Black wire (ground), does it need that o-ring adapter to attach to a bolt? Or can I just twist the end and hope it holds behind a random bolt somewhere if i tighten the bolt down?

no need for the ring terminal. you can just wrap the bare wire around a bolt and screw it down. it just needs to make full contact to a good ground.

if you're unsure if the bolt is a clean ground or not, u can use your voltmeter and touch one prong to a known ground (like a bolt for your clutch pedal assembly or any big metal bracket under the dash) and touch the other prong to your candidate bolt. if the volt drops to "0 volts" you got a clean ground.

never owned or used a voltometer. Hopefully I can just find a bolt under the dash near the fuse box that just holds 2 parts of plastic together or something.

humm... you want to find a bolt that holds 2 parts of metal together. most of the larger brackets behind the dash is grounded though, but some are cleaner ground than others. clean ground will show "0 volts".. not so clean will fluctuate between 0 to like 2V.

amazon sells a super cheap voltmeter which works fine. you might want to get one for this and future use. pretty handy stuff to have.

Alright, ordered it. What's the dial for? Specific volts obviously, but which and why?

yah, it's a multi-meter so you can use it as a volt meter, ohm meter, etc.

u would turn the dial to exactly where that picture shows V "20"
that means its in the voltmeter mode, reading 0 to 20V.

- Or you can chose the o))) icon which I believe is the continuity test mode where it makes a beep sound when it detects continuity.

other example you can use V "2" for 0-2V range to check your AA battery charge wat not.

or if you want to figure out your resistor value, chose the ohm mode, etc.
