they got screwed out of it last time. |
Quote:
HAHAHAH ******* tards EDIT: comes to mind blah blah blah in my price range lol... |
and for what its worth - i let all my coworkers (we all work for a HUGE H/W S/W company - so all of em are pretty into early adoption of techy stuff...) and they were drolling over how much better it was when compared to their iPhones. Heck... a guy i work with went over to Verizon and signed up for one at lunch - says he is going to give his iPhone to his wife LOL...
|
I just got mine as promised and since I have this pet peeve of charging the phone to full before operating it for the first time, my reviews will have to wait. :D

Whoa, the fanboy force runs strong in this one! No need to get all butt hurt about a damn cell phone! If you have something else to say, hit me with a PM. |

Hell NO 3GS
HEll no i phone 3gs all the way
|
molamann - get the Barcode Scanner from the marketplace :). Its badass when shopping around.
Sorry, was busy installing my oil cooler today. Didnt get to play with it much. What I LOVED is the security feature for locking it. No numbers - it puts 9 dots on the screen and you can simply connect them in a certain order - that is the password. |
I played around with it for a while and I never had a smartphone before so all these features are quite overwhelming. The resolution of the screen is also amazing too. :D
Oh and what's some download worthy apps? So far have I have the shopsaavy, WiFi On/Off, and Pandora. |

Also, my friend just switched over from an iphone to the droid after playing around mine for about half an hour. She's had enough bs with at&t and it seems like the Droid already has the same or similar apps she previously enjoyed on her iphone anyways. |
Oh and the browsing experience and the speed of the processor is amazing. I got like 5 apps open and the phone isn't choking at all.

You have another thing coming at ya if you think people who get Z's get them for the image of a Z lol... its a sports car and I purchased one to DRIVE... If I cared about image... I would be in a lexus or benz... The point I was making had NOTHING to do w/ a cellphone so your comment is pretty irrelevant. Anyhow back on topic: One of the only reason I feel android is much better than apple is simply due to the freedom given to application developers and users alike. I can choose to make my own pinch to zoom app and use it myself or load it up on the store. I could write my own teather app and get internet on my laptop. The list is endless and I dont need apple to say ... oh we dont need this app on our store. With apple - you are spoon-fed and have no choice but to go w/ whats available. With android - you make whats available so instead of bitching and moaning to apple - you can implement it yourself. I see the android phones atleast for the next year or so be predominantly used by folks who have some programing know-how. Eventually when the app market is saturated - I would imaging other adopters would join in giving apple a run for their money. |
I dont like to be "that guy", but I wont lie - if a phone came along that had almost all, more, or better features than the iPhone for Verizon with a competent OS and lots of potential, I was going to buy it. I absolutely CANNOT stand Apples business practices.
|
Wow really? I love there products and how they are bashing windows. I also enjoy that apple makes stuff that works. LOL
|
Quote:
And "stuff that works" versus "stuff that is truly functional, powerful, and customizable" are very different things. Not to mention you're using the same hardware in an Apple as a PC now...except you're paying double for the luxury of running MacOS... |
Well don't want to hijack this thread but they are now customer satisfactions #1 computer and there products can be used for many of the same things that you do with a computer. Also the fact that they are not including the program to allow customers to use mac and windows on the same computer is pretty cool. I have a 5 year old mac that still kicking and a 6 year old ipod. There iphones are great and well made, that one product changed the entire industry and how we use and look at cell phones. Yes we use to have the black berry's and all but nothing works as well as the iphone. The Droid is great I will say that but it's apps are limited and how they want you do download music is sort of a joke.
|
so whats a good price to pay for this bad boy?
i guess my only gripes is it doesnt have the verizon nav pack and it only works in the states...i.e. not tri/quad band :shakes head: is there gps capability with it? |
Quote:
It all boils down to the dumb-ing down of society, IMHO. Ive been using PC's for far too long, and when I jump on a Mac, I feel like I need to go full retard. That's Apples goal: how can we make this so simple and intuitive that ANYONE can use it. Great...but I'm not "anyone", not to toot my own horn. I WANT ****-tons of features and to be able to hack the crap out of it. I don't want my hands tied because Apple says so. The way you're viewing it seems rather simplistic to be honest - "nothing works as well as the iPhone" - how so? Blackberries are amazing pieces of machinery in a very tiny package. The reason the iPhone is so popular has a LOT more to do with the simply fact that to many, its a status symbol. But for doing actual work and productivity things, the Blackberry will probably rape face. My Curve 8330 was awesome, and seeing as I don't need all the cheese-ball apps that the iPhone has, what did I care? So, ask yourself this - if you took away all the silly apps from the iPhone and the Blackberry, what are you left with? One is a toy, and one is a tool. BTW, your hardware surviving that long means nothing to me lol - my sister is using a laptop of mine that is almost 7 years old now, and its still amazing. Yeah, its not the BEST spec-wise of course, but it still runs, and its plenty fast for her. I will give you this however - you are very correct, that the iPhone is making companies look again, at how we look at cell phones. Everything is so mobile now, its scary. |
